Patriot League Announces PenFed Credit Union 2023-24 Men’s Basketball Major Awards and All-League Teams (3.4.24)
Colgate’s Smith and Langel, Holy Cross’s Kenney and Army West Point’s Scovens earn major awards
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Colgate sophomore guard Braeden Smith and Holy Cross junior forward Caleb Kenney were selected the 2023-24 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, in addition to earning All-Patriot League honors when the League office announced postseason honors, presented by PenFed Credit Union, on Monday.
Smith is the fifth sophomore to earn Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player of the Year honors, joining Colgate’s Adonal Foyle (1995-96), Holy Cross’s Tim Szatko (2000-01), Bucknell’s Mike Muscala (2010-11) and Lehigh’s Tim Kempton (2014-15). He led the League and finished among the NCAA DI top 25 in assists (5.8 apg) while leading the regular-season champion Raiders in scoring (12.2 ppg).
Kenney is the fourth different Crusader to receive Patriot League Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year. In League play, the junior forward led the Patriot League with 2.8 blocked shots per game and ranked second with 7.4 rebounds per game.
Army West Point freshman forward Josh Scovens collected Patriot League Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year honors, becoming the fifth Black Knight to garner the accolade. Scovens, a five-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, led all League freshmen in scoring (11.9 ppg) and rebounding (5.2 rpg).
Colgate men’s basketball head coach Matt Langel collected Patriot League Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year for the fifth time, a League record. Langel guided the Raiders to their fifth regular-season title in six seasons, becoming the first team since the Patriot League expanded to 10 teams in 2013-14 to go 9-0 on the road in League play.
The Patriot League major awards and All-League teams are presented by PenFed Credit Union. They were voted on by Patriot League men’s basketball head coaches, who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.

*Smith leads the Patriot League in assists (5.8 apg), ranking 24th in NCAA DI, to guide a Colgate offense that ranked second in the League with 71.2 points per game and first with a 46.6 team field-goal percentage.
*The sophomore guard led the Raiders and ranked eighth in the League with 12.2 points per game, in addition to averaging 5.3 rebounds per game.
*His 1.9 steals per game ranks second in the Patriot League for a Raiders’ defense that has held opponents to a League-low 63.4 points per game.

*The junior forward blocked a Patriot League single-game season-high seven shots in Holy Cross’s 65-63 win against Boston University on Jan. 29.
*In League play, Kenney’s 7.4 rebounds per game ranked second among League leaders, while his three double-doubles tied for third in the League.

*Scovens led all Patriot League freshmen in scoring (11.9 ppg) and rebounding (5.9), posting four 20-point performances, the eighth-most in the League.
*The freshman forward earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors five times, including three consecutive weeks.
*He earned League Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 5 after averaging 20.5 points and shooting 61.5 percent from the floor in games against Colgate and Lafayette.

*Langel earned a Patriot League record fifth coach of the year honor after guiding Colgate to its fifth regular-season title in six seasons with a 22-9 overall record, going 16-2 in League games.
*In League play, the Raiders possessed the Patriot League’s best scoring offense (72.7), scoring defense (60.6) and scoring margin (+12.1). Their .483 team field-goal percentage and .386 team 3-point field-goal percentage lead the League.
*Langel and the Raiders became the first team since the Patriot League expanded to 10 teams before the 2013-14 season to go 9-0 on the road in League play.
2023-24 All-Patriot League Teams
Colgate and Lafayette tied for a League-high three student-athletes on the three All-Patriot League squads. American, Bucknell, Holy Cross and Lehigh each had two representatives, while Boston University, Loyola Maryland and Navy had one All-League selection apiece.
Four of the 17 student-athletes voted onto the three All-League teams are multi-year honorees. Colgate fifth-year forward Keegan Records (11.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg) is a three-time All-League honoree and two-time first-teamer. Records was joined on the first team by American senior forward Matt Rogers (16.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Lehigh junior guard Tyler Whitney-Sidney (15.1 ppg, 2.1 apg). Rogers and Whitney-Sidney were second and third-team All-League honorees last season, respectively. Colgate fifth-year forward Ryan Moffatt (10.8 ppg) earned second-team honors after making the third team last season.
Records, Rogers, Smith and Whitney-Sidney were joined on the All-Patriot League First Team by Bucknell senior guard Jack Forrest (16.0). Smith and Forrest are both first-time All-League honorees.
Moffatt and Kenney highlighted a six-member second team. American junior guard Elijah Stephens (12.3 ppg, 5.0 apg), Boston University senior Miles Brewster (10.9 ppg, 3.2 apg), Loyola Maryland sophomore guard Deon Perry (17.2 ppg) and Navy sophomore guard Austin Benigni (16.6, 3.8 apg) round out the second team. Perry and Benigni finished first and second in the League in scoring.
The third team consists of six first-time All-League selections, including three representatives from Lafayette. Senior forward Kyle Jenkins (9.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg), junior guard Devin Hines (9.8 ppg) and junior center Justin Vander Baan (9.3 ppg, 5.29 rpg, 2.2 bpg) make up the Leopards’ trio. Bucknell sophomore center Noah Williamson (11.7 ppg, 6.2 rpg), Holy Cross senior guard/forward Joe Octave (14.0 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Lehigh senior forward Dominic Parolin (11.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg) round out the third team.
Due to ties in the voting, there were six student-athletes selected to the second and third teams.
Kenney, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, highlights a League’s All-Defensive Team, which includes fellow All-League selections Stephens, Brewster, Records and Vander Baan. Kenney and Vander Baan rank among the NCAA DI top 25 in blocked shots. Navy sophomore Donovan Draper, who led the League in rebounding (8.9 rpg) and steals (2.0 spg), also earned a spot on the defensive team in his first year with the Midshipmen.
Scovens leads an impactful five-player Patriot League All-Rookie Team. Army West Point teammate and freshman guard Ryan Curry (10.1 ppg, 3.0 apg), American forward Matt Mayock (.423 3FG%), Boston University guard Kyrone Alexander (9.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and Lafayette freshman guard Mark Butler (7.3 ppg, 3.7 apg) were voted onto the rookie squad by League head coaches.
