I figured it’s time to give our guys their own threads. Here’s what to know about Jalen so far.
Panthers really like him. Reading “Carolina insider” material it’s expected he competes for the 53 man roster from day 1. Panther’s contract suggests as much as they guaranteed him a minimum 225k salary (plus 25k signing bonus) which is the 2024 17 week practice squad rate. Should he make the active roster all 17 weeks, his base salary will be 795k.
What to know about the Panthers 2-deep at WR and his chances:
Carolina traded for Diantae Johnson from the Steelers this offseason to be WR1 in 2024. Adam Thielen turns 34 this summer and has 2 seasons left on his contract. Their first round pick last week - Xavier Leggette from South Carolina will likely round out WR 1-3.
After that, it gets very interesting. Jonathan Mingo was drafted in the 2nd round by the Panthers out of Ole Miss in 2023 and while he was the 3rd leading WR on the roster as a rookie last season (43 catches for 418 yards), he caught 0 TDs and consensus seems to be he had a very inconsistent first year. None the less, he looks like WR 4.
WRs 5/6 are Terrace Marshall Jr. (19 catches for 139 yards) and Inmir Smith-Marsette “ISM” (8 catches for 51 yards). They seem to be the 2 WRs that many Panthers faithful think Jalen will push for reps and eventually their spot. Marshall is in the final year of his 4 year rookie contract (drafted in 2nd round out of LSU by Carolina in 2021) and ISM is in the final year of a 2 year contract signed with the Panthers before last season. He was a 5th round pick out of Iowa by the Vikings in 2021 and the Panthers are already his 4th team.
Either of those last 2 are who Jalen will have to market correct to make the 53 man roster as it looks like the Panthers had 6 WR’s active most of last season.

Great info.....gotta love his chances.....the beauty of being a UFA, particularly with guaranteed money.......you can pick where the best fit is

Saw some Panthers fans think his long term role is to be Thielens replacement.
If I was a betting man (which I definitely am), I would wager that Coker makes the 53 out of camp.

I think the guaranteed contract makes it almost a certainty he makes the roster.......same thing with Hartman in Washington

Big difference whether he makes the 53 man “roster” v practice squad “roster”…and serious money difference…($605,000).

Thielen has 2 seasons left on his contract. Another UDFA out of D2 Minnesota State. Quite the career.

No question, he's had a remarkable career....shows that anything is possible once your foot is in the door......while not necessarily comparable from a pedigree standpoint (5 th round, BYU ), we may be seeing a similar career path for Nacua of the LAR

Jalen made reference to Special Teams...I thought that recently...his hands are so good, any chance he makes the roster in part in consideration of what he could add on special teams? Not sure he'd ever break a big run, but I'd assume turnovers would be at a minimum

Per my initial write up at the top, this has Jalen beating out Terrence Marshall Jr (TMJ). The consensus among the diehard panther fan base seems to be that the Panthers have had three full seasons to evaluate TMJ and now in the final year of his 4 year rookie contract, they know what they have and are waiting for the right time to release him. As a second round pick in 2021 w/ only 19 catches for 139 yards and 0 TDs last season, that’s definitely under performance on paper. We shall see.
