Terms of his contract - signing bonus and total guarantee have not been released yet. Only the headline number of 4 years for ~4.1m with a 795k base in 2024 are public.
The current IOL depth chart is very thin for the Chiefs. They have 3 outstanding starters with Joe Thuney at LG (2 years left on his contract), Creed Humphrey at Center (1 year left on his rookie contract) and Trey Smith at RG (also 1 year left on his rookie contract). They traded Nick Allegreti this offseason who had been a key reserve as a combo G/C and played a lot.
It will cost a fortune to sign BOTH Humphrey and Smith to long term deals after this season. Only way it’s possible is to free up a lot of cap space on defense which would likely mean releasing LB Nick Bolton post 2024. The new IOL reserves will have a chance to make a big impression for their futures this season.
Chiefs drafted Cornell grad and Penn State grad transfer Hunter Nourzad in the 5th round last week. He looks to take the place of Allegreti as he’s played all 3 OL positions. As an aside, I think Luke Newman could be the Nourzad of the 2025 cycle. Given his versatility, I think Nourzad has a good shot on the 53 man roster.
Many still expect the Chiefs to bring in an experienced IOL this offseason to push the young guys and be a primary back up. So who will CJ be competing with for the final IOL 53 man roster spot? Looks like Mike Caliendo. Caliendo was a 2022 UDFA out of Western Michigan for the Chiefs and a practice squad player all of his rookie season. He progressed in his second year and was active the entire season.
Kansas City looks to be a great landing spot for CJ as their offense suits his skill set - lots of zone reads and screen game so OL have to be athletic and get down field or on the perimeter. Like Jalen, he’s probably assured of at least a rookie season on the practice squad. Much will depend on some moves KC makes this offseason on the OL.
