Smart, crafty all around guard 2 handed set shotCoach of the Bucks Championship team with Oscar and Kareem Bingo! I believe he was the last set shooter inb the league?? Funny-- teammate Hal Greer was the opposite, in a way, in that he took jump shots for his free throws....

Costello also shot foul shots underhanded. He tried to teach his technique to Wilt, but was not successful.
I remember a game that Costello was thrown out by the ref. He was upset with a call, and in frustration, kicked the ball into the balcony at Convention Hall. Automatic T, and he was escorted back to the lockers.
He should have had a try out with the Eagles. 😊

The underhand free throw was the logical combination to the 2 hand set shot

As a kid, I enjoyed watching Larry Costello, Hal Greer, Dolph Schayes and others as members of the Syracuse Nationals, before they decamped to Philly.

The underhand free throw was the logical combination to the 2 hand set shot .841 FT % for his career and led the league two seasons.

Yes, indeed, I should have mentioned Togo! Although he was originally selected in 1st round as the 5th overall pick of the 1954 draft by the Celtics, he played there for only two years, and was traded to the Nats, where he played from 1956 - 1960.
