Heartbreaking loss.
With that said, we did some good things on both sides of the balll against a pretty good team (imo).
Let’s build on the positives and crush UNH next week.

Nice effort to come back and take lead. Terrible play calling in first half. Embarrassing to lose to Murphy. He was terrible, but he was better than our new OC today. DB's and Pass Rush need to look in mirror tomorrow.
Joe P. played awful in first half, but came back and made some nice throws in second. #8 needs more reps.
Won't make much difference in the long run, as we need to win PL to make playoffs, but not a great start to the Curran Era.

Neither team really deserved to win this game. I thought it was over when we went down 13-3 but the big TD pass totally changed the game. Props for fighting back to get the lead against a talented URI team that tried very hard to beat themselves.
D Line looks like our strength. We've NEVER been this much of a one trick pony on offense, a lot of work to do here or it will be a long season.
IMO, URI can be somewhat competitive in the CAA if they can avoid shooting themselves in the foot. But they don't look like the playoff contender they've been the past few years. We look like a 4th-place-ish PL team right now. Hope to see some improvement.
Our team from last year wins this game by 3-4 TD.

Can this D come up with one final stop down 3 starting DBs?! Crazy effort, regardless Asking Due (who’s of an OLB) to cover is a huge ask Answered. Asking Frankie to cover a slot WR underneath not fair. Ran out of Guys to play in dime 100% correct. DB had a chance to make a tackle around the 10 and froze. Monte had no shot.

Monte had no shot. glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that. Have to be a "dawg" and a ball hunter. Not tentative. In all fairness, injuries bit us and the play calling was worse than my OC in high school who called screens and HB draws every other play.

We almost stole this game. Rhody was the better team and they tried to give it to us but we refused to take it

We almost stole this game. Rhody was the better team and they tried to give it to us but we refused to take it Their WR have good speed and their OL did pretty well. I don't think they are really a great deal better. They tried to hand the game to us with turnovers. Our incompetent play calling really burned us. Fuller played well. Pesansky wasn't bad considering all of the pressure in the first half and some good 2nd half completions.

Actually, I feel disappointed. We have some great players (led by Fuller) and entrusted Dan Curran to assemble the best staff possible. Kudos to Vaganek. Thumbs down to the new OV. We feel like a 3rd or 4th place PL team, but as we saw from the PL OOC schedule, we'll probably still be at or near the top. Rhode Island will be lucky to be .500 in the CAA if they don't clean up their turnovers.

Maybe 1 game is not a big enough sample size in regards to the OC? Next week will be interesting.

Without Laube and Brosmer might be a new look offense. Tonight I felt like we should've had the lead after the first half with the turnovers. Should've been 28-20 or something. And for crying out loud, show some emotion on those terrible calls. Work the refs a little bit

Maybe 1 game is not a big enough sample size in regards to the OC? Next week will be interesting. I seem to recall a lot of criticism of the play calling early in the Chesney era. That didn't last long... of course Sluka's improvisational skills made the actual play called in the huddle just a suggestion.

Very tough loss but as others have said,,we would have stole that game....we just didn't seem to have the swagger that the last few HC teams had....understandable as we are mostly young/inexperienced in a lot of places.....this could actually be a long year I fear....

Swagger...that's a superlative I was having difficulty thinking of. Coach Guns didn't have much swagger. I think Fuller and Robinson were the closest to it.

Was at the game because I took classes at URI in addition to playing and graduating from HC, making this VERY personal; so I brought my binoculars and everything.
Wished I left my 'noc's at home.
Defense looks good, won lots of turnovers for us; not sure if that's an us or them thing but I'll take it.
Was able to see through my bino's that URI's QB was really savvy with the option. Their passing game was stronger then ours.
I think URI has a strong team this year so not sure how I feel about this very close loss, definitely stings for me being from RI.
Looking forward to UNH next week.

Trying to sort through things after the fact....
Thinking back, I know I was spoiled by just how prolific last year's offense was. Stud QB....stud WR, stud RB....one of the best OLs in all of FCS - we would wonder if something was wrong if they didn't put up at least 5 TDs in a game. They were just so good; what an act to have to follow
As for the coaching, I'm thinking maybe they were intentionally trying to be a little conservative; early on at least. It would make sense to go with your surest bet (Fuller) to try to take some of the pressure off. And I did hear Curran liked to use his tight end - Peterson had several targets. We'll see if they open things up a little more next week.
Swagger was mentioned here; and to me, that's the critical thing long term, whether they go 9-3 or 3-9. I would just hate to see all of the cumulative momentum built up over the last 6 years start to evaporate. One reason why a "steal" last night would have been so beneficial imho.
Hope the DB injury situation is not serious.

One thing I really liked during the 2nd quarter was when Fuller got met for a TFL and #8 Pena from the Rams took the time to bend down and help Jordan off the turf. Two BEASTS showing mutual respect out there. Good to see that in today's world of showboating, dancing, turnover and home run chains, posing for team pictures in the EZ after a defensive score, bat flips, etc.

But it was absolutely part of the character of our team the past 3-4 years. Whether there was a cause and effect relationship I'm unsure, but there's no doubt the Chesney model worked. Making our opponents hate us, and an abundance of 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalties were part of that DNA. Kind of the opposite of the Tom Gilmore "just shut up and play, do your job, not HIS job, stick to you're freaking gap" much cleaner approach. Pros and cons to both.

Didn't like the end result but THIS was a GREAT game. Yeah, lots of first game mistakes on both sides. But two red zone stops to allow only 2 FGs was outstanding. Knew the Crusaders would come back and was sure we had the last minute win.
Play that sticks out for me, and have it on video, was Ram coming on the edge got a clear shot at Joe P and jumped on him. Joe literally carried defender on his back about 3 steps but got the pass off. Incomplete but avoided the sack.
The Crusader fumble recoveries and a couple we couldn't recover were the result of very hard hits.
The last series for the URI win was frustrating because it was stop, stop, stop . . . . desperation first down. Again and again. We just couldn't get that last stop when we needed it. Give URI credit.
I predicted a win (wrong, again) but still feel that this team will exceed most folks' expectations this year.

hard to say, I’m seriously just guessing had never worked dime or dollar packages without Comesto, Eli and Jarmo. Like I said I think we literally ran out of guys. I know even quarters would have been a stretch with 6 or 7 DB'S. I am not sure what you think, but I'd almost rather have a WR who played DB in high school out there. Already went back and watched a couple key plays including the final TD. We were actually in a 4-2-5 nickel with only 5 DBs which we ran on passing downs most of the night. Tough to tell with exactly the camera angle but Chiz and Curt appear to be playing some sort of 2 high Safety scheme. Kane and Monte at LB do appear to be in man. Kane moves out of the middle to follow the RB so we were asking Monte to cover Harris at 230 lbs v 170. I would think you would want one of those linebackers out and a 6th DB if we’re running man coverage on a slot receiver as quick as Harris but I just have to think that we didn’t have one. Per the depth chart you’d think Wood or Bestpitch at that point but neither played on D. The 5 DBs after Jarmo got ejected were Curt and Chiz at Saf, Jones and Mills at CB and Due as the overhang Saf. They moved Chiz to Free and Due came in at WS post Jarmo. Eli would have been ideal as the 6th DB on Harris in the slot there. Hope he’s not too banged up. He played great early before leaving the game in Q2.

Given our massive graduation losses and the fact we don’t reload via the transfer portal I’m looking at this as a rebuild/transition year so the outcome is not a shocker. RI is a mid-pack CAA team, after all. Jordan Fuller was as expected and our issues with our passing attack (101 yards) were a combo of play-calling and execution. Forcing three recovered fumbles (and losing none ourselves) was a notable highlight.

And that's finish drives and take care of the football. I really thought we were going to stop them on that last drive. If we could hold the Rams to 1 TD in 59 minutes, thought we'd bend again but not break. Tough. Even if we make the tackle at the 10 yard line on that last play, decent chance we keep them out of the EZ on final 2-3 plays.

First year coaching staff, loss of a ton of starters and a new roster.& new system. Always want to win. But under the circumstances these guys showed resilience & a lott of heart. No doubt this is a reflection of Coach Curran and his coaching staff. Proud of this team & our coach. Gotta' believe good wins are on the horizon. GoCrossGo.
