OR, it can be described as the AD and administration exercising due diligence (without confusion) and making every effort to get the best coach for the job, with all details of his contract in place. It is easier to make up a list to support your view (whatever that may be) when we don't know what actually happened in the selection process or the person who will be selected. Never let facts stand in the way of a forced fixed choice list of options. +1
And would add that can you imagine how much more difficult it would be finding qualified interest in this job without Nate Pine and the Luth family ?
Some act like this is a quasi lay-up....like guys are falling all over themselves to be the Head Coach at HC....in the wonderful Patriot League.
Maybe Pine with help from our Prez and certain BOT members will frankly get very lucky after what certainly appears to be an exhausting and probably frustrating search to get the best man possible.
BTW, is Fordham still searching ?
No one other than 87 thinks this.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I think almost any objective person with any understanding of football and the patriot league would agree that the Lafayette job comes with a much much less degree of risk. Recruiting that talent-rich area of the country with brand new facilities, great academics, the oldest rivalry in college football, and an administration that has proven time and again they're willing to back up the program? Not to mention a Business school, no religious affiliation, and the fact that they don't go out of their way to bill themselves as the biggest multi-cultural safe space on the east coast? I think the Holy Cross job comes with a lot more risk than Lafayette or Fordham. The Luth helps, but it's yet to be realized. Lafayette Athletics are a dumpster fire. They have toyed w going D3 in the last decade and their alumni hate the administration. Without the Kirbys and their tens of millions in gifts, they are nothing athletically. The dumpster fire beat us this year at our homecoming 10-7. They also had 5 1st Team All -Patriot League football players while we had just 1. There may be more than one dumpster fire.

I know what you're saying but they have been below us in PL Commissioners Cup every year since 2012. And they don't even have hockey to root for. To say they have an admin that supports their program is just not true.

No one other than 87 thinks this. It is interesting that some folks can recognize we are a poor football program in a very poor league right now...but are baffled as to why we can't attract a busload of quality coaches.

Cognitive dissonance.
This whole forum can be generally baffling.

No one other than 87 thinks this. It is interesting that some folks can recognize we are a poor football program in a very poor league right now...but are baffled as to why we can't attract a busload of quality coaches. This is just incorrect. The league is down and we have been down in the immediate past. Based on the play in certain games, we are closer than you think. A new coach is a necessity to get us over the hump, but anyone who saw the UNH or UConn games, and was making a honest assessment, would not say we are a poor football program. This year, there were some key injuries and a lot of young guys were playing. We just need to finish the job and win some of those closer games. Does anyone here really think we cannot win a PL title? We had a bad year and we were possibly one win away. For anyone who says, who cares about a PL title, I say with (no) due respect, shut up. We win the league, we get in the playoffs and then we try to win those games. Winning will breed winning. As to the job: The job is/was attractive to many coaches and anyone who says otherwise, does not know what they are talking about. I have no (ZERO) doubt that Pine had many qualified candidates reach out to him and/or show interest. We are down to a few candidates (reportedly). The inclusion of certain names (reportedly) shows that there was more interest than you think, as some of those names would be leaving programs with more success in the recent past. Bitching and moaning is part and parcel of this board, but the level of pessimism lately is just disingenuous and/or expressed without a basis in fact.

I don't think we disagree as to the current state of our program and the current state of the league. But..... Immediate past? 2017: 4-7, 2016: 4-7, 2015: 6-5, 2014: 4-8, 2013: 3-9, 2012: 2-9 Lehigh, 5-7, was the Patriot League Champ this year. The Lehigh fans I spoke to at the SBU game did not think they had a good season at all.

Program needs a complete overhaul...which it essentially is getting.
Gilmore was simply not the right guy for the renewed scholarship-era. Not entirely all his fault (admin. support was/has been lacking, assistant pay was woeful etc) but he just didn't have the right personality, coaching acumen etc etc to make Holy Cross football an annual winner/contender. The coaching change probably should have been made when we returned to scholarship football but that's water under the bridge.
Chesney may be the right guy but I have a lot of reservations. Much of the success to any football program is the cadre of assistant coaches it has...not sure Chesney will be able to assemble such a staff. I'm just very wary of his lack of experience at coaching at this level of football. I know we aren't Bama or Ohio St but he will be taking a very big jump from where he has been to coaching at Holy Cross.

But, 5 years from now, if he is the "real deal" and brings HC back to prosperity (winning records, PL titles), all those reservations and doubts will have been buried in the graveyard of forgotten memories! !

Just a reminder that this was the announcement when TG was fired:
The date was Sunday, October 15. While this seems like an interminably long time, it won't be two months until this Friday.
We thought an announcement would come last week but perhaps we will hear no later than this Friday. More important than the speed of hiring a replacement is the quality of the person selected because outside of a men's basketball coach, this is probably the second most important athletic position on Mt. St. James and I am sure NP wants to get this one right.

Who knows what has transpired in this process, but a "national search" resulting in hiring a guy a cab ride away from Mt St James isn't a good look for one Nate Pine.

We'll see...if it is Chesney, he's about to step into a whole different world. Opening up at Colgate and at BC is a helluva lot different than opening up against Kutztown St and Pace.

Do we really need to run through the thousands of successful coaches who have been successful moving up the coaching ladder and being successful at a higher level? How did Coach K go from Army to Duke? Brad Stevens from Butler to the Celtics? Hell, how did Mike Matheney go from never being in a coaching role to being the manager for the Cardinals?
Do we even go beyond coaching and into other professions? How was the sideline reporter for some news station in Nebraska ready to be on ESPN during a big time football game? Probably because they're talented.
Perhaps Chesney is just very talented. It's not like he's coaching a different sport. The rules are the same. The schemes are the same. If he's a good coach, he will adapt.
You don't like Chesney because of his age, experience, and the school he is coaching at. Seems shortsighted.

Coach K was actually fairly successful at Army and was coaching at the same level as Duke....just sayin'....this is a stretch. Chesney has had some success at Assumption and Salve but those are football programs wholly different than HC's in many ways. A more apt analogy may be Donald Trump as President....oops, politics

Not really....West Point was actually fairly decent in hoop in the late 70s (far better than they've been in the PL overall) but this is immaterial.
I think Chesney would make a good FCS OC....I don't think he's ready to take the position as HC at HC.

What?
Duke is a hell of a lot LOT farther away from Army than HC is from AC, but keep trying to justify it to yourself 87.

In the late 70s both Army and Iona had decent hoop teams with up and coming coaches at the D1 level....Coach K at Army and Jimmy V at Iona.
It wasn't that great of a stretch that they both ended up in the ACC.....Chesney going to HC from AC is more of a stretch....he has no D1 experience, football is a much more involved sport logistically...Coach K and Jimmy V were much better prepared for the jump they took than Chesney is imo....
