The local Holy Cross Alumni Club is hosting a pre-game reception in the Atrium of the arena. All are welcome. What's the weather look like up there right now?

AS I look out my window in uptown Albany, there is about a dusting of snow with much of my lawn bare. It is slightly snowing but no real accumulation at this time. Our Alumni gathering starts at 6.
I was at the last HC/Siena game and will be at this one. Siena is really struggling this year so we certainly can win this one.

I think Siena may be a better team (except for 3 point shooting among all starters) than Albany. This would be a very good win for the Cross, but I am not counting on it. We'll see.

Snowing now about an inch on the ground. Reports of 3-5 way off probably will get 2. Revised forecast is 1-3. Don’t know what the Berkshires might be like.

Huh? 3-9 (#267) Siena is a better team than 11-3 (#108) Albany? Yes, I believe so. Have you checked their respective schedules? Massey has a Strength of Schedule foe Siena at 75 and for Albany at 222. Plus, I said (based in part on that SoS) that they MAY be a better team. You misquoted me (not for the first time I am afraid) as saying Siena IS a better team. You may remember I try not to deal in absolutes.

A Christmas gift from the coaches to the team tonight
This might make little or no sense but IMO a number of the kids are too tentative offensively and I think it carries over to the defensive end where we leave way too many holes to attack or open shooters
Take the brakes off the offense and look to attack the rim earlier in the shot clock—let the kids play a bit but have them run the same sets-should get JF and KC more involved early and put us on the line Defensively shift to a 2-3 or 3-2 and trap on the wings and along the baseline. If we speed it up with traps we might give up easy looks but we will also force them to make quicker decisions
If nothing else they will have more fun, likely will have another 8-10 possessions, and we could find a W at the end of the night
Anyway I enjoy the thoughtful comments posted on the board and wish all a Merry Christmas! .

hard to see implementing new defenses when the freshmen are having a difficult time mastering the two we already have. cannot see the offensive tempo changing much either the game is not fun when you are losing. Coaches stick to what they believe is the best way to win with these players at this stage of their careers.

Coaches stick to what they believe is the best way to win with these players at this stage of their careers. The jury is still very much out as to whether the issue is with (a) the freshmen having trouble "mastering" the defense or (b) the structure of the defense being flawed. Joe Scott, our "defensive coordinator," has had an average defensive ranking of 187 over 15 seasons as a head coach, and if you remove the two clear outliers in which the defense was ranked 56th and 43rd, the average would be 209. Like Carmody, Scott's career rebounding numbers are also dreadful -- 336 on ORebs and 223 on DRebs. Those numbers do not give me much confidence that the defense will drastically improve simply because the freshmen will become sophomores and so on.

Hoops completely understand your point and agree with it, but in an effort to change up a bit and break the losing trend thought it might be interesting.
I believe a 2-3 is a boiler plate zone they likely have played since grade school, trapping or even a 3-2 perhaps is an issue for rotations on the weak side, but they should get more tips, cause a few turnovers and more importantly cover more lanes. Not sure this current group is quick or long enough for the 1-3-1 with the different combinations we have on the floor
Offensively just looking to get it to be a faster game which I believe is a more natural style of play for many on the roster. Not sure how many HS or AAU games any of the kids played with scores in the 40s.
I never coached or played a game in college, so I am way out of my league here as I offer a different approach.

Someone send FHoFC RW's treatise and videos on the matchup zone to Coach Scott. Much to learn there. Scrap what we are now doing. Good sample says it ain't working.

Like Carmody, Scott's career rebounding numbers are also dreadful -- 336 on ORebs and 223 on DRebs. Scott's Air Force and Denver teams consistently mirrored Carmody's teams statistically in a number of categories - possessions/game (pace), offensive efficiency, A/FGM, and rebounding, among others. He may be as close to a doppelganger as CBC has - understandably, perhaps, since Carmody helped recruit him to play at Princeton, then had him on his staff there for four years.

Does CBC take the bus with the players or a la F O'Hanlon does he take a limo?

This game should tell us much about the way ahead since Siena appears to be a PL level team. Niego or Grandison, Benzan or Zig starting and finishing? Dumping the ball into the post for JF regularly? Butler allowed to take 3's from Buddy Venne land? KC productive enough to be the star player we all want and need him to be? CG showing the flair he has lost recently? Minutes for CLS or Copeland? CBC game prep? Shot clock issues on offense? 3-point defense weakness or fix? Team energy? Any chance we see Stevens or Perkins on the floor tonight?
