Who knows how this will go down, but I'm hopeful the mascot name will be retained. I agree with others here that the shield will be retained as well - too much time and too many resources went into the latest re-brand to ditch it now. I can live with the sword disappearing but I like the iconography of the knight in armor. That should remain given that it's used by other institutions without incident or controversy.
I have this feeling that the dark horse outcome is we keep all iconography, drop "Crusaders" and become the Purple Knights. Not saying that's what I want to see happen, but I wouldn't be shocked. I have no inside knowledge and honestly I'm kind of over it at this point. The College should be spending its time with more important matters, IMO, and needs to recognize that it can't be all things to all people.

There is already a New England Catholic college which are the Purple Knights--i.e. St. Mike's. I can't see us doing that.

Reading about the Purple Knights just reminded me that there are a handful of schools with multiple nicknames. The obvious one is Army which are both the Black Knights and the Cadets. Although it has fallen out of practice, Georgia Tech was known as the Engineers as well as the Yellow Jackets. I'm pretty sure that Auburn was also in that group although I can't recall the lesser known name
Maybe the BoT will go Brooks-Mulledy on us and have a second nickname. Focus and branding could slowly shift from one to the other without creating an uproar by getting rid of the Crusader. TPTB can pander to the ultra politically correct while placating the vast majority

Tom, you have just the twisted thinking that would make you a perfect member of the BoT. As to "Purple Knights," 8485 stealing my idea, once again! My thought and posts for months has been that TPTB will change to Purple Knights so the logo doesn't have to change; the "offensive" nature of being a Crusader will disappear; the College already uses that term for alums when they reach their 50th reunion. Most importantly save money and MAYBE not pi$$ too many people off. I was cautioned not to communicate this too publicly as the Board might "jump" on the idea. Now, all they have to do is flip-flop the terms. Students, teams, alums are ALL "Purple Knights" and when they age to their 50th reunion, THEN they become "Crusaders" because who could get angry with a bunch of harmless old men, and eventually women?!

Regis High School: Raiders and Owls. Although I am surprised the left wing righteous warriors haven't gone after "Raiders."

Auburn is the Tigers but I think has also been known as the Plainsmen. You also hear "War Eagles" for Auburn Let's not forget boston college, known most frequently as the "Eagles", but referred to by some as the "losers" or "clowns"..............

I have this feeling that the dark horse outcome is we keep all iconography, drop "Crusaders" and become the Purple Knights. At the risk of sounding like a cynic, how long would it be before the politically correct realize that the typical medieval knight was no Sir Galahad and start baying about "Purple Knights?" After all, Pope Urban called the First Crusade to get the perpetually-warring knights and their liege lords out of Europe.

...and how long until the "Cross" itself comes again under fire for any of several reasons? Of course, the BoT could simply keep the Crusader nickname and mascot and avoid much of the possible PC turmoil ahead.

The Cross itself should be safe. Holy Cross is a Catholic college and should not change that distinction in any way--those who object can look elsewhere. However, I do know that in these days, anything good or wholesome is subject to attack.

After all, the medieval crusaders were Christians in theory fighting for Christian causes

I hope that is the case. Will the faculty who agitated to start this accept such a decision? Will some of the 50 actually attend a game?

Surprised the mass email didn't wind up in the spam folder!!!!
The decision basically came out the way that Fr. B. hinted in his interview with NPR (WBUR).
