- HC should no longer be Crusaders. Their actions were atrocious by standards 800 years later and that outweighs any justification of the stated objective of fighting to save Christianity WRONG- The Holy Cross Crusader represents the many fine, upstanding, honorable Crusaders that made up a good percentage of those Crusade contingents - UMass should no longer be the Minuteman. It sends a bad message having a gun toting mascot-- WRONG - A state legislator has called for the name of Civil War General Joseph Hooker to be removed from the entrance way to the Massachusetts statehouse because his name elicits comments that are sexually harassing--- WRONG--really moronic suggestion
- Statues of Winston Churchill should be removed because he didn't like Muslims even if he played a huge roll in defeating the Nazis-- WRONG - Yawkey Way needs to revert back to Jersey St. Yawkey's known racism taints his philanthropic endeavors-- NOT SURE--don't know enough about him
- The Tampa Bay baseball team should change their name because it glorifies Satan-- WRONG, of course--understand the example
- The Star Spangled Banner shouldn't be our national anthem because the never played 3rd verse is racist-- WRONG - The Stars and Bars should not be flown over the South Carolina statehouse (for obvious reasons)-- AGREE- I feel like we are barraged with the need to change all manner of things. This is at a point where lots of people, including me, just tune out and any such opinion is tossed aside as wacko PC rantings. The flip side is this has become the boy that cried wolf and legitimate examples of inappropriate symbols get lost in the noise. My thoughts above in BOLD-- your last paragraph recaps the situation beautifully

Re: General Hooker. It was "Fightin' Joe" Hooker who first allowed women to be present on the company streets (rows of tents) of the soldiers. Naturally, a number of these women were wives, mothers and sisters, but many were ladies of "easy virtue" plying their trade. Those women came to be known as "Hooker's Ladies" later shortened to Hookers. If we describe his role in this part of history, can that be viewed as a "micro-aggression?"

While Gen Hooker might have allowed women in camp, the term "hooker" to refer to prostitute is generally regarded as predating the Civil War.

Shows how general knowledge can often be incorrect. I had misplaced my copy of the second edition of John Russell Bartlett's "Dictionary of Americanisms," published in 1856. In looking at it I see that you are quite correct. However, it also appears that the use was primarily among sailors until the Civil War - so I will continue to tell how it became more "popularized." IMHO it makes a better story.

So you can be a “Crusader” but you can’t look like a “Knight”. Stupid.

A piece on Fox & Friends Sunday Show featured the logo change and quotes from our President—Fox called it another attempt by universities to be politically correct- such a predictable but sad decision

The more I consider the email from Phil Boroughs the more angry I become. There is nothing worse than an individual, group or institution that is spineless. And clearly the BOT and Phil Boroughs are clearly spineless. Yes, we will let the community say they are Crusaders but the reasonable depictions of a Crusader is not. Either it is or it ain’t. Phil - don’t let the door hit your backside on the way out. And to the board that allowed this to go down this path, shame on you - those that try to make everyone happy, make no one happy. You would think that all The business experience you gained over the years in your careers would have taught you that. Leadership is more than what you have capitulated to - shame on you. Love the trick where you remove the title Father from a priests name because you disagree with something they did. Would be like me not referring to someone as a Doctor because I didn't like their diagnosis. You clearly have been drinking too much of the Jesuit Kool-Aid.

My wife ordered a bunch of Crusader stuff from the bookstore. Lady on the phone said the Crusader stuff is flying off the shelves and they’ve heard from a lot of angry alums about the Crusader.

When I raised this after our 50th reunion weekend last summer, some folks here said this was all nonsense. I guess it was a bigger issue than some were willing believe. In any case I stocked up.
