In the opening NCAA game St.Francis(Pa) has made the unwise(to say the least) decision to run with Uconn the early result—after 5 mins, Uconn leads 25-8, if they continue at this pace (very unlikely, but not impossible), they could reach 200, or close

"Ouch" does not quite capture the pain that such a game causes, for fans, for players (at least those on St Francis) and for women's hoops in general.

Do not feel sorry for st. Francis, at least for the coach, whose team has shot faster than UConn Perhaps feel sorry for his players who are trying to execute his disastrous strategy

Gino should be embarrassed by that result. Of course, if he were that score would not have happened in the first place.

If nothing else Coach Haigh is a man of his word. On recruiting visits 5 years ago he said he didn't care who they played, his team's would press, run and get shots up. He said they would not back down and try to limit the margin of defeat, even against a team like UConn.

Ten players played between 10 and 25 minutes. One player played 29. Seems like a reasonable distribution of minutes in an NCAA tournament game. He’s trying to get his team prepared to win a national championship. Getting his regulars 20-25 minutes in a 40 minute game doesn’t seem unreasonable. It’s not his fault the other coach decided to play run and gun.

Gino should be embarrassed by that result. Of course, if he were that score would not have happened in the first place. I disagree 100%. There was very little he could do about it. SF pressed, pushed a very fast tempo, and launched threes within seconds of getting possession. There were a total of 98 possessions in the game - which is an incredible number, about 56% more possessions than in an average HC men's game. . As pointed out above, SF didn't care about the margin of defeat. UConn starters only played an average of 22 minutes. As one women's coach pointed out, the SF coach would have been incensed had UConn started holding the ball and not playing normal offense to keep down the final margin. The UConn bench scored 62 points btw.

His top sub, Azura Stevens, was limited to only 15 minutes on the court. His second best sub, Megan Walker - who normally plays 16 mpg - got 25 minutes. At this point, UConn's goal is to win a national championship. To not give his top subs the minutes he thinks they need to be ready for the next few games would be a bit silly - especially after not playing a real game for 11 days. The St. Francis coach was not unhappy at all with how the game was played.'
One other thing. UConn only has 11 players on their roster. Thus one of their two top subs (either Walker or Stevens) HAD to be in the game once the starting five was out. Auriemma opted for Walker, who is the weaker of the two top subs.

Why doesn’t geno carry more than 11 ? is it because he uses men against his first string in practice ? Wasn’t Walker No..! In some scouting services ? can’t even get scrub time ?

He started the year with 13 scholarship players - which is the norm for women's ball. One got injured and one transferred out at Christmas. Having male practice players - which many D1 programs have - has nothing to do with the number of players he brings in. He is very selective about the character of the players he offers. Playing time in his system is earned by the intensity and effectiveness of players in practice. If you don't perform there, you won't see much playing time, if any. Even Breanna Stewart, who was far better than Walker, was benched for several games her freshman year. Also was benched for virtually an entire game (vs Memphis) as a junior. That has happened to many of their players at various times - including many starters.

You can spin it any way you want. Geno did not have to win by 88 points. He didn't even have to win by 5 points. But he didn't do anything wrong winning by the margin he did. That is the kind of game St. Francis wanted to play - and Auriemma only used his starters about 22 minutes each - which probably wasn't enough after being off for 11 days. And he only played his best sub for 15 minutes. One thing I can guarantee is the St. Francis coach would have been livid if UConn had started milking the clock and not playing their normal game out of pity.

You can spin it any way you want. Geno did not have to win by 88 points. Don’t you think it would have been even more insulting if UConn just took a shot clock violation for all of their possessions in the second half? To quote Dan Hawkins: “This is Division 1, not intramurals.”
