247 Sports has finally reported the commitment to Holy Cross by DB Terrence Spence (Commitment #1). Surprisingly, after initially showing Spence as unrated, 247 Sports has now given him a rating of 3* (81). Breezy, this rating upgrade for a recruit verbaling to an FCS school seems very atypical. Was that higher rating a result of someone discovering he had 16 offers#, including six FBS (and a Power Five) school, and his new-found stars are because of the FBS offers? I worry this *** now opens the door to other FBS offers. # according to Rivals.

PP -- I don't know the answer to your question, but it may be academic, as 247 Sports has now reduced Spence's rating to 2* (79). No discernible reason. Spence is listed but not rated by Rivals.

People have claimed for a long time that, for example, many of Notre Dame's "Five Stars" became "Five Stars" after they committed there. So I don't doubt that sort of thing happening.

FCS RECRUITING: Patriot League And Recruit Rankings - Nov. HERO SPORTS herosports.com/fcs/football-2019-patriot-league-recruiting-rankings-oct-ajajAh yes, the team rankings. So what is this "top half of the Patriot League" team ranking based on so far? First, numbers of recruits on board, plus what other offers did these recruits have before they committed? Now ... this is still early in the process, and there are several programs that recruit "later" in the cycle because their hotbeds are a bit different. Prospects can sign for the first time in December during the early period, or they can wait until February. Every program is different in its approach. As of right now? Holy Cross isn't just winning the recruiting battle, the Crusaders are running away with it with 17 early commitments -- and these kids are quite coveted. Six of them hold FBS offers and all but two of them hold other Division I offers. Behind the Crusaders, Bucknell is a solid second and then Colgate's depth edges out Fordham and Georgetown's small-class quality at this point. Lehigh and Lafayette also have their 2020 class highlights and have room to grow their groups quite a bit before the two signing days. PATRIOT LEAGUE TEAM RANKING (AS OF NOV. 4) 1. Holy Cross 2. Bucknell 3. Colgate 4. Fordham/Georgetown (tie) PATRIOT LEAGUE TOP 25 RECRUITS (AS OF NOV. 4) NOTE: These high school recruits are ranked by how many other college options these commitments had, and who those offers came from. HC - 10 Bucknell/Colgate/Fordham/Gtown - 3 Lehigh - 1 Lafayette - 1
The only kids I see on this list that HC offered and went elsewhere are Denucci, Goss; I may be missing a name or two.
Kids not mentioned - Vaganek (coaches' son who doesn't post anything but have heard he received a number of CAA offers), Coker (had offers from UNH, Howard, Duquense), Pacific (2 other offers), Matt Kane - FS from FLA (two offers), McCauley (2 other offers from PL), Siderman (offer from FAU and putting up big numbers in CA), Christo Kelly - looks like 2 other offers
If they get these in the boat at 17 in 6+ weeks its' a great start to the recruiting season.

I recall now the expert posters who opposed the hiring of Bob Chesney because “he won’t be able to recruit D-1 players” and/or “he doesn’t have experience in recruiting for a high academic school”.
Looks like he and his staff have done well

Let's add a cautionary note -- these are all verbal commitments and nothing is certain until the Letter of Intent is signed on signing day (and the early signing day as of now is only about 6 weeks away).
That being said, the Holy Cross verbal commitments form the nucleus of an excellent recruiting class (albeit with a couple of needs still not fulfilled).
The Hero Sports dismissal of ratings by recruiting web sites is understandable. Players get different ratings on different sites and the ratings can be changed -- up or down -- seemingly at whim. However, in my view, those ratings should not be dismissed as meaningless; instead, they offer another insight into the quality of the recruit class.
(As to PP's comments regarding Hunter Helms -- he is indeed from South Carolina, but Rivals and 247 Sports both are prone to miss offers and commitments. For example, although 247 Sports shows Quinton Gregory as a 3* recruit, it does not show that he has received an offer from and/or committed to Holy Cross.)

Not at all surprised re: Helms. Lot of Dad’s twitter activity this season seemed geared to bringing additional recruiting attention to his son. Wish them well. Moving on.

I wouldn't necessarily write him off yet. Most likely he'll move on, but if this is a case of the dad wants him to go to a higher level, it's possible he just humors him and still decides he likes us.
Either way, I like what we have with Butash and Siderman.

I’ve heard from reliable sources that Butash is lacking in some qb fundamentals to play at this level - he needs time

I’ve heard from reliable sources that Butash is lacking in some qb fundamentals to play at this level - he needs time I'll respond with the fact I'm biased... But that's a pretty vague statement. I've been hearing pretty good things of late. Obviously, CD has the position and doing ok, so a freshman sits the bench. But lacking QB fundamentals. I'd like more details.
