White Sox got good outings from starter and long reliever in a close game. Let’s hope the starter gets rocked early today and Cronin gets a shot. I hope his family and friends are able to get to Chicago to see it.

He must had been good enough for Kansas State though... The issue isn’t whether he was good enough at 22 to play big time ball. Obviously, he is. The question is what happened at 17 when he was looking for schools. I’m guessing that his talent was under appreciated in high school and on the club circuit which is how he ended up in D3. Should we go through the Babson kids that played at BC the last few years also? Shouldn't HC have been recruiting them out of high school?

Probably because you weren’t scouting recruits for Holy Cross. An obvious flaw in the Crusader baseball program.

Kid was a throwback- 3 sports in high school. I know he played Legion ball as well, don't think he was in any other baseball program.

Probably because you weren’t scouting recruits for Holy Cross. An obvious flaw in the Crusader baseball program. Given all the other connections with the kid's family, I hope they at least took a look. All I'm saying. Kid may not have wanted to go there, may not have had the grades (although #33 and #39 should get you in both of those places, no?), staff might not have felt he was as good as some other catcher they had. Let's not get into the "flaws" in our baseball program. Clearly there are, shall we be charitable, at least a few.

Now listed on the 40 Man Roster, he is wearing #59. I didn't realize how big he was (always good for a relief pitcher) 6-4, 225.

He was never skinny in college, which set him apart from most other 6-4 guys at our level. Plus he was very athletic. Five years ago he was 195 (as a senior). He’s a fitness fanatic who works as a trainer (throwing and lifting) in the off season. Throwback throwdown video of Declan in his Regis uni dunking at Fordham in the high school playoffs:

White Sox 2-0 since DC's call up. Clearly, making a big difference for clubhouse morale and the results are showing.

DC comes on in the top of the six this afternoon.
F9 E1 (tricky play in front of home plate) 6-4-3 DP
First pitch strike to all three batters.
He's known to be a groundball pitcher -- nicely done inducing the inning-ending double play.
12 pitches. 10 strikes.

After only throwing 12 pitches in the sixth, he came out for the seventh.
First pitch strike to the first two batters, resulting in groundouts.
2-3 3-1
BB to the third batter.
And in his welcome-to-the-big-leagues moment, Jose Ramirez hits a line drive over the right field wall for a two-run homer.

/\ Ramirez hit one off the starter two inning prior. Tough matchup for the righty rookie pitcher.

Here’s a tidbit : as far as I can tell he is the first man named Declan to reach the major leagues. There have been other Cronins, of course, most notably HOFer Joe Cronin , infielder and manager

Joe Cronin was player-manager of the Red Sox for 13 years and then two more when he finished playing through 1947. When he died there was a nice story about the kids who lived in his Newton neighborhood when he was player and manager. He would take kids with him when he drove into the park for a game. They would go in with him for free, watch the game and then he would drive them home afterward. A simpler time in America.

I was in Chicago this past weekend for a wedding and hoped to take in a White Sox game but the wedding folks inconveniently scheduled their events at bad times.

Declan has only given up 2 hits in 3 innings over 2 appearances. Unfortunately, they were both home runs. 3 earned runs. 1 BB and 1 K. Hopefully he gets a long leash given that the White Sox are going nowhere and traded away some guys at the deadline.

With Cole pitching for the Yanks tonight vs. the White Sox, it might be a one-sided game where Declan could get another shot in relief. All games in this series available on YES network. Someone should take a picture of the two HC grads on the field tonight - Declan and Matt Blake (Yanks pitching coach)

Pitched a scoreless top of 6th on 22 pitches. Single, strike him out throw him out DP, single, walk and strike out. Will be interesting to see if the Chisox bring him out for the top of the 7th.
