The first of a long string of full-house crowds on top of the Hill. Remember when the students went to games??
Before the game, Michael Vicens made it clear that if he touched the ball in our first possession, he was going to shoot. He did, and he did, but I don’t recall if he made the shot or even if we scored first.

For those who were there Do you recall who scored for us ? Chris P ? Mike V ? Billy D ? It’s not out of the realm of possibility that I have the stat sheet someplace. I’ll try to check tomorrow, and will report back. My guess is that the starting five were Potter, Vicens, Marty Halsey, Kevin McAuley and Peter Beckenbach. First off the bench would probably have been Doran, Leo Kane and Jimmy Dee.

I'd bet on Doran being a starter, wouldn't think Beckenbach was that advanced that he'd be in the starting lineup from the get go.
But that's just a guess!
I remember later in the year the team was short handed and Steve Anderson* helped out in a couple games, a la James Stowers.
*believe Steve was helping coach the JVs; he was still around but not playing

We missed our first 4 shots and were down early.

For those who were there Do you recall who scored for us ? Chris P ? Mike V ? Billy D ? Was not there but Doran had 22 and Dee had 17. Vicens only had 8 (all in the first half) as he was plagued by foul trouble and fouled out early.

O’Connor was the one I remember from the article I read. He had 11 rebounds in the second half when HC took control of the game. I also learned that Loyola was coached by one of Blaney’s former Dartmouth assistants.

Before the knee injury John was one of the better centers to play for HC. Had he been healthy, those very good teams he played on would have been significantly stronger. He could defend and rebound with the best.

Took the Dartmouth job when George left (at a very young age to be a head coach), then ended up at LC. 10-42 at Dartmouth. Bad record, but look at this list, George had a losing record and was their best coach since WW2. www.coachesdatabase.com/dartmouth-big-green-basketball/

I'll always remember his monster game against a very good Umass squad in the Colonial Classis at the old Garden. 22 points and 21 rebounds or 21 points and 22 rebounds.

He could defend and rebound with the best. It was actually an Achilles tear - suffered when John grabbed a defensive rebound, threw the outlet pass, and started to run up court. The trailing referee stepped on his heel, and the Achilles went. Little known fact: O’Connor was drafted in a very late round by the Dallas Cowboys.

I can still see that injury to John. ☹️ It was painful to watch him being taken off the court.
I was sitting in the bleachers(concessions side) for the game against Northeastern. The injury occurred in front of the Huskies bench.
John really showed promise of being an outstanding player until he was hurt. The following year when he returned, you could see a dramatic change in his mobility on the court.

I recall the story of John’s operation. He asked to watch the surgery and was allowed to, I believe. I think he was either pre-med or considering it.

Yes what could have been if O'Connor and Perry had not gone down that year.

The timeline would be about right to be during HoF'er Jenkins brief stint in MA with the Red Sox
