Arguably, the most relevant sport on the national scene, Agree, but lacrosse is only relevant in some(few ?) areas in the nation so is it truly a national sport when a relatively limited number of schools play D1 ?

Title 9 has not help much but Women's lacrosse has grown significantly. Lacrosse and Pickleball are the fastest growing sports. Pickleball is mostly for folks that can't play tennis anymore.

Smaller court so widows are able to get guys with bad wheels to play. Not sure what it says about the US but a brilliant idea. Every time you goggle Pickleball a retirement community in Florida or California pops up. Anyway back to Lacrosse. www.lax.com/stories/lax-video/2017-college-lacrosse-promo/

Also over the past five years, about 30% more high school have added the sport. It is growing rapidly in Texas, the West Coast, the Southeast (NC, GA, FL), and parts of the Midwest. The growth of D1 programs has been limited by Title IX, but it has grown from 57 to 71 over the past decade. Additionally, many major colleges have strong club teams, but they cannot go D1 due to title IX. Women's D1 programs gave grown from 82 to 112 over the decade as well. In D2/D3, there are now over 300 varsity men's teams as of 2016.

Remember when it was only big in certain eastern areas with the historic connection with Native American tribes like upstate NY, Long Island (think Jim Brown), Maryland?
Very big in public high schools on LI in the early 60's.

In Northern NJ (Bergen County), the numbers are up, programs are being added and fan support is growing. I was an officer in the Bergen County Women's Coaches Association when we added girls lax to our list of sponsored championship sports. I think it was one of my better moves.

It's interesting because anyone associated with lacrosse will spout that it is growing like mad, taking over and its just a matter of time before it topples baseball as our national pastime. However, numbers like those in WaPo and NCAA Final Four attendance would be cause to pump the brakes a bit. It's a bit like microbrews - while folks are all amped up still a tiny, tiny slice of the national pie in their impact.

Well, it is growing like mad in North Jersey as the growing number of high school teams will show. I am not sure how the growing numbers in high school lacrosse relate to the NCAA at this point. I would also never be so silly as to say it will topple baseball as our national pastime (exaggeration to try to make a point?). It has been seen as a prep school sport but interest in our inner-city schools is growing. If we are looking at "a tiny slice of the national pie" then lax can fit into the same category as ice hockey and Holy Cross sports, can't it? The cost of equipment has been a real issue on a youth level. But, as fewer kids play youth football, there may be more money available at that level.

The sport is definitely creeping to the west. In women's USC and Stanford are in the top 20, USC being #4. Also men's wise you have University of Utah expected to roll into D1 in 2019. The sport has grown in Colorado, Utah and California where high school participation is up but coaching is an issue. Like anything you need to have a good coaching base. If you look at the schools that dominate in the west they are usually private schools that can afford to pay for coaches.

tough conditions tmro for lax, with temps not getting out of the 20's. Women open up vs. BC, and then the men have two scrimmages vs. Sacred Heart and Merrimack in the afternoon. Lehigh, BU, and Bucknell men play regular season games

Providence, who HC plays this weekend, lost to BU last weekend in double overtime, 8-7.
PC was picked to finish fifth in the six team Big East. They were 7-9 a season ago.

I watched for some of the second quarter. It may me cold looking at the game. Traction underfoot seemed to fairly good, given the snow was not completely brushed from the field. Next year, this would be a game they'd play indoors in the NFH. I still don't understand what psychological advantage is gained from running around / standing on the sidelines barelegged, in conditions such as they were today.
But hey, I got cold just from watching.

Men lost 10-4.
Women defeated Fairfield 11-8. No indication whether coach-in-chief was on the sidelines; he has said he's five weeks behind on the upcoming season.

I see the roster addition of a 4th goalie (walk-on?), soph Riley Grady, to join the 3 frosh. improvement in the net and faceoffs obviously very important going forward.

looks to be a tough season if these first 2 games are any indication. we were down 11-2 at the half, and uvm cruised from there winning 14-8. did someone say this program had finally turned the corner and gained some traction to play at the pl level ? another example of a sport where we've played at a 'maac' level for many years.
