Seems like this deserves to be broken out into its own thread:

Well, that is sad news indeed. Here's a spin, we will be taking a winning streak (of 2) into the start of the next season for the first time in many years.
My thanks to Matt and to Austin for their leadership and strong play. We now have a team of D1 players with at least a year of experience as a team. I hope all remain healthy and that we soon see Covid in the rear view mirror.
GO CROSS.
PS: This is a positive note from Coach Nelson to take forward rom this season! "The future of Holy Cross basketball is very bright, and we have laid a great foundation moving forward."

WTF? First, let me say I hope whomever is tested positive is nevertheless feeling well and not facing any uphill battles with illness. With that out of the way, how the [$4 Yonkers word] do you let this happen the day before the tournament starts? With a HOME game, and travel not necessary, no less?
Navy, in first place, and with the rest of the academy closed, isolated the basketball team using operational foresight and wisdom and discipline.
I am doing a bit of the blame game for HC at this point (and it could have been a trainer or medical staff or other non-player who is close enough to the team to trigger the SCRAM button), but this is highly disappointing and damning for what seems to be the years-long comedy of errors with respect to men's basketball and HC athletics more generally.

Who else in Patriot League men's basketball didn't have a Covid issue this season? HC was simply unlucky to have theirs last or near last (I'm guessing perhaps Lehigh or Lafayette didn't, can pretty much pinpoint an issue at the other 7 colleges).

While disappointing, I think the fact the team managed to complete their regular season as scheduled, was pretty amazing.

Loyola is about to unpack their bags. I don't imagine they are too upset about foregoing 14 hours in the bus.

First, I'm genuinely sorry HC won't be able to participate. That's a gut punch for the kids and everyone associated with the team, including the alums. Second, I'll be surprised if HC is the only team that has to pull out of the tournament before it's over. Third, I'm sure you'll find out in due time what happened, but it may be that the person who tested positive thought they did everything right with regard to mitigation and still got it. That's how insidious this virus is-and some of the new strains are even more contagious than the original COVID-19. It's just really difficult to keep people from congregating, even carefully, with other people.

Feb 27, positives: 2 students,1 staff, 1132 tests
Feb 28 no testing
March 1 positives: 3 students, 744 tests
March 2 positives: 1 student (so far)
From the timing, it would appear to be one of three student positives on March 1. The Brooks Hall cluster was Feb 23/24.

Just so, so disappointing. Let's hope the infected student recovers quickly
I pray--can we get in one football game?

Too much testing. Don’t go looking for problems.

Too much testing. Don’t go looking for problems. Really? Michigan Athletics on the other hand had these test results for last week on February 26 Total individuals (student-athletes + coaches/ staff) tested between Feb. 20-26: 5,014 Positive test results between Feb. 20-26: 13 (13 student-athletes, 0 staff). Now that is a lot of tests for an Athletic Department.

Too much testing. Don’t go looking for problems. Can't operate that way in spring 2021, hopefully that won't be the case in 2021-2. Again, just bad luck that Covid waited to affect HC now.

This stinks. I feel bad for Austin and Mat they deserved a playoff game to end their careers.
I really wish they could test everybody else and if they don't have it, still play.
But hey, we got to play more regular season games then a team like Loyola.
Which was the most important thing to do this year. Play as many games as you can.

Too much testing. Don’t go looking for problems. That's a refrain voiced last year by someone (with acquired immunity) who, with his wife (also with acquired immunity), were vaccinated in January. ___________ The NCAA states this with respect to basketball. and, So, if a school wants to compete in NCAA basketball, it has to test.

Disappointed for the HC players, coaches, students, alums and fans that HC will not be able to participate in the tournament. Would have liked to have seen how we would have fared vs. Loyola (and Navy if we got past Loyola). In any case, as RGS pointed out, this is the first season since ‘58-‘59 that we ended the year with two wins and the first time since ‘72-‘73 that we ended with a win.
Let’s hope that all Tier 1 personnel can regain/maintain good health, obtain vaccinations and have a more normal off season so that the team can start the ‘21-‘22 season on time.
I’ll look forward to seeing how the returning players improve and seeing what Kenney, Lewis and Luc can bring to the table.

Shouldn't have been surprised, but still felt a sense of shock when seeing this thread. Really feel bad for them, especially Austin and Matt. Just glad they got to end their careers (if they are over) with some great performances. Takes some of the juice out of March Madness for me.

Nature of the game in the 21st century. Basically everybody goes to a conference tournament. Under normal circumstances, the only way to end the season with a win is to win the NCAA,NIT, or one of those minor extras like HC played in 2014

It is a kick in the gut to Matt and Austin..I'm sure they will remember their last games at HC as big wins, that may temper the ending..It would be nice if Crossporters spent a minute and sent each of them a note congratulating them on their careers at HC...Just might take the edge off the ending..
On the positive side, the team ended the season with 2 solid wins in the forefront of their minds!

Sad. Poor timing for us and for our great seniors Austin Butler and Matt Faw. These 2 deserve an avalanche of credit for their role in bridging this program between 2 regimes with very different coaching philosophies. They should be very proud of everything they've accomplished.

I'm fairly sure given the testing dates that it is a student, but I suspect there are several students in Tier One who are not rostered players. There were several at the BostU game.

Other than a manager, what non roster student would be Tier 1?
