Everyone should calm down. There is no indication Chesney is leaving right now. I hope our new AD gives him an extension and compensation equal to his contributions to the program. We should be paying at least as much of the CAA programs we are seeking to compete against.
If Chesney leaves for an opportunity he feels is better for his family and coaching future, good for him. I will thank him for his service. I would tend to think continuity with James as HC would be the obvious choice, but any contemplation of a successor is really premature at this point.

If he is offered something he can’t refuse, he’ll take it; if not, he’s back. Agreed. Reading between the lines, he’s certainly looking and willing to interview (if he hasn’t already) at other schools. And if he can negotiate a good contract, he’s gone. Not a surprise - these coaches looking to move up know the deal. Wow. I don't see anything like this "reading between the lines." As I've said before, I don't have the slightest idea what he's thinking and I don't think anyone else does either. I hope no one hurts themselves on this thread as they leap to conclusions and breathlessly analyze, (mis)interpret, and parse every sentence, phrase, word, syllable, and diphthong uttered by BC.

Didn’t Chesney just convince 13 seniors to forego other plans and return as super seniors ?

Meaning it would take the moon and the stars for him to leave now, not just one or the other.

We’re going to lose Chesney at some point in the next couple of years. I think his contract should be strong enough so that he does not leave us for a Delaware or anywhere else where he’s going to make in the range of $400K-$600K. If he gets an offer of $1M+, it is what it is and we’ll have to deal with it at that point.

Guys who take over a train wreck of a program and win three league titles in a row and go toe-to-toe with #5 in the country tend to get better job offers. That’s especially so when they’ve done similar jobs at 3 other schools. Assuming we perform similarly or better next year with a healthy Dobbs and all of our 5th year seniors, Chesney will get some good offers. That assumes we survive the Delaware thing this year. At some point, one of these offers will be good enough to entice him to leave. My point is that we should pay him enough that we make sure it’s something really good that makes him leave. Not Delaware for $400K. Will HC step up and do everything it can to keep the one extremely successful coach we’ve had since RW? We shall see.

All good points HC92. I actually think the package at Delaware could even be more than that. With that said, it's my understanding it's Carty's job and hopefully they can concentrate as a staff at signing some semblance of a class this year.

Chesney might want Delaware…of course they might not want him. I agree Carty seems to be option 1 there.

I think if Carty was offered the numbers in excess of say 375 he would have accepted. It might be possible the AD has decided the salaries are crazy and she isn't going back to the 588 number or anywhere close to it. So Carty does have a decision to make and how long does UD give him to pull the trigger. If the numbers are allegedly close to the lower end, HC should just pony up and get a deal done. If it is too much higher than that number some individual is going to have to appear out of nowhere and do his/her magic

It's my understanding Carty has accepted the deal and will be the coach. I have no idea why they haven't announced it yet.

It is also helpful to BC for HC to know he’s a hot commodity and looking. (This is speculation, of course)

perhaps for another thread
but what is the impact on the current roster of Chesney's apparent interest in leaving HC? especially the rising sophomore group.

It would also be helpful if they put a recruiting class together for the future beyond just next year.

perhaps for another thread but what is the impact on the current roster of Chesney's apparent interest in leaving HC? especially the rising sophomore group. From what facts, other than his success, do you conclude that BC has an "apparent interest" in leaving? He may indeed leave; it's how these things often go. But there are sometimes coaches who stay where they are for a long time. So while BC may leave I, in the spirit of the baseless conclusions posted herein, submit the following: 1. BC loves HC 2. HC oves BC 3. BC's wife and children love living in the Worcester area 4. BC is going to be offered an extension with a generous raise by the new AD 5. BC is going to stay for at least a four year extension and maybe beyond.

I remain concerned that Chesney knows how good he is and he wants to be treated like coaches that deliver results. Based on absolutely nothing other than his focus on team and the contributions of his staff, he might be concerned how they have been valued and compensated. You had a basketball AD and not one that focused on football or treated the major sports equally. If I were Chesney I would think my Football Family was not as valued as the Hoops Family based on the ALLEGED spread in compensation between the two programs. If you accept that as the Chesney mindset, then the attention the new AD gives him before he joins or once on the payroll will go a long way in determining how he receives any new contract, the pay increases for the staff, and his future time at Holy Cross.
