We aren't their rivals any more You are not speaking for all alums We still play them in football, baseball and maybe other sports. We have played them in hoops more recently than 40 years. Hopefully hoops will be resumed

Not very familiar with St. Mary's (did we play them in football one year?) but someone enlighten me what they have that Holy Cross doesn't. I don't mean now because I know we need a new coach to win, but institutionally, what do they have that we don't? I am a little late to this thread, but one thing they had until a couple of years ago was a President who graduated from Holy Cross! My classmate, Jim Donahue, Holy Cross 1969, recently retired. I think that the entire West Coast Conference basketball story is a potential model for our Patriot League experience. The phenomenal success of Gonzaga has helped the entire conference over time. This year, both St Marys and San Francisco will likely be in the NCAA tourney, and other schools like Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount have also had good teams. I have come to accept that we will be in the Patriot League, and our mission should be to win it! Over time, there is no reason we cannot have some great success and bring the league along.

We are definitely not BC’s rival and they are not ours.

To some, maybe few, they will always be our rival. If not them, then who ? Is there any ? One in football ? Name ? One in hoops ? Not the same name, I presume.

HC really doesn't have a true rival per se
There used to be a SportsCenter ad showing a young couple making out on a couch, He was wearing a Michigan sweatshirt and she had on Ohio St attire. The tagline was "without sports, this wouldn't be disgusting". A fan would have to be about 50 years old or more to think of BC like that, and I don't think anyone younger feels like that about anybody

For me,(obviously well over 50), It is better to have had an old, fierce rivalry that has turned stale than to have none at all.

I’m not even sure the one BC rivalry is “stale,” hoops. It’s non-existent.

Rivalries exist in the eyes of the beholder.

I'd argue that it takes two to tango. Can there be a rivalry between two schools if no one on the other side views it as a rivalry?

If you go back to the last century, I'm not sure the Yankees considered the Red Sox rivals the way the Red Sox considered the Yankees rivals. When you have the upper hand in a very one sided rivalry, it can be hard to consider the perennial loser a rival. Back in 1999 during game 3 of the ALCS in which the Red Sox crushed the Yankees, Yogi Berra told the Yankees not to worry about it because they've been kicking these guys @$$es for hundred years

It actually looks like this team found a decent coach. Their tournament run notwithstanding, I think they probably exceeded most expectations this year. Earl Grant was a good choice. BC's got to hope he likes living in New England or they're back to square one. Quite a few decent coaches have gone through The Heights*; unfortunately, the last two were bad fits/did poorly there. Bad karma after dumping not-my-favorite-guy Al Skinner for no good reason. *"The Heights" is on their current set of jersies; unless you are an alum or live in Mass., that's kind of bogus, not exactly something that means anything to anyone.

Jay Bilas has become the new Billy Packer. Smug, know-it-all, smartest guy in the room - absolutely brutal.
Listening to him overanalyze every foul and play with contact makes me want to throw my clicker through the TV.

I believe the announcers in all four BB games between BU and HC brought up the "Turnpike Rivalry" and some appeared to think that game was for a trophy as I understood them. It must be one or more SID person from one or both schools that is feeding them that or putting it in the game notes or press guide. I don't have any problem getting annoyed by BU, as they have eleven times as many tuitions and fees to finance several less sports than us and don't support the PL in sports like football and baseball even though they can well afford to. But if that's OK with the PL it's certainly not cheating or anything. I wonder if the league requires them to financially support sports like baseball and football, even though they don't play them as a requirement to be full league members? I could see the merits in that.

There is an enormous difference between occasionally playing a former rival and having a real rivalry with said opponent. We don't have one in hoops and maybe we have one in football.

Attractive. And they are 15.8 miles from Providence if they ever need to use the Dunk for a big game. Colgate hosted the PLC championship game in a smaller arena and while it was full it didn't look like they had to turn anyone away.
