Wilbar was rostered for two years at Lincoln Memorial University, a D2 in Tennessee. Redshirted one year, then played 4.6 mpg in 2020-21. Then transferred to Indiana State for 2021-22, where he played 12 mpg.
It will be interesting to see: (a) if he is eligible to play this upcoming season; and (b) how many years of eligibility he has left. Under NCAA rules, a player who transfers a second time has to sit a year unless he gets a waiver from the NCAA. Also in theory he has three years of eligibility left, since 2020-21 didn't count for NCAA purposes. However to play three more years, he would have to use at least six years of eligibility - while under NCAA rules a player only gets five. Once again an NCAA waiver would be necessary.

Hope he does great for us but obviously not a ton to be excited about on paper.

Half Brazilian and fluent in Portuguese— maybe he can channel Oscar Schmidt for us.

As far as I can tell (based on his VC), Indiana St was the only school to offer after he transferred from Lincoln Memorial. Once he entered the portal after his year at Indiana St, doesn’t look like many schools (if any) were persuing him besides HC. He did start games for a school that is in a much better conference than the PL, so I guess there’s something to be said for that.

This news is underwhelming. From what's been posted here, it doesn't look like he'll raise the standard for our roster. I wish him well but my wishes aren't an elixir for success.

He must be a good student to get accepted. Which means he may not have more than two years of coursework before earning his degree after three full prior academic years. So if he has to sit this upcoming season, HC may get one year of service for two years of scholarship.
But he doesn't look too scrawny and he's entering his fourth year after HS, so he should be able to help in the front court when he does play.

This is what we were suppose to be excited about? Larry Bird came from Indiana State. The kid could play well in the PL.

Highlights from last year.
Alley oop opportunity with our (TBD) point guard. Feel good after watching the highlights. He seems quicker than Rabs.

From calling around to coaches from every school in the country or when players post things to promote themselves on Twitter? Wilbar didn’t even have a tweet about interest/an offer from HC, so of course there wouldn’t be any info about him on Verbal Commits. I don’t know if he had 1 offer or 100 offers, or if he can play, and neither does anyone else here, yet it looks like everyone has already written him off. Nelson inherited the following as his post options: Faw, Verbeek, Sandy <3 years later he now has: Gates, Louth, Kenny, Rabinovich, Lewis, and Wilbar If you can’t see a dramatic improvement from the first to the second group, you’re just a hater.

Here’s what I know: He went to a D2 school out of high school where he redshirted his first season and then played sparingly in his redshirt freshman season. His coach left to go to Indiana State, where he followed him. He played 12 mpg and averaged 3.7 ppg. His coached, based on this quote, pushed him out of Indiana State — “It's making sure he finds the right system. The way we play, with reading and reacting, some guys pick that up quick. Other guys take a while. Simon is in his third year in my system. We looked at it and felt maybe a new voice and system would benefit him," Schertz said. It’s hard to be excited.

Any suggestion that any decision by Coach Nelson was less than brilliant makes you a hater.

Any suggestion that any decision by Coach Nelson was less than brilliant makes you a hater. 1) That’s not what I said. B) If he is anywhere above our 4th big this year, he’s either a great addition or something went wrong with Gates, Louth, and Kenny. So our 4th big is 6’11 with D1 experience. 2.5 years ago we didn’t have a 4th big, and our 2nd & 3rd bigs were not D1 players. Only this crew could complain about that.

Isn’t this the exact same thing that Pitino said about Trey James, and people acted like Nelson shot their puppy when he supposedly didn’t offer him?

I think this crew is mostly concerned based on the available info that this player will not make us materially better and yet we are dedicating a scholarship to him for some number of years. Some of us were concerned that a coach in Nelson’s position would fill our open scholarships with the best available player from the clearance bin at the portal. That seems to be what is happening here though I would love it if Wilbar becomes a great player for us. There’s just nothing in his record to date that suggests he will. If he’s just going to take up a scholarship and play 8 mpg as our 4th big, I would have preferred we pass and fill the schollie with a more promising prospect next year.
