Not to sound like Debbie Downer, but I hope this is the last year at Polar Park for a while. It’s a terrible venue to try and watch a game. Anyone who attended last year’s game knows that the park is not set up to watch a football game. I spent the entire game standing in the concourse just so that I could see most of the field, albeit at quite a distance away. The parking is also extremely difficult and the tailgating options are almost nonexistent. It is a nice novelty, but I’m hoping it’s not an annual event in my opinion. I’d prefer we bring in some lights next year and schedule a night game at Fitton instead. Parking is quite a distance away? Where did you park? Fitton Field?

I have been impressed with the home crowd at football games. More students than we had back 12 years ago.
Did anyone ever find out about the mythical Cousy Cup?

I see a big push to purchase tickets across my email and on the HC site - will be interesting if attendance is disappointing

With how good the team is this year, I think we'd be pushing 8,000 or so for this game if it were at Fitton.
Given the later start time, the fact this game is as much of an event as it is football game, and the novelty of Polar Park (don't think it's worn off just yet, but agree with hc2020 that it's not long before it does), I'd project a sell-out.

No it has something to do with reducing the amount of time that students occupy the dorms, which I guess brings some costs down? It's not about them not being there that week, but something about how that week off then pushes winter break back a week or something. And second semester now starts super late, after MLK Day. They started this right after I left. When I was there, I loved normal Columbus Break -- we got a 4 day weekend whereas most schools only got 3. For whatever reason they gave us the Monday AND the Tuesday off. Holy Cross also never observed Labor Day, which would've normally been either the first or second Monday of classes. It's funny, even when it was only a 4 day weekend, EVERYONE left campus except for fall athletes (+hockey) and people who lived on the West Coast. I worked for the football team so I was there every year (we played Brown all four years and all four were shootouts) -- campus was dead but it was super relaxing and you got to spend time with people you normally wouldn't hang out with. Meanwhile, MLK Weekend, which was a 3-day weekend a couple weeks after our return from winter break back then, everyone stayed and partied. When I was a student, I remember classes ending typically on a Monday, Tue-Thu serving as study days and then finals running Friday to Friday (no Sunday exams). Seemed to be that way both in the fall and spring. I remember getting home maybe two weeks-ish prior to Christmas and returning right before MLK Day. We would then have about two weeks between the end of spring finals and graduation, which allowed ample time to take advantage of Cape Week if one preferred. In looking at the fall schedule of classes, and starting with accounting (first page in the schedule), I see Accounting 181, Financial Accounting, offered MWF, 2:00PM - 2:50 PM. Back in the day, Friday afternoon classes were a weekend killer.

What does Polar park hold if we sell out Thousands of people? Their website lists their football capacity as 9008. I imagine standing room would add to that.

I think it’s too bad the field isn’t laid out from the right field wall to the third baseline.. That would give the best seating for watching a football game.. lots of easy parking around the stadium, all within a 10 minute walk.. If you are looking for a good Place to sit , relax and have a nice meal after the game, I’d recommend Russo, at 65 Water street.. I’d think one would need a reservation, very good Italian food, and they make their own pasta in house.

IMHO a sellout will be a toughie given the opponent (no rivalry, no alums in Worcester to speak of, likely to lose by 50), the date (kids will likely be gone from campus beyond the fact they’re uninterested in watching us knock around Bucknell even if there was no fall break), not family weekend or homecoming, and the fact Polar Park is no longer a football novelty. I just don’t see 9-10K.
On the plus side I see enormous offensive and defensive success for HC in the game.

Bucknell is a fine school. Glad we play against them & other fine PL institutions. PL games are great on campus. As Polar Park is off campus, this game is a special event and should be marketed as such. Is Bucknell or any other PL game a special event? Is Bucknell a draw in Worcester? I admire Bucknell but I can't see a sellout. Possibly, scheduling games against other Mass. or NE schools might stir up more interest - Merrimack, the IL, UNH, URI, Maine... Maybe a CAA foe might bring in fans - Delaware, Villanova... In other words schedule teams which might have some sort of following or be of interest to our neighbors in Central Mass. Research the market. Then one could market this game as truly special. No doubt this idea could easily be picked apart but I'm trying to encourage more imagination in scheduling at this particular site. Peace.

Bryant might bring more fans to Polar. That way they can see the park and not feel disloyal to the Pawtucket Red Sox because they are attending a football game.
Even though the WooSox sweetheart stadium deal gives them the revenue from non-baseball events, not the park's owner, the city of Worcester

Agree Bryant would have the potential to draw better but remember, Rhode Islanders don't travel well. I mean, you have to go all the way up Rt. 146.

I hold it in high esteem. Having said that, my impression is that football is very unimportant there.

I checked last night. Almost all of the seats in the end zone (first base line) were open. All the Worcester wall and seats from home plate to left field were sold.

Naming their football stadium after a baseball pitcher is one hint of that. Hoping this is was written tongue and cheek... Mathewson was a star football, along with baseball obviously, player at Bucknell. And not only that he was a veteran of World War I who was severely injured during training with gas. He is by far Bucknell's most famous alum.
