I decided to give this its own thread.
This morning's weather models are not in agreement on when the rain ends on Saturday. The most accurate model, produced in Europe and called the European model, has the remnants of Nicole moving further west, with the heaviest rain over central New York State. By 10 AM on Saturday, the center of the low pressure is in New Brunswick. At 7 AM on Saturday, the last of the rain is between Worcester and Springfield. Total rainfall for Worcester is 1.5-2 inches.
The 'American' model, produced by the National Weather Service, also has the low pressure in New Brunswick, but steady rain is still falling in Worcester at 1 PM. As of 1 PM, 2.0-2.5 inches of rain has fallen in Worcester, with an additional 0.25 - 0.5 inches falling before it ends.
Hurricane Nicole is forecast to come ashore near Brevard County Florida as a minimal hurricane late Wednesday.

Thanks Phreek! Prayers that our friends in South Florida remain safe. I saw two different models this morning. The local news had the rain persisting through 3pm on Saturday (although not as heavy as earlier in the morning) while the Weather Channel was in agreement with the "American" model. I would like to think our coaching staff would have adjustments ready based on the forecast. It is also supposed to be windy, at least 10-20 with gusts of 25-30. I think we are all hoping the wet field and windy conditions benefit our run game, but we must be prepared in any case.

This will keep the "fair weather fans" away. Considering this is neither Fordham; a championship game already played; a Patriot League opponent; and Rhode Islanders consider a trip to Worcester like other people would think of a cross country trip, it is likely the attendance will be less than 2,000. The only "up factor" is it is Senior Day and the families of the soon-to-be grads will be there as will some old fogies who want to prove they can still sit through a soaking like the '66 Dartmouth game (and their unfortunate spouses).

Girls travel basketball starts this weekend and we drew a 2:30 start on Saturday so we’re out and will not have the opportunity to prove the weather-agnostic nature of our fandom.

92, no harm, no foul since I believe you are season ticket holders so I think your attendance counts whether you are there or not. But game the system and have your son come down from the mountaintop (OK, hilltop) and use your tickets instead of his student ticket.
The real question is how dedicated are the baseball tailgaters who never come into Fitton. What’s the over/under number for them? Might be zero if the field is soaking wet and they don’t permit anyone on the field. 😢

Clearly the affects of the rain, even if it stops (that forecast seems to think it will), will make tailgating verboten on the grass fields.
Hopefully, nothing so bad that the field is messed up as we (hopefully) need it in a couple weeks.
Is there a HS game there on Turkey Day?
Wind messes up passing more than moderate rain, IMHO.

My wife remembers that '66 soaker well enough to know she will never be there if there is even a "chance" of something like that happening again.  Might this be a blessing in disguise - you know, if some of the regular tailgaters find out there is actually football being played in a very nearby stadium at the same time as their scheduled tailgate?  |

His friends generally don’t care unless they have money on the game. Not sure why that is. |

Yes, wind definitely messes up passing more than rain, but it also depends if the kids today wear gloves (I remember, about 15 years ago, the discussion in the Boston media about Brady and gloves for both cold weather and wet conditions). I was at a high level high school game a few weeks ago featuring an undefeated team in a cool light rain and saw the teams combine for 6 fumbles. (at least 3 of which were on the snap/handoff). Heavy wind gusts and wet balls definitely benefit our balanced approach and ability to "ground and pound." |

This sounds like a "learning opportunity" for someone in the insurance industry to explain the concept of "risk" to his friends as I am sure your son knows all about this. This message sent to you by someone who sat for 25+ semester level exams to earn his CPCU, CLU and ChFC professional insurance & financial planning designations yet still bought multiple Powerball tickets and, somehow, somehow didn't win either $1.5 billion or $1.9 billion, a few tens of millions would have gone to Holy Cross! Very safe to assume that baseball, HoJo's, and Freshman field will all be closed. My 45 friend will be upset to learn that the garage will also likely be oversold. Last time all fields were closed, baseball people were allowed in the garage. If the rain clears, parking could be a challenge.
I am fortunate enough I can make a decision at 11:30

I think the faculty should get their cars out of the garage so that 45 doesn't need to call the Worcester police to enforce his reserved garage spot. At least the faculty that pressured the murder of our Crusader mascot!  |

You are either overestimating the amount of rain or underestimating the talents of the HC team that maintains the Fitton grass. Long ago TG told me the drainage on Fitton was outstanding.

Pretty much the entire 2009 season was played in driving rain -- including 3 games at Fitton. Field held up fine.

If Worcester gets a couple inches of rain Fri and Sat as predicted, the field might get dug up, but that would have no impact on a game 3 weeks from now. On the other hand, if a category 5 hurricane makes landfall in MA on Dec 1-2 and dumps 24 inches of rain and floods Mill Brook, who knows? It could happen On a related tangent, has anyone else noticed that the last few seasons, the field doesn't get dug up at all. The grass in the middle of the field looks as good at the end of the game as it does at kick-off. They're using some hearty variety of grass at Fitton now-a-days |

May need a little repair work on Sunday but definitely not at all worried about it being playable in three weeks. |

Sand base makes a big difference.
In the case of Fenway Park, they did something similar but because Fenway's part of the Back Bay, they actually rebuilt the field after installing a "tub" that prevents the water table from rising up. Before they did that, the clubhouses and dugouts often had seepage from below.
