PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS: Friday: Khal Stephen (So, RHP) vs. Nate Chudy (Sr, RHP) Saturday Game 1: Calvin Schapira (R-Sr, LHP) vs. Jack DiLauro (Sr, RHP) Saturday Game 2: CJ Backer (Jr, RHP) vs. Luke Fox (Sr, RHP) Sunday: Jonathan Blackwell (Jr, LHP) vs.Tyler Mudd (So, LHP)
Purdue's opening night starter will be a sophomore making his first career start. It looks like Stephen was a major contributor out of the bullpen his freshman year (led the team in appearances with 23), despite having a 8.29 ERA over 33.2 innings in relief with opponents hitting .287 against him.
I like the idea of throwing Chudy game 1 and having DiLauro and Fox take Saturday's games. Hopefully HC can give Purdue's athletic department a few more upsets this week.
Best of luck to Coach Kahovec and the team this year. Regardless of where we all stand on the state of HC Baseball, I've talked myself into starting the year with some optimism. I'm excited to see how the freshmen perform and if/how returning guys have improved since we saw them last.

Stephen as a freshman: lots of strikeouts, walks, hits, wild pitches , and hit batters.

Wondering where Sugarland, Texas is I googled. It's a suburb of Houston, is 38.24% Asian-American and has excellent schools. I wonder if between the Athletic Dept., Alumni Relations, Development and Admissions, HC can take advantage of being in the Houston area. Sugarland is the type of place HC seems determined to find future students from to combat the birth dearth reducing the number of college age kids in the Northeast as well as the decline of traditional Catholic feeder high schools. A couple of years ago a job listing for an HC coach opening was posted on Crossports. It included boilerplate verbiage that all departments at HC are expected to work together towards the common mission of the college, or something along that theme. A Texas barbecue reception before or after a game where players, their friends and family, alumni and prospective students and their families could mingle would be supportive of the baseball team and allow HC to make contact with their various constituencies. The daughter of a former neighbor went to Wellesley and then worked after graduation in the alumni/development dept. at MIT. She would go on these charm offenses for MIT and she said it was so much fun she couldn't believe she was getting paid to hobnob at parties. Congratulations to whoever scheduled this series, Purdue is a quality opponent. That would be a great approach for the new admissions and development team to do moving forward. I am unaware of previous efforts to do something similar outside of New England, and not sure it has happened in that region.

A quick check of the website reveals that the regional club in Houston is hosting an event tomorrow (Saturday) at a restaurant. I hope a development officer assigned to that region or the CAF rep attends. I agree that an event with the team would be great if it could be pulled off. www.alumni.holycross.edu/s/1380/15/index.aspx?sid=1380&gid=1&pgid=347

Back in the Paul Pearl days at HC when we had good hockey teams the alumni office scheduled a pregame reception at the Thayer Hotel which I attended - along with about 6 other people ! A total bust. Good ideas for a Houston reception but expectations have to be realistic

HC might not be in Texas again until January and that would be in the Dallas area.

Disagree on many fronts. We don’t need to cultivate relationships in Houston. We need to cultivate relationships in Worcester. Why we hosting a lunch in Texas when we can only get five alumni to come to our baseball dinner in Worcester? I doubt a guarantee is part of the Purdue series but possible. Game is not held in Purdue. Could be a large missed opportunity on ways to pay for our assistants. We want to recruit Asian-Americans from Houston? Maybe I’m missing something and disconnected from the mission. Very possible. Yeah, this is a despicable post. I am hopeful that it will be taken down. Happy to take down any post upon request. I support the notion you should be able to get a slightly more qualified applicant from regional and traditional sources where Holy Cross has a known value that has to be created by marketing in distant regions but the official college mission, as articulated by PVR as I understand it, is Holy Cross seeks diversification of it's traditional geographic and ethnic student body make up. I believe the college has stated they want to become a stronger national liberal arts college and is actively working to overcome the drop in Northeast college age students and the steady reduction in Catholic high school students. This area of Texas seems to fit that bill and I also like the idea of the different departments working together to promote the college mission. HC is a small school and as was seen with the poor turnout for the baseball kickoff event, if one department is working alone it may not have the same oomph as if multiple departments are coordinating.

I got a feeling hcbaseballalum was expressing an athletic bias, not anything else.
One could field a hell of a baseball team with Asian Americans, I'm 100% sure of; to boot.

I assumed hcbaseballalum has nothing against Asian Americans being recruited to HC whatsoever. It was more so asking if HC is really using money and resources to try and recruit Asian Americans from Houston (very niche) compared to other regions — I.e. wouldn’t HC’s efforts be better spent elsewhere?
I’ll allow him/her/they speak for themselves.

I was confused on why it as being said we’d pursue a niche demographic in a niche location and wondering if I missed something when it comes to Holy Cross recruiting efforts.

Have settled down a bit - 7-0 after 6 innings We have 4 hits - all by freshman With the current regime, unfortunately any freshman who is successful is going to be getting calls by other d1 coaches to transfer. They all know the dumpster fire that is HC baseball right now.

If we always worry about dollar💰💰💰💰 we never enjoy the moment
The Ivies and the PL can afford whatever they want but sometimes elitist pride gets in the way- make a call and the money will be there

I will say that EK has recruited some talented and athletic position players the past two years. The offense did not seem over matched today and they only struck out 4 times.
There are 4 freshman pitchers on the roster who did not pitch today. It will be interesting to see if they’ll be valuable contributors this season.
