I will say that EK has recruited some talented and athletic position players the past two years. The offense did not seem over matched today and they only struck out 4 times. There are 4 freshman pitchers on the roster who did not pitch today. It will be interesting to see if they’ll be valuable contributors this season. The small number of Ks also stood out to me. That is definitely a really good sign. I feel like we’ve K’d 10+ times in most season openers in recent memory (we actually struck out 20 times in the season opener @ Houston in 2018, a 3-2 win). Tomorrow is a big day. We have two of our best arms on the bump and a real opportunity to get in the win column early. In other news, our future opponent Seton Hall beat #12 UNC today.

Tough opener. 7 hits, 3 of which were in the 9th and I believe two others in the 6th when the game was out of hand. Doesn’t tell us much offensively. . Pitching wise, strikes were tough to come by. Chudy was barely above 50% strike to ball ratio. MLB average is 62%. That needs to improve for the team to have any success.

Believe Purdue’s game 1 starter tomorrow is their #1 pitcher, but he’s coming off Tommy John surgery, so innings may be limited

A few things of note:
-The reason we have a ton of freshman in the lineup is because we can’t retain players in our program. Through transfers, quitting, etc., the reason we have freshman in our lineup is out of necessity and nothing else.
-our team didn’t get on base once beyond hits. Zero walks and zero hbp. Very difficult to do in a baseball game in all honesty. Not a good sign offensively.
-To snappers point, we didn’t throw strikes. That’s foundational to spring an upset versus a team that’s not that good.
-finally, I was pleased to see our freshman catcher get two hits. This is the most important position in college baseball and we need someone to emerge here. With that said, Purdue stole 12 of 12 bases. Not a great sign without seeing him on video. Might be the pitchers fault but 12 of 12 is a tough start.

Purdue taking it to us again in game 1 of our doubleheader today.
Dilaruo got hit around.
Poor defense with multiple errors, wild pitches, passed balls, failed plays. This was our biggest issue last year. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.
Another three stolen bases through four innings.
Anybody know if Jimmy King will be in the mix this year? Played time at short stop last year and is a good fielder from what it seems. Doesn't seem like he is in the mix.

14-4 final in game 1. Let’s see if we can regroup and play competitive games in the back half of the weekend.

Now that’s the kind of performance we wanted to see! Congrats Crusaders and shoutout to Macchiarola for a well-earned save to start his career on the mound.

Former poster and ardent HC baseball fan (HC70) has been in Sugar Land, Texas for the games vs. Purdue this weekend. He reports that a number of newcomers are starting and look pretty good. Also reports that HC baseball will visit Hawaii to play the Rainbow Warriors in 2024.
