I can’t remember but are any of them Nelson recruits? All of them?

In a weird way, feels like we gave that game away after looking like we had no business in even having a chance. Very encouraging. Bo Williams Nugent Octave Louth The five that got us there. Interesting to see if this is who HCDP likes down the stretch going forward or if this was the group he was riding tonight. At least the team looked like it was being coached up. DP knows, I think, that success depends, among other things, on the early development of the freshmen. They look promising. None looked overwhelmed. Louth showed some nice flashes.

But no Rabs? Anyone know if he is still injured to some degree?
I do like what I saw with the freshmen, especially Nugent, and since he started, I guess so does DP.

HC seemed like a different team in the second half. To me, that is due to coaching and I like what I saw in that regard.

The development of Louth and Ryan are very important to the success of this team. I think one or the other will need to be on the floor for most of the game. Louth is a senior but this is essentially his sophomore year.

A year ago, we would have lost that game by 18, and HCBN would have touted the fact that we lost the second-half by less than we lost the first half as a positive that the team could build on.
Better days are certainly in our future.
Make the foul shots!!!!!

Tomorrow practice, all players will take 50 free throws, if we had hit them tonight we would have won the game. Not a bad idea but nothing like making them during the game with the bright lights on. As someone said once on the Providence board, he is a great 6 o’clock shooter.

Hopefully. the four recruits for ‘24-‘25 will sign their LOIs this week.

If they just shoot mediocre from the line they win. Frustrating, to be sure. Will be interested in seeing how the frosh shoot from the line as more games are played. I'm hoping that as he gets more comfortable Nugent can start taking it to the hole.
Now CDP is not keen on transfers, but - if there ever was a year to find a transfer big that could get plugged into the roster next year, ready to go, that would be the time. Very early, of course, but it looks like there is a really nice core on hand for the future.
Singleton and Williams just look like ballers out there. And I hoping that Louth can stay healthy, and build off his second half. 3 assists to 1 turnover; if I recall a couple of years ago (when he got some decent playing time) he was one of the only guys with a positive assist to TO ratio.

DP pointed out in the Capron interview that he had to re-recruit Nugent since Joe could have changed his mind upon the coaching change, I believe DP also said that Joe was the only one to have signed a LOI.before DP’s hiring.

I'm not sure that Siena is any good, and it's frustrating that the game was there for the taking. All that said... the talent level on the court, the level of preparation, the intentionality (for lack of a better word) at both ends of the floor... all looked light years better than any time in the last several years.
There's a light at the end of this 13-year tunnel, gang.

Thought I would share this Jen Tolland story of DP before the game. I especially like how he tells his basketball players about football QB, Joe Pesansky:

Did the T&G have anything today ? Just a blurb they must have picked up from AP or a stringer. I always assume there will be no story in the Telegram about an away game.

Frustrating but not all that surprising if you look at the career free throw % of our seniors. They aren't good free throw shooters and they took all 12 last night. I guess it's surprising in just how bad it was last night.

The game was a great opener for the team and Paulsen. The DP keys to success, which include foul shooting, proved to be true yet again.
The game provided more opportunities to teach, get better, and understand what it takes for them to win
Exciting season ahead

Morning after brain droppings. . .
- It's not who starts it's who finishes. Down the stretch was Coulibaly, Nugent, Montgomery, Octave, and Williams. I thought it was interesting the leading returning scorer from last season was not on the floor for most of the stretch
- Siena's big guy wasn't that skilled. Still it's asking a lot for Kenney to guard a guy 6" taller and 50 lbs heavier than he is. An athletic big man will cause big problems going forward. Pun semi-intended
- Coach Paulsen has a lot of confidence in Williams. He played most of the game and played well. The second time HC ran it's last play, it was set for Williams to run up the court and shoot. Frankly it hit glass and front of rim. Not a horrible shot given the time constraint.
- Got crushed on the boards in the first half. Better in the second half
- One of the things Coach Paulsen talked about at some point was made free throws. I think HC had about 4 attempts in the first half. On a related note, HC went the first 10 minutes of game without a 2 point field goal. You don't get to the line from beyond the arc. 50 percent for the game from 3 yesterday. That won't always be the case
- Like most freshmen, fouling is an issue. Nugent was one of the last starters to get a blow. But he had two fouls and that was the end of him for the first half. I think Singleton was 8th man in and picked up two fouls fairly quickly. My sense is that Singleton's foul trouble is the only reason Wills saw the floor last night
- First 10 minutes or so was pretty ugly offensively. Hot 3 shooting kept HC in the game. Way too many possessions ended without the ball somewhere near the basket. Turnovers, multiple shot clock violations, blocked shots. That got better as the game went on
- For one of the biggest guys on the team, Nugent took zero two point field goals.
- Down 8ish with about 4:00 to go. Team not only continued to battle but did so fairly well.
- Siena looked rattled down the stretch. HC did not.
- At one point in the closing minute, Siena needed 3 attempts to inbound the ball

Tomorrow practice, all players will take 50 free throws, if we had hit them tonight we would have won the game. Don't expect much improvement if it's Louth and Kenney going to the line, probably can throw Octave in there as well. Mechanics are poor and most likely, the man in charge, Nelson, Paulsen, Dean Smith, etc....is not going to be that much of a factor- they are going to stay poor. Bo's another story, shouldn't be missing 3 out of 4.

Playing time for Williams surprised me the most. We knew he would get time this year, but coming into the fall practice, I heard he was behind a few others. When a few were banged up, he got his chance, and as they say, opportunity accepted and met the challenge. He is a very good athlete.
It will be interesting to watch the starting/end of game line-ups and the rotations between now and Thanksgiving. There are many more scoring options available this year.
