12 total if you include OL from Yale Nick Gargiulo (grad year at South Carolina) who was second to last overall pick to the Broncos. Players are counted as FCS if they graduate from their respective FCS school and only play 1 grad transfer season. Ie Luke Newman would count.

Yep I would personally count him but some don’t since he played 2 seasons at Penn State. Chiefs definitely have a “type” for OL. All 3 very athletic, versatile (can play multiple positions) and smart kids.

Like with most things in life, don’t underestimate relationship capital here for our guys.
CJ - GM of the Chiefs Brett Veach is a childhood friend and grew up with Chesney. They are still very close.
Jalen - obviously Steve Smith’s evaluation played a role here. They basically guaranteed him at minimum a 17 week practice squad spot for the 2024 season which you don’t often see.
Ayir - HC connection to the G Men is well documented through class of 2005 WR Tim McDonnell. Grandson of Wellington Mara and has worked in the front office for the Giants for nearly 2 decades. He spent 2 years as a GA at Notre Dame on Charlie Weiss’ staff after graduating from HC.

Holy Cross WR Jalen Coker is signing with the Panthers for 25k signing bonus and 225k salary guarantee, per source. But that guarantee is solely depended upon Jalen making the team, correct ? Not from my understanding. A guarantee is a guarantee. If for some reason he were not to make the practice squad with the Panthers, they would be on the hook for his salary on the practice squad for another team in 2024. Again, this is as good a deal as you’re going to see for an undrafted free agent. A player on the practice squad for all 17 weeks in 2023 would have made 216k. CJ’s contract will likely be very similar, except with a ~50k higher signing bonus.

Steve Smith, former Panthers All-Pro receiver, was very high on Jalen in his pre-draft analysis. Not surprising that the Panthers signed him immediately after the draft was over.

Thank you for the explanation. I was just expanding what I had read about some player “guaranteed” contracts when the money depends on making the roster.

Thank you for the explanation. I was just expanding what I had read about some player “guaranteed” contracts when the money depends on making the roster. He will have incentives built in on whether he makes the 53 man active roster. For example, Liam Anderson made ~268k last year cause he was active the final couple weeks. He was on schedule for the 216k practice squad schedule before being called up. By way of comparison, Benton Whitley made ~519k in 2023 with the Vikings and Giants as he was active for a majority of the year. His 2024 contract with the Giants is for 985k if he makes the 53 Man the entire year. Money can really jump once you are active and past your rookie contract. Benton made 397k his rookie season because he was active about half of the year with both the Chiefs and Vikings. Liam’s contract for 2024 with the Colts is 795k if he makes the 53 man. Not sure of his minimum guarantee. If Jalen happens to make the active roster the entire season, my guess is he will make ~730k this year (roughly ~480k above his guarantee looking at how most of these types of premium rookie UDFA contracts work.)

One other potential connection here for Jalen -- although it's a bit of a reach -- is that Carolina's WR coach was the Titans' WR coach when Kalif played there. Blaise Bell also a scout for the Giants, so another strong connection.

It's pretty damn impressive the list of HC guys who have made the practice squad or better in recent years --
Chandler Fenner Kalif Raymond Jimmy Murray Benton Whitley Liam Anderson Ayir Asante Jalen Coker CJ Hanson
Have I missed anyone?

Looks right to me. Others with FA contracts (Dom and Pujals) and invited tryouts (Jon Smith and several others) but never made a practice squad.

Brett McDermott also close with the Colts. Recall he was one of the final cuts for the 53.

Also probably a bit too early to include Ayir in this list. He will have a bigger hill to climb in camp to make a practice squad compared to BW, Liam and Jalen as UDFAs.

Safe to say Jalen exceeded his NIL potential? A grad transfer year could have helped or hurt his earnings potential but "a bird in hand is worth two in the bush."
How do folks feel Sluka would have fared in this draft? I would have drafted him and given him a shot as returner and third QB at the beginning of camp. But I'm not a GM.

I would also add that with regards to CJ, Andy Reid and Andy Heck ( O Line coach ) are familiar with HC after bringing on Jimmy Murray

Perusing some KC sports media and it sounds like CJ will likely be on a 705k base rookie contract with 300-330k guaranteed for year 1. This includes what should be a 60k-90k signing bonus.
Same contract as Jalen just with 50-80k more guaranteed mostly through a higher signing bonus.

Presume these numbers are included in the average starting income of HC grads.

35% bracket per their guarantees. Will have to make the active roster for a good chunk of the season to blow through 519k which hits 37% for single filers.
