How true. Believe we've talked about the U-Haul guy who gives little or nothing. Not trying to single him out but just an example. I am not aware of any billionaire Classmates but there are guys that have made (note passive tense, we are almost all retired) lots of money and have substantial assets who don't give as much as you would like to alma mater. Maybe they'll leave it to Holy Cross after they've passed? Most everyone on this board obviously loves Holy Cross, and feels indebted to the education we received and the lifelong friendships we maintain. You don't have to be a billionaire to make a substantial gift. I am on the gift committee for the class of 69, which will be having our reunion next year. I have found that many of my classmates don't realize how important their contributions are, and how valuable they are to achieving our goals. I can tell you that even alums with modest means, can make a substantial and impactful gift as a bequest in their will, or as a donation overtime from their IRA. We are encouraging our classmates to do just that as a part of our 55th reunion. Looking for the great big sugar daddy is not a winning strategy by itself.

Back to the matter at hand in regard conflicts and other serious issues presented within the funding and donations provided by large donors (corporations, organizations, governmental agencies, NGOs, public and private foundations).
Who is minding the store at Harvard in this regard? When might the Members of the Harvard Corporation including our own fellow Crusader alum Mr. Wells be seriously challenged on this topic?
How might we ever know if Holy Cross has accepted funds that present serious conflicts as well? Are we simply supposed to put blind trust and faith in the BOT when there is NO transparency on this front? Really?
In regard to Harvard, this passage seems particularly applicable in light of past longstanding relationships and both prior and present developments:
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Matthew 18:6 I receive a report every year from the Holy cross Fund that details the money raised, and lists contributors at every level.
td, have you noticed gaps in that report, or omissions, with funds that are unaccounted for? What is the "transparency" that you are looking for?

I am perplexed. Our coach seems to be well regarded nationally, as evidenced by her coaching the US Junior National Team, and yet . . .
A lot of time has gone by without much to show.

Michigan also got away with holding (clearly grabbing uniform jerseys on the replays) on almost every play. One might have almost thought the officials had some money on the game. Michigan is an outstanding team, but IMHO they did have some zebra help early in the game when they got off to their early lead. The holding WAS outrageous! Having said that, Michigan was otherwise phenomenal on both sides of the ball last night. Washington had few answers to their running game, their O lone was incredible, and they hounded Michael Penix all night long.

This is classy. Morris is staying with his team through the post season bowl matchups, even as a backup, before leaving for JMU. Speaks well of him and the program. Quite a contrast to the Florida State players!

I am just a casual Bowl game watcher, but yesterday drew me in. I have to say, both of the games were off the charts great matchups. Michigan had a complete game and looked solid against Alabama. Washington - Texas may have been a little late for you East Coast guys to stick with, but the Huskies also played at a consistent, high level. Both games went down to the final play. The Washington QB was unbelievably mobile in the pocket while being accurate on those long throws, time after time. The game next Monday night should be a heck of a tilt.

Love everything Matt has done at and for Holy Cross (perhaps excepting stepping out of bounds in Alumni Stadium and and interception or two) but my sense of fair play screams that I don't want him back next season for Joe Pesansky's sake. Joe deserves his time under center as the #1 guy. He's paid his dues. Besides, I'd love for Matt to show what he can do on a larger stage which will reflect back well on Holy Cross. I believe that Joe P has proven himself, and that he deserves to be our guy going forward next season.

Fascinating! He was only 5-8, 165lb. A different era! It says he played in four games, but does not say for what team. Does anybody know about that?

Watching Ohio State-Missouri and The Ohio State University can't do anything on offense, mainly just running plays because their starting QB is not playing and is transferring to Syracuse. Anyone know the reason he is leaving TOSU? I don't get it; he led them to victory over ND! Rumor was that he asked for assurances regarding starting next year (in light of the Michigan loss and some other criticism he received) and asked for additional NIL dollars. He got neither. Word is Syracuse offered both. There was some surprise that the guy who only lost one game (and it was by 6 to top-ranked Michigan at Michigan) would drop all the way down to Syracuse but that’s another story. "drop all the way down to Syracuse"? I don't thin k that is an accurate assessment. The Orange have been raking high quality transfers under their new coach, and some key players who had initially entered the portal have now said they are coming back. I expect they will be a powerhouse this coming season. Just our luck.

I watched Coach Dan Curran's press conference, and I couldn't be happier. He said everything I was hoping for, and more. He is confident, articulate and knows what he is talking about. He gets us and that is huge. The only thing that I don't understand, in view of everything he said about Holy Cross, is why did he go to UNH instead of HC? He had Pete Vaas in his living room, for crying' out loud! Anyway, I am glad we have him now.

LOL....Montana is a little different than the Dakota schools....little more character/interesting etc.... No real desire to go to the Fargo Dome or Brookings again,,,,but Missoula would be a destination game imo How many HC alums would even think of making a trip to Missoula, Montana? I would set the over/under at 50 people? Don't forget - some HC alums live in the West! We would love a game in the Northwest! I would go for sure and stay with my sister's family in Missoula! Maybe combine the trip with some fly fishing! Holy Cross is a national school and we need to avoid having a solely provincial, New England focus.

I learned from my studies in psychology that all belief is ultimately voluntary. Each of us truly believes only what he/she chooses to believe. Each of us has a different path through this life and different reasons for our choices. So, in short, I respect whatever choice people make in practicing their religion/faith. Heck, I have even served (with my wife) as a Unitarian minister on Star Island and am an extraordinary eucharistic minister in our Catholic parish. I hope that for each of you that your choices about the practice of faith bring you whatever answers you may be seeking in this world. May this time of year strengthen your faith and may it help you to be there for others. Merry Christmas! I agree. Faith is not something that descends upon you. Not some thing that you wait for. Rather, it is an action that you take. I like to think of it as a verb, and not a noun.

A very good article, IMO. He has the same misgivings that many do.
"he didn’t agree with the hardline positions he heard later as an adult from Catholic leaders against rights for women, gays and people who might not fit neatly into the categories they seemed to believe were essential to a moral life." "He eventually stepped back from the church and he no longer practices his faith in a traditional way, but he supports Catholic immigration and educational ministries. He also credits the Jesuits with instilling in him an intellectual honesty and a sense of compassion for the marginalized. He wonders how history might have looked had more church leaders lived out those values in the public square during the height of the AIDS crisis."

Agree whole heartedly and why my preference is a coach like BC who has a dynamic, charismatic personality besides football knowledge in order to attract and retain top player talent. One of my Classmates joked with me that maybe Belichick might be available for our open position. Whether you think he’s a football genius or lived off of Brady’s talent, for me, he’s exactly what we don’t want. He’s probably not the kind of guy you’d want to have a beer with . . . . . unless he’s offering you a multi-million dollar contract. My vote is for Chris Smith who knows Holy Cross as alum and relatively long time Crusader assistant coach and really seems to know not only football but what makes our players tick. “Smitty” seems to be well liked and, more importantly, well respected, by the current players which would likely be exportable to new recruits. JMO. The obvious rub against Chris Smith is that he has no head coaching experience. I think the main deficit that engenders is in having no experience managing a large staff and all of the administrative work responsibility that goes into being a head coach. Fortunately, Chris has the benefit of an outstanding liberal arts education, and that means he knows how to learn!

Saddening to hear - local Catholic colleges should look to hell the student body transfer. Unfortunately, I doubt HC has the capacity to absorb additional transfer students at the moment. Holy Cross should take the entire Women's Soccer team...they would contend for a Patriot League title next year if they did. No kidding. They have some graduate student team members who would not be eligible, however. We should also consider hiring their coach, Laurie Darling! gogoldenknights.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/coaches/laurie-darling-gutheil/2599

Pasted below is what I wrote in September on the topic of Delaware going to FBS: If Delaware leaves the CAA for greener pastures, I think the following will happen: 1) Nova is going to take a closer look at their football affiliation with the CAA. 2) Unlike what other posters think, I strongly believe they will NOT follow Delaware and make the move to FBS. 3) Nova will “look at the board” and realize that their real peers in football (after Delaware leaving for FBS) should be W&M and Richmond. 4) I believe that Nova will then “back channel” with those two schools. 5) Once they’ve conferred, all 3 will approach the PL and discuss the possibility of a merger (under certain conditions, such as allowing non medical redshirts) 6) I think the PL will be pressured by Fordham and HC to agree to most of the demands from “the Big 3.” 7) The big 3 will agree to join the PL. Georgetown will exit stage right (probably will head to Pioneer) and Bucknell will be told to “step up and adapt” or look for a new conference. 8) We pop the champagne and celebrate this wonderful new version of the PL! From your mouth to Gods ears!

Duke is open now and like Syracuse is a basketball school. It is, however, a much better fit for Chesney I wouldn't call Syracuse a basketball school. They have won national championships in football and lacrosse, in addition to basketball.
