Soooo, when I initially wrote my prior post, I had "couldn't have been written by either a Holy Cross or BC grad as either would know this was incorrect" but then thought the better of it as those of us of a certain age likely took Latin and knew the correct usage. I then thought the better of it realizing that most here did NOT take Latin and would not realize the mistake. I hate to date myself but am proud to say that I was the only one in my high school class to pass the Latin NY State Regents exam (I went to a Franciscan High School, so that's our excuse. ). I also had the benefit of being an altar boy when the Mass was strictly in Latin and had to memorize all the prayers and had a father who explained to my older brother and me what the English translations were. I do think whether one took Latin or not, especially Holy Cross alums (see what I did there?), they should know the difference between alumna/ae and alumnus/i. So, thank you Chu! Introibo ad altare Dei . . . Being an altar boy really did help with Latin!

Very sad day for Boston. However, “alumnae?” Really? According to online Mirriam-Webster, as sader1970 obviously is aware, "For an individual graduate, an alumnus is a single male, an alumna is a single female, and an alum is the gender neutral term. For the plurals, alumni refers to multiple male or gender neutral graduates, alumnae is for multiple female grads, and alums is the gender neutral plural. These terms are often used loosely and their strict definitions are in flux." It seems obvious to me that the article was written by a BC grad.

Chesney shared that mother told him to find happiness where he is at in the present (paraphrasing) so there is no indication he has a single minded desire to coach at the highest level. Wouldn't blame him if he left for a better paying job with a higher profile and ceiling, but nobody has articulated the value of Holy Cross better than Coach Chesbey when he says "You can have it all at Holy Cross." You can't not win the league and make the FCS playoffs. This is demonstrably not true. Both Fordham and Holy Cross were in last year!

My hope is that no one from Holy Cross ever goes to Syracuse. That includes players, coaches, regular students going to grad school. I've lived in many places over my career and Syracuse was by far the worst, The weather was the worst. The people are distant (they make New Englanders look warm and fuzzy by comparison). In fairness, the weather may be a main contributing factor as I learned what the term "cabin fever" meant. You don't see your neighbors for months. You'd think that would make them friendlier . . . . it doesn't. The Orange fans, wherever they come from, are the worst. Ironically when the locals blamed "Long Islanders and New York City students" for the bad behavior, I chuckled to myself because that's where I'm from and no one that I knew growing up was as badly behaved as these people were. Now, to be certain, not every person there was distant or nasty and some/many were very nice. But compared to other places that I've lived around the country, the percentage was smaller and it just wasn't the best place to live. This seems more than a little hyperbolic, sader1970. I grew up there, though high school, and I was very happy to return there after Holy Cross, for grad school and then medical school. I still have family and friends who call the Great Salt City" home. I will grant you that it does snow (a lot), but nothing else that you have written seems right to me. It was a great community to grow up in. The last couple of decades have been tough ones there, as they have for many other mid-sized cities in the Northeast, who have gone through the severe dislocation of jobs to low wage economies, but I have always found the people to be wonderful and welcoming. I think maybe you have the less well known form of PTSD (Post Traumatic Snow Disorder).

Looking forward to seeing Kalif on Thanksgiving! This will be the first time in my life that I have any interest in the tradition of watching Detroit on Thanksgiving day.

This Grasso character definitely has some issues - here is a 30 minute bodycam video from the officer that visited Grasso's home after the 'hit and run' accident. He's very defensive and seems to change his story at the end when his wife gets involved - you'll have to wait until the 4th minute here to see Grasso at his front door Wow, what a blizzard of bull#@*&$~!. This guy sure could have profited by some female supervision much earlier in that interview.

Gutsy game, Crusaders! Lots to be proud of! We had more rushing yards, more time of possession, more passing, yards, and fewer penalties. A big difference was those crucial turnovers when it hurt us the most ..

The last time we played Army, I was inducted into the CrossSports Hall of Fame for being the only person who predicted a Holy Cross win.
I do so again. Sluka and Dobbs are ready to go. Let's make it two in a row!

I know it's not part of the official process, but I have to believe if we beat Army and then beat Georgetown to close out the season, that we will get a bid, even if we are tied for the league lead. The selection committee wants the best teams, and a signature win over an FBS team like Army on Veterans Day will be hard for them to overlook. I am experiencing subdued excitement.

It seems to me that the primary benefits of doing this kind of thing are not simply reputational for the school, but instead, provide valuable access and real world experience for students. I imagine that it also serves to attract excellent faculty in statistics and political science departments. In addition, I will bet that the Siena College Polling Institute makes money, and there is nothing wrong with an "A-plus pollster rating from FiveThirtyEight". They are considered the gold standard.

Endowment value as of June 30, 2023 was $1.043 billion, an increase of $50 million, or 5 percent. The five percent increase in value outperforms many/most of the private institution endowments in the $1 billion category for fiscal year 2023, including a school in Chestnut Hill. More later, when I'm not killing time in airport lounges. As I recall, this is a lot better than we have done in previous years. It is also notable that we appear to have done better than other institutions. I don't remember that being the case in the past. I seem to recall that we have had a change in investment advisors recently, and I wonder if these changes reflect that. Anyway, good news!

Got a call from Kaitlyn Flanagan, a sophomore on the team, and I will be bringing my daughters, aged four and two, to cheer on the Crusaders in Chestnut Hill on Monday. I do appreciate the effort the athletes make to call and thank donors. The personal touch is noted. I agree! I got a call from Janie Bachman. I've also heard from women's soccer and hockey players. Do the men do anything similar? I haven't heard anything from them myself.
