Adam Kinzinger is also on the committee, so no, she's not the only Republican. And in case you missed it, there were three other Republicans accepted by Pelosi but McCarthy thought it'd be more strategic to withdraw entirely so that he could feed people the line that it's too partisan (which you've clearly gobbled up). What's so pathetic is that no matter what Trump is found to have done, long-standing conservatives like Cheney and Kinzinger are ostracized because they have the courage to actually stand up for their convictions and say publicly what their GOP colleagues will only say privately. Yes, Adam Kitzinger, another longtime Trump critic handpicked by Pelosi, is on the committee (he announced he’s quitting Congress in November). If Pelosi had accepted the original 5 (none long-standing Trump critics) offered by McCarthy it would have helped her overcome the Trump Russia Collusion Hoax baggage AND gain some credibility for the committee. But, she didn’t want those five. I can't tell if you're being deliberately obtuse or just incapable of comprehending, but she only rejected two because they were SUBJECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION. Should a judge be allowed to preside over their own corruption trial? Of course not. Even thought Cheney and Kinzinger don't "count" as republicans for Trump/hcpride because they have the audacity to think for themselves, does it matter to you that nearly every witness, including those who've described Trump's efforts to delay the counting and "find" more votes in spite of there being no evidence of fraud, are Republicans as well? Bill Barr doesn't count? The Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania Speakers of the House don't count? So for you, anyone who criticizes Trump, or even just testifies honestly under oath about illegal things that Trump did, isn't really a Republican and is not to be taken seriously. You're really telling on yourself here, dude.

Are you even watching? Cheney (who voted with Trump 97% of the time) is doing much of the questioning. To quote her: "why do you continue to defend the indefensible". She’s a known harsh critic of Trump, handpicked by Pelosi to be the only Republican on the panel, and willingly completes all tasks assigned by the Democratic Chairman. Beyond the one-sided nature of the show there is another obvious credibility issue. If the very same crew (Dems and their Media) had not engineered the Trump Russia Collusion hoax there might be more folks buying impeachment three (four?). I mean, who would take Jussie Smollet seriously when he reports another racial attack by the same folks he blamed for the first one? Adam Kinzinger is also on the committee, so no, she's not the only Republican. And in case you missed it, there were three other Republicans accepted by Pelosi but McCarthy thought it'd be more strategic to withdraw entirely so that he could feed people the line that it's too partisan (which you've clearly gobbled up). What's so pathetic is that no matter what Trump is found to have done, long-standing conservatives like Cheney and Kinzinger are ostracized because they have the courage to actually stand up for their convictions and say publicly what their GOP colleagues will only say privately.

Just made a donation to Nativity in memory of Father Hart. Their recognition and thanks were almost immediate: "Thank You On behalf of the entire Nativity School of Worcester community, thank you for your generous donation! Receiving your support makes a meaningful impact on the lives of our students, graduates, and faculty. We could not provide a transformative Jesuit education without friends like you! With Gratitude, The Nativity Worcester Community" I hope other Crusaders will join the Nativity Worcester Community in this contemporary "Crusade!" Just made one in honor of the good bishop himself and added an email acknowledgment thanking him for raising awareness of Nativity's admirable values.

What astounding hypocrisy. And an entirely predictable and cowardly avoidance of it when called out on it.
Not to mention a perfect encapsulation of why your church is dying.

Unless you're a poor woman living in one of the backwards states. Or a victim of rape or incest. Or a child who was born into a dangerous or inhospitable environment because their mother wasn't given a choice. But hey, they're not your problem. No biggee. It is quite a dilemma for the Uber - liberal Catholics. So much for the intersectionality theorists. What's sad is that you have no dilemma with regard to forcing a mother to give birth to a child that she can't afford and/or care for while also opposing any government assistance to ensure the mother or child's well-being. Pro-life my ass.

Or even having to carry to term when the fetus isn't viable to live or could hurt the mother with an ectopic pregnancy...? This returns those issues to the states. No biggee. Or a child who was born into a dangerous or inhospitable environment because their mother wasn't given a choice. But hey, they're not your problem. No biggee.

As graduates of a Catholic school and as Catholics we rejoice that the Supreme Court chooses life. (And returns abortion to the states to decide). An awkward spot for Uber- liberal Catholics. After rejoicing, I'm sure you'll also be fighting hard to ensure that those families whose mothers are forced to carry to term (even in cases of rape and incest) also have access to the necessary food, education, and healthcare welfare benefits that are necessary to ensure that they don't needlessly suffer as they grow. "Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don't want to know about you. They don't want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fu--ed.”

What kills me is that his basis for rejecting these rulings is that he essentially considers due process to be a judicial fiction. The sad irony, which I'm sure he'll find some loophole around, is that his own marriage is protected by a SCOTUS ruling that found laws against interracial marriage to be a violation of the due process clause. So it would logically follow that he should rule in favor of allowing states to ban interracial marriage.
Maybe he doesn't want to be married to an insurrectionist after all.

Where are those decisions by Thomas on contraception, homosexual activity and gay marriage? I am asking seriously, not rhetorically. Today's SC decision seems to overturn Roe based on the shoddy work that was done in initially trying to find a "right" that was being violated (where none actually existed) when it was decided. The decision today (and I have only had time to read summaries and not yet the entire decision) seems to set aside a bad ruling by a previous group of SC judges and gives to states the right to establish their own standards in this regard. Remember NY Has already passed virtually unlimited abortion rights and even protects doctors who terminate the life of a child after a failed abortion attempt. I still remember the standing ovation in the state legislature when it approved this infanticide ruling. PS: If this is too political, then by all means feel free to remove this post (and any others that cross the "political" line. From his separate opinion (that none of the other conservative justices joined in on, which shows how absolutely batsh-- insane it is): “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold [protects contraceptive rights for married couples], Lawrence [prohibits laws against consensual gay sex], and Obergefell [established a Constitutional right to same-sex marriage].” Thomas also dissented on the original Lawrence and Obergefell rulings.

Given his now on-the-record opinion that states should be allowed to outlaw contraception, homosexual activity, and gay marriage, I think I know exactly who Thomas really is.

My bad, I forgot we're supposed to overlook wrongdoings if they're committed by Crusaders (or conservatives/seditionists). You must be very critical of Dr. F then. I'm less critical of scientists who get things wrong due to a lack of data than I am of Supreme Court justices who submit rulings on the basis of protecting their treasonous spouses, or sexually harass female employees on their staff.

Always hilarious to be accused of condescension by someone who just called me "pathetically disgusting." Keep the hypocrisy coming, KY, it's your stock-in-trade after all.

Seems like a really nice guy. Shame that his blatant bias and lack of ethics remain a blight on the SCOTUS. The competition for the most pathetically disgusting post of the year is over. We have a winner. My bad, I forgot we're supposed to overlook wrongdoings if they're committed by Crusaders (or conservatives/seditionists).

This was troubling... "Another edict: Mass, sacraments and sacramentals are no longer permitted to be celebrated on Nativity School premises or be sponsored by Nativity School in any church building or chapel within the Diocese of Worcester. The Nativity School, which traditionally does not receive funding from the diocese, said it will continue to display the flags in question." Is the school now considered "evil" ground (as opposed to "sacred ground")? That ban on sacraments and even sacramentals seems absurd in the extreme. I applaud the school's decision to appeal and hope that there are still some rational minds left in the Church....who can see the risk of damage that such an edict poses. Even my cynical ass can acknowledge that there are surely some rational minds left in the Church. Whether there are any in positions to influence its direction, however....

Really interesting analysis by the WaPo on Russia's logistical struggles. It's a long read (not sure if it's behind a paywall or not), but it breaks down their problems into some key areas: - Inadequate protection of supply convoys
- Scattered command, poor communication
- Shortages of food, water and fuel
- Questionable medical care
- Low supplies of guided missiles
- Excessive vehicle breakdowns
Combine all those things together and you have to figure that it also takes a massive toll on the morale and fighting spirit of Russian troops, most of whom probably believed the state's propaganda about how they'd be welcomed as long-lost comrades and had no idea that they'd be hunkering down for a long slog and carrying out atrocities against civilian population centers.

clmets. How would they feel about the slaughter of thousands of Ukrainians and massive destruction Ukrainian cities inflicted by their military? Thanks for your insights. Prior to this, I imagine that they'd have touted the typical RT propaganda line of Ukraine really being part of Russia and that Ukrainians would ultimately welcome reunification. Now, I certainly hope that they'd be disillusioned with Putin's actions, but you never know. Based on what we've seen from our own citizens, people who value "strongman" leaders and outward boasts of nationalist strength are typically resistent to believe any facts that might lead to disabuse of those feelings.

Maybe, this comment is an oversimplification. At one time didn't Russians trumpet Moscow as the third capital of Christendom - Rome, & Constantinople & Moscow? Historically,Russia has "looked West" then reverted back to its Eastern identity. Over the centuries prior to 1917Russia repelled invaders but conquered its neighbors to establish the Russian Empire. Since the Bolshevik Revolution Russia expanded its control behind an Iron Curtain. Then the wall came down and seemingly everything was thought to have changed. In the '90's, naively perhaps, I was hopeful a continuing rapprochement with the West would lead to a fuller integration of Russia with the West. However, as Russians opted for autocracy instead of democracy my hopes were dashed. At that time there were numerous articles about the large number of "conservative" Russians (not US conservative) especially among the elderly who preferred strong autocratic rule to provide a safety net (ex.pensions) and protection. Simply put the ideals of Jeffersonian Democracy have not been adopted by millions of Russians.Any attempt to understand Russians through western eyes fails to understand the dynamics of Russia. This latest invasion of Ukraine ends any hope for sustained good relations for the foreseeable future. Russia continues to be an outlaw country, a pariah led by Putin, another Russian criminal ruler in a long line of war criminals. An additional point. Some friends have stated their belief that Russia's invasion & attempted takeover of Ukraine was motivated by a perceived need for protection from western invaders. Ukraine would provide a buffer zone to protect Russia. Also other eastern Euro nations under Russian control would provide a buffer zone. They point to the numerous invasions from the West to support their view. It's perfectly understandable to have this view but I think there is more. Ukraine is different. I think Russia's attack was an attempt to fulfill what they consider Russia's Manifest Destiny(Russian style). They believe it is Russia's destiny to absorb Ukraine as its own. Putin's statements for many years gives credence to his belief and no doubt the belief of others that Ukraine is destined to be Russia. In my view this theory of Russian Manifest Destiny is of far greater long term significance. It's literally in their DNA. I have a few Russian acquaintances (mostly friends of friends) who, in the past few years prior to the invasion, have lauded Putin because they believe that he projected strength and made Russia an intimidating force on the world stage. When I challenged them with the facts of his autocratic tendencies and megolomania, they made it clear that those are secondary to the first priority of regaining the international power that Russia lost with the fall of the Soviet Union. I haven't seen any of them since the pandemic began, but I'm very curious about how they feel now that most of that Russian strength has proven to be a complete facade and its army woefully unprepared and ill-equipped to carry out a major operation.

Not really--one was clearly much more destructive to our country I agree. Collusion with a hostile foreign power, as has been confirmed by Republican-led Senate committees, is much more destructive than a stolen election plot that only exists in the minds of people addled with Facebook Brain. It's just a shame that the wife of a sitting SCOTUS justice is one of those people, and a bigger shame that he refuses to acknowledge his conflict of interest. www.nytimes.com/2020/08/18/us/politics/senate-intelligence-russian-interference-report.html
