What does this CTE research prove without a control group? There are many many factors that contribute to people developing cognitive issues. Unless they are comparing CTE football brains with brains of folks with depression, ALS, Alzheimer's, dementia, etc. who did NOT play football how can you really draw any conclusions? What makes you think that this research is being done without control groups?

I'm surprised there's anyone who doesn't believe stuff like this (along with plying recruits with girls) doesn't happen at every major college athletic program.

I don't think the decline in boxing's popularity as a spectator sport has anything to do with the health risks. I think it's a combination of too many sanctioning bodies leading to multiple "champions" at every weight class and the belief that it's rigged at the upper levels Eh, I agree that the new awareness of CTE and concussions hasn't had much of an effect because boxing has been a niche sport for much longer than that, but I think a big part of boxing's decline was based on more and more people thinking that it's simply barbaric to watch two people pummel each other for sport. I suppose "health risks" are part of that, but now we're just talking semantics.

That is not a strong comparison. How would the NFL owners deal with a popularity similar to boxing ? What I was trying to convey was that if boxing has not been banned, after calls for its demise for 100+ years, then football--safer and exponentially more popular--will not be banned for safety considerations in my opinion. I wasn't saying that football will be banned, merely that its popularity will plummet because fewer and fewer people will play it. In that sense, boxing is a good comparison. However, we're also talking about an individual sport vs. a team sport. You only need two people to have a boxing match, so it can survive as a fringe sport for a long time. But given the amount of people you need to have a single football game -- let along an entire league -- it won't survive if enough people refuse to play.

I think they just wanted to cut ties before he could blame this scandal on 9/11 too.

Is this the beginning of the end of organized football ? $95mm Luth ? If it does turn out to be a reliable diagnosis tool, then my best-guess answer to your question is yes. You already have the horror stories of players like Junior Seau and Rashaan Salaam committing suicide, guys like Chris Borland and John Urschel retiring young, retired players like Cris Carter saying that they're terrified of what might happen to them in the years to come. I've spoken to friends who played in high school and college that are concerned that they might have CTE. I haven't seen hard figures, but I have to believe that the number of parents who are willing to let their kids play football has to be plummeting (I don't have children, but I know that if I ever do, I'll do everything in my power to keep them away from the sport). The correlation already exists, but the hard evidence is still missing. This could be it.

I hate stories like this. I'm usually always up for some Bobby Knight bashing, as the guy is a blowhard and a bully, but there's no need to report on an investigation that happened years ago and resulted in no charges being filed.

I think changing the mascot and newspaper name is going a little overboard, but I just can't bring myself to care all that much. Ultimately it's a meaningless issue (and I say that as a former EIC of The Crusader).
However, I will say how disappointed I am in the amount of survey responses that basically just said 'Because it's tradition,' which by itself is a really poor justification for continuing to do anything.

Fantastic-thanks for bringing this to our attention-a great read. I've copied one story below that I think is particularly telling about the man: Fred Claire (Former Dodgers PR director and GM): "I can remember I had just started with the Dodgers, and there was this young guy who was just starting with the radio station. He wanted to interview Vin. I'll never forget this. So he came in, and Vin said, 'Sure, I'll do it.' And so the young man hit the recorder and talked to Vinny. Vinny spent at least 40 minutes with him. The young man came back to me, and ... he's shaking. He said, 'Fred, I didn't hit the right button. The recorder didn't work' -- literally in tears. So he said, 'Could I just have a few more minutes?' And so I went to Vinny and explained what happened. It's a young guy interested in announcing. And Vinny said, 'Let's do it again. Let's do it again.' I don't know anyone else who would do that. 'Let's do it again.' Think about that. That has to do with his compassion, his humanity and something that's part of his grace and his memory of a young announcer starting out himself who got a helping hand."That's the same passage that I read aloud to my girlfriend after his last game at Dodgers Stadium this week.

I only want to go if the Gianrs are playing Even less incentive for me then. Imagine going through all of the hassle and cost of going to a game only to have it turn out like SB XXXV against the Ravens. I remember listening to Francesa's SB trivia contest leading up to XLII against the 18-0 Pats and thinking that even if I were to call in and win, I would just want to sell the tickets. I was so sure we were going to get our asses handed to us that the idea of flying out to Arizona and suffering through it in person would be unbearable. Even with the miraculous win, I'm still glad I didn't go. Football on TV >>>>>> Football in person

HC's discussions with HE are much further along than this article implies. Makes sense. Why else would the hockey rink be the only thing that's not going to be upgraded in the Hart renovation?

Speaking to some ex-classmates-turned-HC employees, it seems that the Crusader is not dead, despite the fact that the domain was mismanaged and allowed to expire. That being said, it sounds like the paper remains on life support the way it's been for the past few years.

View from my apartment in Long Island City last night. 15 years and it still gets me right in the gut when I stop to contemplate everything that we all went through that day and in the weeks to follow.

I'm going to check with my friends still working on campus to confirm, but if true, this is very upsetting news.
Quick story -- when I took over one of the EIC positions my junior year, I learned that the paper was in deep debt due to a lack of advertising revenue, and ready to be completely shut down if we didn't turn things around. After a two-week hiatus, we implemented a huge increase in outreach for ad sales, scaled the paper back from 28 pages to 20, and removed all color printing, we were able to start printing again. The result was, I believe, a more efficient content flow and better overall design (I actually prefer B&W to color in printed newspapers).
Ten years later, if the paper is now kaput because it was allowed to wither and die on the vine, I'm going to be pretty pissed.
