People forget that this team just isn't very talented. Objectively look at the roster, folks. We have no junior class and one senior that has been consistently solid all season. That is difficult to overcome. I don't think the talent excuse flies when you lose to a LaughU team that was 5-17 heading into tonight's game. If Carmody is as great as people claim, he should be getting a lot more out of this group.

The team looks tired...maybe it's all the minutes played this season.. Maybe already posted, no Monday night game away team has won a Wednesday game this season, think I read this somewhere

We shouldn't totally forget Riley Crisswell, the kid that got homesick and Tyrone Cohen. Whatever the reasons for their absence you have to figure their presence might have made a substantial difference.

Still struggling to understand how, for 2 straight years, the team has played better in the first half of the season than the second half (excepting March). Maybe there is something to the fatigue thing, although my understanding is that Coach Carm's practices are less physically grueling than MB's were (especially in the latter part of the season).

Coach has no options. Wonder if frustration might send him to early retirement? Might a guy or two transfer? Food for thought.

However, what HC is doing, making every possession 1 and done, doesn't seem to make much sense at all. As has been noted many times before, Carmody's teams (whether at Princeton, Northwestern, or here) have NEVER valued offensive rebounds, sacrificing the possibility of extra scoring chances for the benefit of getting back on defense quickly. That makes some sense, especially with a team that is as slow as this one is. But to your point, the indifference to the offensive glass is plumbing new depths this season. Holy Cross is currently rebounding just 15.8% of our misses, down from 20.6% last season - only three D1 teams in the last 20 years have done so at a lower rate . . . Lowest Offensive Rebounding % (1996/97 - 2016/17)
Liberty (2016-17), 13.0% N. Iowa (2015-16),14.8% Air Force (2002-03). 15.4% The Air Force team was, of course, coached by Joe Scott, who has coached with and/or under Carmody, on and off, for almost a decade. The predilections of Scott's teams (particularly in terms of pace, three point rate, and rebounding) closely mirrored those of Carmody's over the years. While his addition to the staff was widely praised on the board, there is a downside to hiring one's doppelganger. But I digress . . . What is even more distressing than giving up all hope on the offensive glass is that we are aiding and abetting our opponents at the other end as well. Holy Cross is garnering less than 70% of opponent misses, ranking 295th in the country. The sum of this end to-end ineptitude is that HC is now the worst rebounding team in the country. www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/stat/total-rebounding-percentage

Of course this "sprint back on defense after the shot" strategy is employed with the expectation that the team will make a higher-than-average percentage of its shots. Alas, we don't do that.

That is difficult to overcome. They are talented and do show it at times. They are not, however, consistent. Folks can try to blame the PO for long scoring droughts, but when players get open shots and there were many last night, it is the player (whose shot went long, short or was an air ball) not the PO that is the bigger problem. I will try to maintain my sanity by watching games but in overall terms, all I care about now will be the 3 or 4 games in March.

Coach has no options. Wonder if frustration might send him to early retirement? Might a guy or two transfer? Food for thought. Not really. With all that has been happening, the players seem to respect their coach, even if some posts would try to make it seem otherwise. Just "food for thought." The seniors will graduate, not transfer. You might wish to see others leave, but I doubt that will happen. CBC has no immediate retirement plans, so no need for any threads yet as to who will "replace" him.

SNOW?! I hope the team beat the storm back to Worcester. Did they all arrive safely? At what time? It was already going to be a "long" ride home and I am sure the weather could have made it seem even longer. (I am posting his after blowing off our driveway and sidewalk in NJ for the second time today. We now have about 8" and they say it will be coming down for a few more hours. ) Stay warm and safe everyone!

Among the many contributions that Fr. K made to Crossports was the travel and weather reports of the team and to reassure us when the teams made it to their destinations safely. R.I.P., Fr. K, we miss you!

This program is in trouble. It seems like all of the Carmody backers' eggs are in the basket of next year's frosh, but bringing in 5 freshmen to a team with (a) no seniors and (b) the lackluster culture we are seeing right now is not a recipe for success. The great Ralph Willard, upon being asked at one point about frosh playing time, said something along the lines of, 'if you see the freshmen getting a lot of time on the court this year, it means we're in trouble'. At our level, winning very much correlates to having an experienced AND talented group of upperclassmen leading the way. Lots of minutes for underclassmen usually means rebuilding rather than contention. Honestly, if I ever hear this again, it'll be too soon. Every one of Willard's teams included one or more excellent freshman performances that helped those teams win. 1999-2000. Tim Szatko. Rookie of the Year.2000-2001. Jave Meade. 25mpg, 7ppg, 3apg. All-Rookie team. 2001-2002. Lufkin/Kinsey/Hurley. Lufkin - Rookie of the Year. Kinsey and Hurley combined for 16mpg, 4ppg, 3rpg. 2002-2003. Kevin Hamilton. 13mpg, 4ppg, 2rpg, 1apg. PL All-Tournament team.2003-2004. Simmons/Thomas. Simmons - 18mpg, 9ppg, 3rpg. All-Rookie team. Thomas - 14mpg, 5ppg, 2rpg, 2apg 2004-2005. Clifford/Doherty. Clifford - 9mpg, 3ppg, 2rpg. Doherty - Rookie of the Year.2005-2006. Cunningham/AVB. Cunningham - 16mpg, 4ppg, 3rpg. AVB - 28mpg, 6ppg, 5rpg. All-Rookie team2006-2007. Keister/Meister. Keister red-shirted. P.S. Here is Rhode Island, we are supposed to get up to 18" or, as we used to say in Syracuse, "a dusting."

WG, great post, but as far as the quote
But "getting a lot of time on the court" is a very relative term. I suppose he might have meant playing 30 minutes. I sure don't consider low to mid teen minutes as "a lot." Jave's minutes might qualify.

Every single year featured a player who made the all-rookie team or was ROY - except for Hamilton, who only made the all-tournament team, and played nearly four times as many minutes as the current freshman class combined..

No problem with that this year. It is sad that some of those very talented freshman players were slowed by injuries for a year or more.

Supposed to be over in Metro West and The Woo by 8PM. Woo says 14-18. My place should be more like the 14.
Just hope it's removable quickly so that Friday is more or less normal.
