HC @ Army in '23, not sure if posted before That's all good and well but that's 7 football seasons away. I'll believe it when I see it.

Out of curiosity did you go up to coach Dicenzo and tell him you thought his sport should be dropped and then go up to coach Gilmore and say you thought he should be fired?

HC @ Army in '23, not sure if posted before I believe 2001 is the last time we played these guys...after several encounters in earlier decades. Considering the history we have with Army and the PL connection, not having West Point on the schedule for 22 years is a major scheduling failure. Explanations please.

HCTG conspicuously absent during the "meet and greet" actually...he was at the Hart but wasn't at the Pine/coaches meeting. Sorry, but hardly anyone cares about HC baseball....a lot of people couldn't care less about the Red Sox these days. Back to Gilmore, do you seriously think he should not have been fired last year?

Last I checked it takes both schools to agree to play. Why pin this solely on HC? Have you floated this on the Army message board as well?

Gilmore was there, standing in the back of the room, in the doorway. Coach D was sitting right next to Pine.

Considering the history we have with Army and the PL connection, not having West Point on the schedule for 22 years is a major scheduling failure. Explanations please. Beginning in roughly 2004, there was a rule on the books that did not allow FBS schools to count wins against non-scholarship FCS schools towards bowl eligibility. Hence why there was about a 7 year gap in ANY PL games versus FBS schools. In fact, during my four years at HC, not one Patriot League school had such a game on the schedule. Between 2002 & 2004 I remember a handful of PL/FBS games: HC-Army, Lehigh-Buffalo, Colgate-Buffalo and Lehigh-UConn. After that string of games, the next one on the books was Colgate @ Syracuse in 2010 - this game happened IIRC because the Orange couldn't find any FBS schools with open dates and already had a scholarship FCS school on the schedule (they could only count one towards the six wins). Beginning in 2011, Fordham began playing an FBS team every year since they were first to get scholarships. Thanks to ADNP, Holy Cross was the next school to get aggressive with the FBS scheduling and Lehigh has games on the books in a few years.

Thanks to DR who got scholarships back and got BC back on the schedule. Let's give DR the credit he deserves too.

Thanks to DR who got scholarships back and got BC back on the schedule. Let's give DR the credit he deserves too. The Patriot League forced HC's hand with regard to scholarships. We are still playing catch up to Lehigh, Fordham, and Colgate who have put more $$$ to their football programs, and were spearheading the scholarship movement. Not thanking DR for scholarships. Thank you for getting BC back on the docket.

I read in the Holy Cross magazine about five years ago that DR was in favor of scholarships.
We spend less than everybody in the league on baseball, is that DR's fault, or adnp's fault or does it go higher than that? I suspect it goes higher than that.
DR hired our 3 successful major sport coaches, hofhccrw, Dicenzo and Gilmore. Thank you for all you did DR.

Gilmore, successful ? 70-76. 1 PLC in 13 years Dicenzo ? losing record overall. 1 PLC in 9 years DR also hired Kearney and Milan Brown

I read in the Holy Cross magazine about five years ago that DR was in favor of scholarships. You must have mis-read. From the Winter, 2008 edition: Booth: How do you feel, Dick? Would you like to have football scholarships? Regan: In a perfect world, sure. But, as things stand, I’m not pushing for them. I was a CFO for a good part of my career. I have a feel for the financial issues we’re seeing right now. So sure, I’d love to have football scholarships, but I don’t think it’s practical or realistic right now. We estimate it would cost us a million-two to a million-five a year. Because if you add football scholarships, you would, of course, have to balance that with an equal number of women’s athletics scholarships. That’s a lot of money given all the other pressures we have right now. For that reason, I can live with the status quo as long as our peers do.

I have little doubt that Dick Regan was all for football scholarships but he answered to Frank Vellaccio who told me that he was also for football scholarships "but where would we get the money?" If your boss tells you that you don't have the money for a pet project and you have no idea where to get the needed money, you would be pretty stupid to go on record to say that you are for something. One or both would look silly.
I just don't think Dick's forte was shaking the money tree and my distinct impression was Fr. McFarland had other priorities (about 5 years before, Fr. McFarland told a PC audience about an expanded Hart Center as if it were imminent and then Williams/Figge Halls were built and discussions of other dorms). Fr. Boroughs conversely seems to believe that athletic success will bring higher name recognition nationally for the College and that money spent on athletics is an investment rather than an expense. No doubt Dick's successor was instructed to find the money . . . . and for the most part, he has.
