Rebounding is going to be our biggest problem this year. We have no beef under the basket to push the other big men away from the basket.

It's a win. KC and PB will have good seasons and be real leaders. Freshmen showed confidence. I still think that it will be a long year, but I am trying to have a long view. As I stated in my season prediction, this team is going to get us excited for next year.
UCONN only up 2 against Colgate at the half. Game is on SNY,.

Jehyve Floyd should not be touching the ball in the backcourt when we are trying to break a press. Terrible. Coach agreed on postgame

Lots to like tonight. Definitely going to struggle with bigger teams but I’m excited to watch this team continue to get better over the next two years.

The freshmen committed 14 fouls in 87 minutes of play. Of course this was their first game against older, D-1 college players who are much, much quicker than most of the guys they played against in HS or AAU. I think freshmen typically do commit a lot of personal fouls as they adjust to the faster pace of the college game. This is only one game but an issue to be mindful of as the season unfolds

JG was 1-6 from three point land in both the Assumption exhibition and in today's opening game. How did his form look? As others have stated, he clearly is not afraid to shoot, but I need to know how often we can expect him to connect....

Offense looks a little chaotic with guys trying to go a million miles an hour. That was my initial reaction, but they pressed the ball up the court and then if there was not an immediate opening, went to their offense. Their game will be faster than we have seen in some time.

Jehyve Floyd should not be touching the ball in the backcourt when we are trying to break a press. Terrible. That one play was sloppy. It was the pass that was the cause of the turnover, far too high and along the sideline. HC seemed to handle the press pretty well all the other times.

As others have stated, he clearly is not afraid to shoot, but I need to know how often we can expect him to connect.... His form was good...not throwing up bricks. He always expects his shots to go in and seems surprised when they don't. He will do well from 3. Also there were only 2 "last second" bombs - and KC hit a 3 on one of the two. HC also lost the ball near the end of the game on a shot clock violation and BC looked like he was going to have a stroke...but he kept his cool.

Getting pushed around a bit underneath......one of my biggest concerns going into the season. The refs (not a good group, BTW) allowed the SHU Players to slam into anyone underneath for a rebound and then it was usually the HC guy who was called for a foul. On the other hand, they hit HC with a few questionable "block" calls. However, when we were not abandoning any chance at a rebound in order to get back and set up the defense, some of our guys did well underneath. The fouls were in some cases freshman fouls, but coming from intensity and trying to get the ball at all costs. This is going to be a very good group. One player we will see more from is certainly Butler. He seemed to have trouble getting an open shot and felt more comfortable passing to someone else. He will also find his spot.

Many more positives than negatives tonight. Caleb played a solid game on both ends of the court. KC was good, but needs to be more assertive. Grandy played with confidence, he made a few mistakes, but he will learn from them. He took shots when he was open and has a good looking stroke..interesting coach went with 4 juniors and CG after Grandy tossed the ball away...
Our bigs had problems defending inside. JF, Grandy, Kc, Faw all seemed very uncertain as to what to do to defend. They were ok early, but then the refs went on a run of calling HC for fouls, and from that point on, it looked like our bigs were trying to defend passively ( hands up). That doesn’t work, they have to get better position..and they were a half step out of position most of the second half. I think that will come as the season moves on..
Offensively, good ball movement most of the time, and shoot the 3 pretty good...PB penetrated and scored, JF had a couple of very good moves for scores...as did Caleb..
It’s a road win! Learn from it and move on!

Took Rob Champion til the very end of his sophomore year before he was able to hit consistency at this level.

Rebounding is going to be our biggest problem this year. We have no beef under the basket to push the other big men away from the basket. Agreed. Lopez in particular manhandled us but the freshman whose name I can't pronounce #24 was very impressive down low as well. SHU hits their foul shots and we may have been looking at a close loss or OT. Not to mention 4/20 from three point land. Granted, I didn't catch the first half but I thought we were just a little bit outplayed tonight. Love the confidence of the freshmen while PB and KC are taking on the leadership roles they needed to fill this season. I was also impressed by Jehyve Floyd - loved those baby hooks. Seems he's going to be more than simply a one-dimensional player this year and I look forward to seeing such a talented athlete make strides in his game. Sacred Heart probably a competitive team in the NEC this year - I'll take this road win. Great way to start it off! Wish this game had been a 7pm start as getting from the Bronx to Fairfield during Friday rush hour is nearly a two-hour trip. Impossible for NYC folk to get up there in time unless they were able to get out of work by 4 o'clock.

CG is going to be a leader and suspect he already is among the freshmen. He could be seen talking to some of the players after a mistake was made. He is a good complement to PB.

A few final notes: The defense did deny SHU passing lanes inside on most plays. When the allowed a pass into the lane, it was for an easy layup - three times as I recall. As to the "hands up" that some commented on, that was what BC as telling them to do...over and over. The HC frosh actually looked as poised as the 3 red shirt seniors and one RS junior on SHU. There were shirts thrown into the stands by the SHU cheerleaders. Almost all of them were caught by adults and SHU undergrads. In every case the students then handed the shirt to a youngster sitting nearby...classy. The 2 big SHU screens did show replays, but I was too caught up in the game itself to take the time to look at them. HC showed depth that I had not been expecting. No one looked like a deer in the headlights out on the court and the mix of players almost did not matter. That was also a surprise. I am looking forward to seeing this HC team again in person, next time at FDU in Teaneck, NJ the week before Thanksgiving (2:00 PM game). In rebounds, Lopez (a senior) and Matasovic (a RS senior) had 13 and 9 rebounds respectively. The SU freshman who hurt us the most was Anosike with 8 rebounds, but 5 of them were offensive rebonds...that is 2 more OF Reb than the entire HC team. Finally, Massey called this a 4 point HC win (68-64). He was only off by one point and if that last FT had missed he would have nailed he score on the head. But that is probably just a coincidence since opening game predictions mean less than nothing...or so I have read.

That was my initial reaction, but they pressed the ball up the court and then if there was not an immediate opening, went to their offense. Their game will be faster than we have seen in some time. Per Ken Pomeroy our "adjusted tempo" was 68.3, much faster than last year's 60.3, an extremely slow tempo, #349 in D-1. So that's just one game in a long season and we will wait for more such games before drawing any conclusions

Better than expected. We gave up a lot of garbage layups from not moving fast on D. That will improve. Frosh are real good. Need more width down low. Refs made the game brutal to watch with all the stupid foul calls. SH broadcast did instant replays during actual play which was also stupid and made it harder to watch. Take the win and don’t ever go back there. Beat Harvard.

Good win on the road against an experienced team. The last few minutes were not good but held on for the W, would have been really tough one to lose after being in control for most of the game. Held our own rebounding till last ten minutes, this looks like it will be a major concern going forward. The freshmen held their own and didn't look overwhelmed. Green is very good and it looks like their will be little to no adjustment period for him playing at this level. The others appear to be feeling their way along but should continue to get better. KC was great last night, it still amazes me that teams allow him to get to his left as much as he does. Benzan was solid as usual and made a few big plays down the stretch. All in all a good way to start the season.

What is very impressive is, though there were the breakdowns mentioned, two complex defenses have been executed fairly well, with 4 freshmen playing significant minutes. Add to that one of the more challenging offenses to master. A credit to the coaches and the freshmen.
