Elon is playing Furman first round (already beat them once this year). Big surprise this year- maybe we can learn : "This year has been a total surprise for Elon fans. After going 2-9 last season, the Phoenix brought in a new head coach, Curt Cignetti, to turn the team around. And he has done just that. After coaching at Indiana Univeristy of Pennsylvania, posting a record of 53-17 over the past six seasons, and serving as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama under Nick Saban during the 2009 championship season, Cignetti came to Elon with a winning mentality". Delaware was the 5th CAA team hoping to get in (and apparently almost slipped in).

I'm familiar with Elon. Joined the CAA about 4 years ago and have gotten their 'clocks cleaned' until this year. Hired the right guy in Cignetti. But the CAA is a different animal. In their case, they brought in 2 frosh qb's in January so they could participate in spring ball. Desperate for a qb, one of the frosh has been terrific from day one. They also redshirt, like the rest of the league. These policies are huge when dealing with limited (63) schollies.
Nevetheless, Cignetti has been appropriately nominated for the Eddie Robinson FCS coach of the year award.

I also noticed what a huge contribution the (non redshirt) frosh quarterback made to the team. Elon fell under the same CAA rules last year (2-9) and this year (8-3) - kudos to the new coach. Kudos for Elon for recognizing Cignetti's transferrable success at the D-II level and hiring him. Further agree turning around a team from 2-9 to 8-3 should get you nominated for Robinson Award. (IMHO they've been slightly overrated this year and I don't expect them to get very far in the playoffs.)

But HC win over UNH, and competitive games between Lehigh/Villanova and Colgate/Richmond tells me that the gap on Any Given Saturday isn't quite as big as you seem to want to make it.

PL can and does beat CAA occaisionally. Never said or implied anything different than that. Could the CAA champ (JMU, ranked 1 in the nation) beat Lehigh (the PL Champ) this year? I'd say so. Are there 7 or 8 CAA teams ranked above PL Champ Lehigh? Yes, but it doesn't mean Lehigh would definitely lose to each one.

Thanks for the clarification when I read your quote that the two leagues are "completely different levels of football' I sort of inferred something different.

Thanks for the clarification when I read your quote that the two leagues are "completely different levels of football' I sort of inferred something different. No problem. When I wrote "No question CAA and Patriot League are two completely different levels of football" it was to agree with purplehaze who correctly noted a couple of the biggest differences "But the CAA is a different animal. In their case, they brought in 2 frosh qb's in January so they could participate in spring ball. Desperate for a qb, one of the frosh has been terrific from day one. They also redshirt, like the rest of the league. These policies are huge when dealing with limited (63) schollies. " (I included his quote in my reply.) I don't think anyone disagrees that redshirting would help bring us up towards their football level. They're consistently getting 3-4 at large playoff bids annually while we consistently get 0. (At the same time it is true PL's can sometimes compete with and occasionally beat CAAs)

Stony Brook beat Lehigh 59-29, and graciously took consecutive knees starting with 2:30 left from about 15 yards out.
As a reward, SBU gets to play JMU Saturday. That's the quirk of the geography-based FCS playoffs.
. Impressive turnout by the Lehigh faithful.

If things work out perfectly for our football program, we'll be seeing HC regularly in the FCS playoffs starting in four or five years. As PL champ or at-large. Then it won't be boring at all.
I give Lehigh credit. They had a pretty bad season and knew they'd be overmatched but they gave it a shot. Gotta think Lehigh's coach would have preferred to end their sub-.500 season at the conclusion of Patriot League play.
