Very winnable game against a team that makes the Milan “We Don’t Shoot It Well” Crusaders look like the Golden State Warriors Warriors. Perhaps we should have scouted them and packed in a zone (rather than just playing the same defense that we play against everyone) to force them to chuck 3’s all games so they wouldn’t have gone up 16 against us. La Salle was also 10-27 2PT FG.

Big Improvement. Heart Breaking loss in a game they should have won. Need to work on free throw shooting and getting Charles involved in the offense. The bottom line though is five loses in a row has to end soon.

Stuck on 54 for both games! Car 54, where are you? Sad... we could have won this easily if we had made some free throws!!

Oh well. We knew someone would leave with two losses and ruin the trip. I kind of thought that it would be us... Too Bad. Kids played hard in second half. Nice to see that they made a little run..... Might be a long year !!!

Butler with just three nondescript minutes. Disappointing tournament, and playing time has declined steadily since FDU

La Salle attempted 23 of their 50 FGA from 3PT. What are you talking about? :2 big threes were hit by LaSalle ( guess they were due) after tied at 50

Very nice showing from Niego today. We desperately need someone else to emerge to get us to a point where we are 5 players deep, and hopefully he can be that guy.
Green Benzan Charles Niego Floyd
(3 juniors and 2 frosh)
Then piece together whatever we can get from the rest of the roster and see what happens, I guess.

Some thoughts for the flight back
Coaching staff has a few questions to address before the next practice and UMASS game:
. Does this group have the length and quickness to play a straight up 1-3-1 or 1-2-2 that starts as 1-3-1- or do they go to a flatter 3-2 or 2-3? Match-up ? . How do they build on second half offensive effort of attacking the basket vs jump shots? . What do we need to do to make sure CG has the ball in his hands with some more looks . Can the philosophy be tweaked so this group is allowed to offensive rebound and still handle transition defense . What is the starting lineup or does it matter? Some teams have starters who play 5-8 minutes and then sit because they don’t respond or contribute the same way off the bench . At what point is it necessary for players to understand their role on the team so there is a chemistry on the team-or is that not as important with this group? . KC had his head down most of the tournament- he hits a 3, gets to the basket and then he is smiling, not hiding and steps up defensively—-do we run something right away, down on the low post, for him to attack the basket and get to the line? . How do they keep those players who aren’t part of the rotation involved and focused (other than Stevens, Powers and Copeland most have been given a look through the first 7 games) . How to build individual and team confidence as they will have uneven performances throughout the season . More I am sure...
Better effort and execution today and if we tinker with the defensive sets a bit you will keep Faw out of foul trouble or difficult match-up situations and benefit from his offensive abilities-Niego plays both ends and needs to be on the floor more-and yes I still like PB coming off the bench after 3-5 minutes with his energy and scoring ability and I think it should allow CG more looks early but I am probably alone there—For UMASS start CG, KC, JF, CN and PB( but wouldnt object to MZ if he has a defined role of feeder with an occasional look at the 3)

minutes and who finishes count who starts is irrelevant that said, based on all games thus far, 4 of the starters continue to get the most minutes. that other spot has varied contributors today Niego played the largest amount and was on the court the last 8-10 minutes

Matt Faw committed his 3 PF in 11 minutes of play His offensive prowess is wasted, unless he can get over this, or defense changes to allow him to play next to, not in place of, JF he could play until he committed his fifth, or at least fourth. but he rarely plays with JF

Grandison's minutes today were most likely cut because of bad turnovers, not bad D

Pete Gillan made two key points over and over in both games 1-need to “get in the mud” everyone need to hit the glass. Cant win being out rebounded by 10+ 2- 1-3-1 leaves the baseline open and we give up a ton of open threes in the corners
Team needs to change defenses. The P.O. is a disaster. We don’t move. No rotations, ball too slow in arriving. Defender there as ball gets there.
Yes we have freshmen, but coaching has been pretty subject so far.

HC is #307 in FTA/FGA and #321 in FT%, so I'm guessing we must be in bottom 10 teams in FT Made Per Game

1-3-1 leaves the baseline open and we give up a ton of open threes in the corners Team needs to change defenses. The only time the 1-3-1 has worked well in Carmody's time here was during the PLT in 2016 with Eric Green running the baseline - and that's the main reason why we had the run in the PLT. Need somebody with speed, length, and defensive instinct - there was nobody last season and after six games this year, I don't see anybody on the roster who combines those attributes. Either the players are going to learn to play the match-up well enough in time, or would hope the coaches would be willing to try a more vanilla-flavored, straight-up zone that gives us more persistent presence in the paint. Biggest beneficiary of that change would be Faw, who I could see getting 20-25 minutes and averaging 8-10 ppg and 5 rpg right away,

we do not box out under the hoop, someone has to keep the other team away so that we could at least have a chance to get the rebound. This is going to be a long year unless we start hitting our shots at a better percentage. We need to recruit better athletes. Stop it, just stop it. We want shooters. So what about defense. Our shooting will take care of everything.

Great second half. The two 3s when it was tied at 50 were killers. The passing was more crisp, the defense swarmed the ball and was able to with the substitution pattern HC used. The team I saw today (including a revitalized KC, with a tape job on his injured leg once again) will be fun to watch, even if frustrating at times. Niego seems to be establishing himself. Faw better on defense and was a bit more of a presence under the boards.
We leave the hotel at 7:00am tomorrow. I want to see what payoff we get from the lessons learned in Belfast.
