Someone's post that HC ranks dead last, #351, in free throws attempted per game, piqued my interest in looking in looking into how we do in terms of rebounding. As of now, we rank 345 in total rebounding %. I checked a couple of the early Willard years. HC ranked first in the nation in '02-'03 and #11 the year before. I believe RW often said, shots don't fall every night but you can always bring 100% effort to the table and that is what defense and rebounding are mainly about.

I'm a fanatic about free throws. Getting to the line and converting is a very, very important contributor to winning. More than any other stat (at least the last time I checked) "free throws made" is the strongest indicator of which team will win. I think the correlation is something like 70%, i.e. 70% of the time the team that makes more free throws will win the game. That's higher than other stats such as "the team with fewer turnovers", "the team with more rebounds", etc. One secondary factor, that sullies the stat a bit, is that the team in the lead often gets fouled by the team that trails in the last minute is a desperation move to get the ball back. Still, we should all agree that HC is doing a woeful job of getting to the line and making free throws.

Over the long run, FTA is a stat about aggressiveness and effort - how hard are you working on the offensive side of the ball - and also how hard you are making the defense work.
Our offense does absolutely nothing to make opponents work hard.

Is it just a coincidence that the two teams who run the Princeton offense are 0-3 in league play so far?

Also 2 teams using the most freshmen.

Whether freshman or not, wasn’t this a consistent problem for Carmody and Scott coached teams?

I think there may be some correlation......but I think the lack of experience (and in AU's case, the absence of Gasperini) trumps that. Still waiting for someone to come forth with a successful team that utilized so many freshmen.

I can think of one from a vastly different conference than the PL, that almost won the National Championship. Starting lineup had 5 frosh and at least 3 of them went on to have stellar NBA careers.

I remember the Michigan team from years ago who started 5 frosh, but few saw the group as students.

On the topic of playing so many frosh, let's say we are 0-9 in league play, or close to it, after round one of PL play. What do people think of starting 4 frosh plus Floyd for the remainder of the season?

Not thrilled with that. Why would you give up on Charles and Bensan?

On a side note...what is the role of team captain on the basketball team? I can't find a list of current and past basketball captains anywhere...of course that may just be me. But, the football captains have plenty of coverage and for some reason the post seems to not mean much in hoops at HC. I went to the archives, but being named "captain" is apparently not listed as an honor for anyone in the section of "honors." If we want this team to mature and to show player leadership on and off the court, I would think that the captains should be where this starts.
PS: In the archives, captains is one spot where captains' names were always listed. There are no captains listed after Hamilton and Thompson (2015-16). Who were/are our team captains for this year and last year? A search of the media guide lists all of the captain positions our players held in high school (and the college captain positions of our coaching staff) - but, I see nothing for this year's team and players. Has the position been de-emphasized?

We had some significant controversy on this subject on this board years ago. As I recall, there was a hot debate as to whether the captain (I think it was Justin Burrell, point guard/lightning rod) had been chosen by his teammates or appointed by Coach Brown......

NAD how about Harvard last year, freshmen played over 60% of minutes and scored 66% of points on an 18-10 team.

I haven't seen anything announced, but Benzan and Charles meet the officials and opposing captains before games I don't know what the official role of a captain is. Unofficially, the captains gather the team together before legal practice begins for various workouts

Hope we don't follow Harvard's trajectory, team seems to have regressed this year with a 6-9 record to date.

They also had seniors Syani Chambers, Zena Edosomwan, and Corbin Miller. No seeing the same on our roster.

I think most on this board feel CWC is going to return next year, regardless of this year's record. That assumes he doesn't retire. If that is the case, doesn't it behove him to develop the 6 frosh as quickly as he and the staff can, especially with next year looming as a pivotal year for the staff.

Don’t overlook the possibility that some of the freshmen may actually be more productive right now than some of the upper classmen.

One other note about Harvard last year: on 2/10/17 they embarked on a 6 game winning streak, before losing the last 2 regular season games (and then losing in the first round of the new IL tourney). A similar run for our guys would be very encouraging to me. Now about improving on D.......
