We waste too much time playing catch, then we fire up a shot with less than 5 seconds left on the clock.

See? Now this'll get you in trouble with the PL/NCAA. If he used my quote, "The refs were saying to Navy 'thank you for your service'," it would convey the same message but how could anyone be upset with that?

Definitely a few calls went the Middies way late in the game. Ugly game to watch neither team could throw the ball in the ocean. Copeland seems to have nice stroke from deep need to see more of him, team desperately needs to improve three point shooting. Charles with only 5 shots tonight need to find way to get him more shots. Green seems to have lost confidence in his shot thought for sure the way he started out would be on All Rookie team but he's been trending in the wrong direction for awhile now. 16 games in and we're still searching for a consistent rotation Niego has gone from starting to not playing at all.

We are what are; not a very good team in a weak conference to boot. Road record is very discouraging.

Road record is very discouraging. 3-19 on the road in regular-season conference play since Carmody took over. Obviously, the wondrous tournament run in 2016 suggests that kind of futility isn't etched in stone.

FINAL. Navy, 61-56. Navy made fourteen free throws in the final 10 minutes of the game - Holy Cross, three. Some/much of that is because we were behind and had to stop the clock, and they played mostly zone to pack it in and dare us to beat them from 3. earlier we drew some ft when they played man D. See play-by-play. With 6:27 left in regulation, we were up a point when KC fouled Dulin. Over the course of the next 3 1/2 minutes, margin was just one or two either way, and Navy stayed in the game by making 7 of 8 FTs, while getting nothing from the floor. Holy Cross fouls weren't a function of trying to play catch up .http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/playbyplay?gameId=400992036

Thanks, but it was hard for us to draw fouls when they played mostly a 2-3 zone packed in on JF and daring us to shoot 3s.

Here is the Navy account of the game:
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men’s basketball team (12-6, 3-2 PL) scored the first seven points in the overtime period to outlast visiting Holy Cross (4-12, 1-4 PL), 61-56, on Thursday evening in Alumni Hall. It was Navy’s first overtime game of the 2017-18 season.
Navy junior forward George Kiernan scored a game-high 13 points with five rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Bryce Dulin tallied 10 points and five assists, while junior point guard Hasan Abdullah added 10 points with three assists. Senior forward Tom Lacey scored seven points with a season-high 12 rebounds and made a number of critical plays for the Mids at the end of the game.
Entering the overtime period tied at 48-48, Navy first got a stop defensively and then Kiernan scored inside and finished a three-point play after being fouled by a Crusader defender. Lacey drew his second offensive charge of the game and then Dulin scored on a drive from the left wing. Freshman guard Cam Davis then stole the ball from Holy Cross’s Jacob Grandison and followed with a lefty runner for a 7-0 Navy run to open the overtime period.
Holy Cross’s Karl Charles and Kyle Copeland knocked down 3-pointers, but Kiernan and Davis both went 2-of-2 from the free throw line as Navy eventually held on for the victory. “I’m very happy and feel very fortunate that we were able to win this game,” said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. “I thought we were okay in the first half. We shared the ball and made some shots. In the second half, we didn’t score. We just could not make a basket. It’s hard to win when that happens. In overtime we started to make some baskets, which was fun to see.” Navy opened the game with a 14-7 lead before the Crusaders fought back with a 7-0 run to draw even. After Holy Cross took a 20-19 lead late in the first half, Navy reeled off a 10-0 run on the strength of two 3-pointers by Abdullah. A late 3-pointer by Copeland stopped the run and sent Navy into halftime with a 29-23 edge. Navy came out cold in the second half as the Crusaders started the period with an 8-0 run and held Navy scoreless until Davis hit a jumper at the 13-minute mark. The teams went back-and-forth in the low scoring second half and Holy Cross led 36-35 with under seven minutes remaining.
Dulin was fouled and after making the first attempt, he missed the second, but Lacey was there to tip-in the offensive rebound to put Navy ahead 38-36. After a 3-pointer by Grandison, Lacey made both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity to put Navy ahead 42-41. He would later make two more free throws to put Navy ahead at 44-43 and then Lacey fouled out Holy Cross’s Jehyve Floyd by standing tall and drawing an offensive charge. Floyd entered the game as Holy Cross’s leading scorer and rebounder this season.
On the following possession, Dulin dished to Abdullah for a 3-pointer and a four-point Navy lead. Holy Cross’s Austin Butler scored a layup on his team’s next possession and then Holy Cross got a defensive stop. Holy Cross had the ball for an inbounds pass under its own basket, and Lacey made a steal on the pass and was fouled, making one-of-two free throws for a 3-point lead, which Navy would need as Patrick Benzan converted an and-1 play on the next trip down the court to tie the game at 48-48.
Navy couldn’t convert on its next possession and then Holy Cross had the ball with a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Abdullah stole the ball from Benzan and then Navy quickly called timeout with three seconds left. Navy had two chances for the game-winner at the end of regulation, but could not convert as the game went on to overtime.
Neither team shot the ball well on Thursday as Navy was 18-of-46 from the field (39 percent) and Holy Cross was 19-of-50 (38 percent). Navy was aided by going 19-of-25 at the free throw line (78 percent). Navy outrebounded Holy Cross, 34-29. Charles led Holy Cross with 10 points, while Butler, Copeland and Grandison each scored nine. Grandison also had nine rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders.

Here is the Navy account of the game: Navy outrebounded Holy Cross, 34-29. . . . A little mis-leading. What was more important was a fourth straight game in which our defensive rebounding percentage was respectable - in fact, last night it was excellent (78.6%), against a good rebounding team. What cost us the game, imho, was fouling instead of defending during the last 6 1/2 minutes of regulation, giving them an undue number of free throws, which (to their credit) the Middies drained. Also didn't help that we turned the ball over more than in any game this season, other than URI. Sports-ref provides advanced game-logs which may be of interest to some. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/holy-cross/2018-gamelogs-advanced.html

In summary, Navy would drive to the hoop, foul called every time. Holy Cross would drive to the hoop, clean block, no foul. And thank you for your service

Ahhh, you guys seem to like that phrase. Feel free to use it, no royalties needed, but feel free to make a donation to Holy Cross.

I'll move my comment over here where it belongs. All comments are valid but I still say this was for the most part an opportunity lost. I don't consider our defense to be the entire reason for these facts from the 2nd half: Navy scored 2 points in the first 11 minutes of the 2nd half - they shot 22 pct for the half including 1 of 9 from 3. the next time an opponent has that kind of 2nd half, can we all agree (if the game is close) we should 'win' ? (regardless of the zebras)

A general observation . . . Opponents have taken more free throws than HC in 14 of the 16 games - averaging 6 more FTAs and 5 more FTs. The "thank you for your service" comment may be justified for last night, but there's a chronic, season-long issue here that needs to be addressed.
Nobody in D1 makes fewer free throws than Holy Cross, and facing zones and getting screwed by the refs don't explain that away.

Points off TOs - Navy, 20-11. Are those strictly baskets made after a turnover or do fouls made count in that stat also Definition = "Any points (including free throws) scored on a possession gained by a turnover." The stat is kind of silly, since many of the points scored after a turnover would have been scored anyway had there been a made basket or a missed shot at the other end instead of the turnover. It includes baskets scored 27 seconds after the turnover where the team has run its normal offense and perhaps made ten passes before shooting. I think just looking at turnovers is much more meaningful. It might be more interesting to look at points scored by the opposition that were the direct result of turnovers, e.g. fast breaks (or shooting fouls) off of a steal, or quick shots where a man is open due to the turnover etc. Scoring would be somewhat subjective, but more meaningful.

Even when it is 16-15 ? True there maybe should be a distinction between live and dead ball turnovers. Live ball turnovers frequently lead to fast break advantages.

The main frustrating point I feel when watching the 'Sadres offense is that the players don't look at the hoop and get into that "triple threat" position..They often just run offense with little thought of attacking the D...I don't mind the patient offence, but please LOOK at the hoop!!
