GoPurp, a true story about Stockman and 'mascots'. Early on, Stockman wanted to cut the DOD budget. Dry analyses, lots of number tables etc..form the rationale. Stockman takes his proposed cut into Reagan. At the meeting with Reagan is Cap Weinberger, who is Secretary of Defense, but had formerly held Stockman's position as Director of OMB. Weinberger knows how the game is played.
To counter Stockman, Weinberger throws up graphic after graphic, showing the American military under Stockman's budget as nothing but a bunch of sad sack soldiers. In contrast, Weinberger's budget graphics create ranks of towering, muscular warriors, Its way over the top but very effective. The national security division of OMB never recovered from the sad sack soldier depiction, and thereafter basically accepted whatever budget came out of the Pentagon.
The power of imagery.

I always thought the crusader nickname was pretty safe. After all, HC spared Mulledy -- the sinner who is forgiven rationale -- and Georgetown never did. After his period of reflection and prayer in Nice, Mulledy returns to the U.S. and founds HC. Two years later, Milledy returns to Georgetown as President. Clearly, Mulledy's period of penance on the French Riviera counted for naught when it came to Georgetown.
I concluded that the mascot was gone after Charlottesville. Even though there were few students on campus as the semester had not started, Fr. B. organized and led a prayer vigil and then said there would be further conversations during the school year. (When collecting clues, Fr. B. also appears to have a special affinity for the Jesuits murdered by the army in El Salvador.)
IMO, it was an open question whether a de-weaponized crusader mascot might survive the review, --until Charlottesville. After, and in reaction to, Charlottesville, tech companies began cutting the oxygen to white nationalist, neo Nazi websites. Now, unless one hangs around in 4Chan, or the darker corners of Reddit, the crusader motifs and symbolism appropriated by these extremists are harder to find. But they're still out there, lots of memes of Pepe depicted as a crusader with the Templar cross. For several very good reasons, HC will never acknowledge that the mascot was done in by the symbolism that's been adopted by the neo-Nazis. If not for that, the result of the review may have been similar to Brooks' pushback of Dershowitz.
.
And when the editors of the Crusader in explaining the name change to the Spire, stated they didn't want a newspaper name that was associated with the anti-Semitic actions of crusaders, that foretold the BoT decision, and again, IMO, the unstated, underlying rationale.
____________
BTW, I know Kudlow when he worked for Stockman at OMB. I think Dean's rules preclude a further description.
