I used to want to avoid some of the big boys...memories of Penn State and Syracuse from the mid-1960s. But I now see the wisdom of this sort of opponent or two every year. It does up our game (both on the field and in recruiting) and can eventually set HC up to roll in the PL.

No we should not play them either in b-ball unless we need the $$$ Crazy. We should play as many of these as we can fit in the out of conference schedule. They are good for exposure and recruiting. Additionally, I can guarantee the players are more excited about these games than any other on the schedule (hopefully excluding the PL games necessary to get into the playoffs). I agree it makes sense to stay with historically relevant teams, but on the other hand, playing some geographically diverse teams could not hurt the national profile. Maybe not West Virginia, but teams like Northwestern or Notre Dame may make sense down the road.

Has Notre Dame ever played an FCS team?

Has Notre Dame ever played an FCS team? Don't think so. Independent need(ed) strength of schedule with conf. championship. I dont think it will happen, but down the road - who knows.

Mind boggling that some can't grasp this.

It did take me a while. Now I realize it is their team and they want such games, so I am all in.

How about Alabama?

Mind boggling that some can't grasp this. No kidding. Our theoretical goal should be to be good enough to have every OOC game be against BCS teams. Fear no one. Respect everyone.

Need to be careful about who HC plays when it comes to the big boys. HC is one of the very few schools with an all-time winning percentage against the University of Georgia. Don't want to sully that, even for really big money!
Georgia is 0-3 against HC all-time, and 0-3 against USC (the Century Boulevard school) all-time. These are the two worst W-L records for the Bulldogs against all opponents, all-time..

By the logic that players and recurits would allegedly be all fired up to play Alabama so we should schedule Alabama, I'd say yes. No brainer. Heck, Clemson - Alabama back to back would get kids doubly fired up. And by the additional logic that the harder our OOC the easier our PL competition will seem, I am all in on that Clemson-Alabama scheduling.

I’m a little surprised about West Virginia. I thought Dana Holgorsen didn’t want to play fcs schools.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I'm assuming they would love to play OSU at the horseshoe, but we'd need osu to agree. OSU, UGA, etc don't need a true bottom feeder scheduled win in the same way BC, MD, and WVU (to a lesser extent do). Give me the 18 year old who wants the challenge of playing the best (possible) schedule. Those are the kids that will help us then beat 'gate, Lehigh, etc.

At this point we'll try anything (legal) to re-build the program and perhaps the annual FBS game might help in recruiting. Combine that experiment with some fan appeal (at least on our side) and it is a potential win-win. (Towson did that this year with University of Maryland and even though it was a complete blowout (63-17), I could see the scheduling rationale for Towson.)

I love how some here want us to play Ohio St, ND and Alabama when we can't even beat Lafayette and Monmouth at home yet . Again, all for FBS opponents on our football sked...but let's be somewhat smart (something we haven't done much of athletically in the last 30 odd years) about it.

I thought the defense looked pretty good. Did some blitzing. Offense had some good moments. One receiver had a few good catches including a great one hander. Punter was good. One of the quarterbacks looked good. Don’t know the name. The others were adequate. Coach Chesney is a high energy guy who really coaches. No red faced insanity. There were about 10 kids there who I’m assuming were incoming recruits.

Back from the intra-squad game. Defense looked much better than the offense but one never knows if one is weak or the other strong. Interesting that the program showed how points were scored: Offense: TD = 6 points PAT = 1 point Field Goal = 3 points "Explosive Play"* = 2 points *= any play over 20 yards Defense:3 & out = 2 points sack = 2 points fumble & recovery = 4 points interception = 4 points defensive TD = 6 points PAT = 1 point Any TD will supersede all previous points earned on that play Final score, IIRC, was defense 36, offense 32 - but it wasn't that close IMO. Geoff Wade (#15, junior, most experienced QB) started and think he played the entire 1st "quarter." Connor Degenhardt (#10, sophomore) played almost as much, maybe more than Wade Emmett Clifford (#13, junior) played probably the least. Dean Nagle (#19, sophomore - spells his name wrong as far as I'm concerned as it is missing an extra " e" ) played probably 3rd most. All of them looked like they could throw bullets but think Connor has the strongest arm and also showed some ability to scramble but won't make us forget Pujals who was there for a pre-game recognition ceremony. As for RB, by far Matt Vecchiarelli (#33) got the most burn. He is listed at 5'10" and 188 but did not show that he is the answer to our need for a power back. Cozier did pretty well. Mountain dropped a number of passes as did a number of receivers. The defense made the O-line looked porous, many time getting to the QB untouched. To these untrained eyes, it appeared to be offensive weakness not defensive strength but I hope I am wrong. Chesney is obviously trying to make this more fun for the team as between quarters, they played various games. For example, the "big man" contest pitted a DL and an OL who would try to catch punts and if they caught one had to hold onto the ball(s) and catch the next one. My recollection, they each were able to catch and hold 3. They also had one-on-one passes into the end zone - one receiver vs. one defender. They did that perhaps 5 times and think it was a tie between offense and defense. A much better turnout than prior years as they tried to make this an "event" with the cheerleaders performing (also in pre-season form) and they had a bounce house form the kids and a cupcake selling truck as well as a BBQ selling truck. Didn't get to try either as the crowds were too big. Will try to post a few pictures. The midfield logo is gone and all of the yard marker numbers were gone and no logo or writing in the end zone. The large (and now, banned) Crusader above the scoreboard is still there for now but Lutsk said to 45 and me after the game it'll soon be gone. My suggestion: HC can make up for some lost revenue by auctioning off the sign. There appeared to be one addition or at least something I don't recall ever seeing before: A Holy Cross crest attached to the elevator shaft to the right of the visitor side president's box. Will post more if I can think of anything else. BTW, the weather was perfect football weather.

Nice to hear big crowds connected to HC football in any respect - even if only for the food trucks.
