I really, really don't want to let myself get dragged into this discussion again but . . . . I'm sorry, crucis that you saw billboards in the 60's with the [unspoken but understood] KKK using the image and Crusader name and I totally get why this would be upsetting and offensive to you (and me as well as the KKK has no love for Catholics, Jews, minorities and just about anyone who isn't a WASP). But if we are going to go down that road, losing the logo/mascot does not "solve" the problem as the College decided to retain the ostensibly offensive name.
And did/does anyone who has even a scintilla of knowledge of Holy Cross think there is any connection whatsoever with the hate group?
From my personal observations of attending open discussions and communicating with folks on the hill, while the student newspaper held out one of the reasons to rid the paper's name was because of the KKK, that was not a part of the school's decision. At least not the primary reason and probably not even a secondary one. It had to do with the association with the Crusades which non-Catholics/Christians found offensive. Read Fr. Boroughs' comments about the decision.
Changing the branding to a shield with a non-descript "HC" does not eliminate the "offensive" Crusader name. Even "Purple Knights" would have been better than a stupid shield, which my wife believes was a Nate Pine idea. At least neither of us recall seeing it before Nate arrived. Pretty sure he or his minions came up with the shield and Boroughs & Co. thought "hey, that's pretty unoffensive. Let's go with that." After all, with few exceptions, a shield is thought of primarily as defensive, not "offensive."

The current second stanza of the alma mater, I print that because of the fourth line, which, IMO, makes it imperative to secure a new, replacement bell, the sooner the better.
The college credits the tune as being O Maryland, My Maryland, which, knowingly or otherwise, ties it indirectly to Fr. Ryder, and the Secesh. The lyrics were written by Augustine Conniff, class of 1902, from Plains Township, Luzerne Co, Pennsylvania. Conniff was a manager of the football team. _____________________
Edited to add that Conniff was a Democrat, and if he came from a family of Democrats, perhaps they viewed Lincoln as a "despot", as claimed in the opening stanza of O Maryland My Maryland. Conniff did win prizes at HC for elocution.
For the challenge in playing the alma mater on a carillon of bells or chimes, below is Cornell's Evening Song on chimes.
The Evening Song was first published in 1877, and is performed directly before the Cornell Alma Mater at most Chorus and Glee Club performances. It is often also heard across campus being played on the chimes of McGraw Tower

The HC in the shield was not first seen in HC apparel when Nate Pine became the AD. I have a HC Polo shirt that I purchased in the bookstore in the late 1980’s that incorporates that design. I still have that shirt in my gear rotation, that I occasionally wear to games and alumni events. I wash it by hand to ensure that it is maintained properly.
I will discuss the branding, iconography, marketing and association concepts as well as public perception from non HC folks next time we meet. Their perception and knowledge of the institution is unfortunately different when viewed outside the iron gates of Linden Lane.

A shield w/a bursting sun in it was part of HC's general school branding when the redesign of the academic website was done before the interlocking HC within the shield became the athletics logo.

Thanks for adding the last paragraph addendum to your original post. As for your polo shirt and shield, I know you to be knowledgeable and honest and I need to clarify that the shield of the 80's was when I was residing in Syracuse and had never seen. Can we agree that the shield was not an official branding (the bookstore merchandise is not "official" as far as I am concerned as they sell all kinds of stuff and I have things bought from there they they tried to sell and never "took off" and discontinued). I am sure you have greater inside knowledge than I but the lack of transparency, for me, is as bad as the decision(s). BTW, I have lived "outside the iron gates of Linden Lane" for close to 50 years as you well know.

Pine: "Different schools, different agendas". So what is the HC agenda? To win a football game every year against GTown
