Hope we never again play a crucial PL game in week one. Absolutely unfavorable scheduling.

Nevah again! [did I spell that right, 87? ] That is correct.....haven't made that trek since 1986, won't be going this year either...Labor Day weekend fending off great white shahhhks here. I read somewhere, probably on AGS, that both Colgate and HC agreed to move this game up sometime back to allow for a bye week later in the season but I agree, not an optimal date for this longstanding rivalry and important league game.

11 of the 12 voters in the preseason PL poll who could vote for Colgate to finish first did. Will be a good wake up call for the rest of the League when we trounce them.

With 'Gate and H.C. facing UNH and BC respectively in the week following this game, calling the dogs off by midway in the 3rd qtr., under normal circumstances, would be an option for either team. If either team is up by more than two scores at this juncture, either team has the luxury of selectively pulling its starters. Head Coach Hunt watched this group of starters all of last season...he wants to keep them healthy. At this point in the game, Colgate has the luxury of unleashing the 3-headed running back monster ( 210, 205, 210 lbs ) for the rest of the game to pound the D and the clock. Last year, this 'Gate group managed a significant T.O.P. advantage ( 33:52 vs. 26:08 ) at a 4.8 yds/run clip vs HC's 2.7. Hunt sounds excited that straight A student athlete soph QB Brenemann can absorb wrinkles to the read option as quickly as the coaching staff can install them. As a frosh Bernnemann threw only 5 interceptions on the season. That could make Brenemann and the 'Gate O hard to defend: a read-option dual threat. But why showcase these new wrinkles for UNH film if they're not needed to register a W. If Hunt doesn't need to show what's under 'Gate's playbook kimono until UNH, 'Gate fandom can defer their gratification gracefully...nothing to prove. So as soon as 'Gate can achieve separation in the score, the more the HC faithful will feel like they're watching a boring PL revival of Woody Hayes' "cloud of dust."

On one hand you have school in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York that has no athletics name recognition to get alums and fans excited. On the other hand you have a school in NYC that is surrounded by HC alums and has exponentially higher athletics name recognition. A no brainer.

Our OOC is far more interesting than our PL games. I’m personally tired of every school except Fordham.

It is what is.....I too could do without the Pennsy schools and GTown (just no history, lengthy travel and Bucknell and GTown basically just "mail football in") but we need a home somewhere I suppose.
What I don't want to see is PL football expansion....I like the 5 game OOC flexibility the 7 team league provides.

At this point they (Fordham) are our top rival. And IMHO that is a good thing (given applicant overlap, similar academic reputations, Catholic faith within a Jesuit tradition, geographic proximity, NYC, etc etc. ) I imagine just a tiny contingent of HC fans (friends, alums and students) will make the trek to upstate NY. That being said, Colgate is the class of the PL this year. As their game notes point out, 10 of the 30 preseason all-PL's are from Colgate. (Fordham next with 5). They might actually be pretty good by non-PL standards. I’m looking to see Fordham and HC displacing Colgate/Lehigh within the next three years atop PL football standings. Fordham, given its location, should be able to out recruit the rest of the league and HC is making a huge investment.

Rather go to Hamilton in September than November but this should be the season finale every year. This absolutely should be our season ending rivalry finale. The three schools we've played the most by far are BC, Colgate, and Dartmouth. BC has been gone for decades. Dartmouth has been a regular, but more episodically in recent years. Colgate we play every year. Fordham is the alternative. The Jesuit connection is a factor, but it pales in comparison to our long football relationship with the (Red) Raiders. Colgate has no other natural season ending rival. Why Colgate-HC should not be that game for both schools, I've never understood, given the history and the fact that both play in the PL.

The only way we’re having a rivalry with anyone at this point is if we and the other team are both consistently good for several years in a row. If we stink and Colgate is good or vice versa, very few people who do not post here or have a child on the team will care whether we play them first or last. Same with Fordham. Let’s win and rivalries will pop up. We’re not creating Lafayette-Lehigh with anyone but we could have some fun, if temporary, rivalries if we can get good.

I just don't see "number of all-time games played against" as being a compelling enough reason to try to push Colgate as a rivalry. Do modern fans really care about this, as it relates to any school other than BC? HC vs Colgate in the days of antiquity vs HC vs Colgate now are different animals. Colgate is a long, crappy, usually cold road trip, games always poorly attended and apathetic, and there is little to do for fans in Hamilton NY after all that travel. I can't see any younger fans with families making this trip, ever, unless they have a family member on the team. Fordham is at least in NYC which is a much more desirable location to visit for most northeastern alum, plus so many similarities in the two schools and shared alum that it makes a lot of sense to me. Of course this only my opinion. Seems to me that for decades now both admins have been in pushing a friendly spirit of competition between the schools via special events and award (travel games to Ireland, Bermuda, Yankee Stadium, Ram/Crusader Cup, etc.).
