Hingham actually....but he probably wants to come off as a tough Weymouth guy Was former AD Dick Regan from Hingham? Not sure...have friends, relatives from Hingham who knew Sean and the McDonough's growing up.

Bob Chesney just received a shoutout during the LSU - Miami game. LSU’s kicker transferred from Assumption after two years. In fact, Assumption has been mentioned three or four times already during the broadcast. Got to love Sean McDonough. He was at Assumption for THREE seasons as he redshirted as a freshman to get bigger

Very nice. He gets, presumably, a graduate degree from LSU, plays in the country's toughest football conference, and regularly enjoys some fine Cajun and Creole food: all is good for Cole Tracy.

In all due respect, mm67, there are many more threads in crossports history that have gone much further off the rails than this one. Sure, if it's going to continue on, maybe a separate thread is warranted. But I think this diversion will have a short shelf life. Having said that, if just one priority recruit was watching the game last night, and is swayed by the pub.......... Happy Labor Day, all!

Fear not NAD, et. al., you can tell that this was not an mm67 post. His account must have been hacked. How do I know?
Where's the "Love HC" at the end of this post? Couldn't have been him!

I was thinking about this also. However this year the momentum was in HC’s favor at the end of the game. In years past it was HC being worn down and unable to hang on. Colgate has some early points off our mistakes to go up big but in he end they barely hung on for this win. Also we were shutting down their ground game easily, going 3 and out often. It took a fairly risky and well executed pass play for ‘gate to seal the game (assuming one agrees that this was a complete pass - I DO NOT). If this game was just 10 minutes longer . . . This was a “different” HC Gate game on many levels.

Was in the car during the second half comeback. The crowd noise was noticeably loud, very loud. Either Lutsk or Big Red made the comment that Coach Ches encouraged this kind of noise, especially when kicking off.
I know there is not a BC thread yet, but if I was calling the shots (you all should shudder), I'd call for an onside kick the first time they have to kickoff. Why not - that is a play where 1_A, 1-AA, BCS, FBS, ABC, CBS, ESPN doesn't matter....it levels the playing field for one play, and if successful - could provide some momentum that at they could get at least a little mileage out of.

Seriously folks, don't you think that the posts have gone far afield from HC-Gate thread? And, I couldn't give a rat's butt about some LSU kicker from Assumption. Maybe a separate thread about the kicker, and for those getting their underdrawers tied up in knots over an announcer's mention of Chesney. Love HC You going to be okay?

Coverage of HC athletics has been pathetic for many years but it only mirrors the lack of interest in athletics at The College of the Holy Cross in general in Central Mass.

Thought this would be one of the things that got "fixed" once we got new coach Chesney. Bringing in the St. John's high school players may help us in this area in the long run.
I wonder if we have a decent showing against BC and playing a "name" D-IAA school in Yale will help build the home crowd in couple of weeks.

Mcdonagh said Worcester a beautiful city in Massachusetts. Thinks more people are at this game than Cole Tracy has ever kicked in front off in 38 games at Assumption. Even put some clips of him kicking at Assumption Thinks Chesney will become a great coach. He may "become" a better known coach, but IMHO, he is already a great coach.

Should not be surprised of the lack of interest in HC athletics in CMass. In the 80s college de-emphasized athletics and the region de-emphasized their support.
That being said there is a buzz about Chesney and the team. But it will take a long time. People have moved on.

At the risk of de-railing this thread, hasn't the demographics of the region and Worcester in particular changed? Many, many more latinos who have been brought up playing and watching futbol not football (or basketball).
While in Newport a couple of weeks ago, I used Uber and the driver said he was from Pawtucket. While I did not ask him his ethnicity, his first name was Francois and was apparently Haitian (I know, french, not latin). Striking up a conversation, I asked him about the then "hot issue" in Pawtucket about the fate of the Sox. He told me despite living decades in Pawtucket he had never gone to a Sox game at McCoy and was more of a soccer fan and he had not a clue about the Pawsox/Woosox issue. I believe Worcester might be in the same boat.
So, if you aren't especially interested in American football or basketball, Holy Cross would be hard-pressed to get a lot of a local population to attend these athletic events. Doesn't help that pee-wee football numbers are down and in some places, nationally, high schools are dropping football because they can't get enough kids to field a team.

I agree there is a buzz about Chesney but the question is how widespread is that buzz. Right now, my guess is not much. As gks noted, people have moved on. I recall people who were HC fans for years who moved on shortly after the hoop decisions a few years before and after 1980, and started attending Umass and PC games. The College of the Holy Cross has lost 2-3 generations of Central Mass fans.

HC did absolutely nothing to attract fans for decades. Partly because RW and Duffner squads were good enough to attract fans on their own, and partly because the previous athletic regime had zero interest in doing anything to engage the local casual fans when the teams play went south. To turn the local, casual fan mindset around after years of neglect is akin to turning around an aircraft carrier in a bathtub.

I have given these statistics previously, but the great majority of college graduates now living in Worcester County did not attend Holy Cross. > Population of Worcester County: About 800,000 > Population ages 25 and older About 560,000 > Population ages 25 and older who possess a college degree: about 35 percent of this age cohort, or about 198,000. > Number of HC alumni of record. About 37,000 > If ten percent of the HC alumni of record live in Worcester County, or 3700 alumni, that is TWO percent of the total number of the residents of Worcester County who have a college degree. (I suspect the number of HC alumni living in Worcester County is probably closer to 1900 than 3700.) Why should the 195,000 residents of Worcester County who have a degree from an institution other than Holy Cross support Holy Cross athletics by going to a game(s) ? The big change in Worcester is that the blue collar manufacturing base, high school degree, Caucasian, and with little or no college affiliation, has largely disappeared. The employment base has shifted to the college educated, and many/most of those who do not have a college degree but are employed are minorities, and/or are first or second generation emigres.

Yeah ok.
If we win games we’ll have one if the better followings in FCS football. Tide began to turn in ‘09 and then we involuted. And it takes more than one isolated PLC. It takes a run, and a BCS win, and some progress in the playoffs. If you do all this and there’s still no support that’s another story.
