In an aside, some HC fans said that we looked like a much better team once #11 (Benzan) came into the game. He did not score a lot, but he did show leadership on the court and chipped in with 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists. It does help to be an experienced senior. Perhaps for today and please understand I truly love his energy but with all respect he deserves I think we will be significantly better with our guard recruits next year- We may be, but the ball will probably start with Caleb on most plays. I cannot predict what may happen next year, so I try not to do so. If the recruits are as good as some say, I hope to be thrilled by their play. Of course, they were not there today and PB was.

How about this gem of a post from a delusional Iona supporter on the Iona board: "I say this with all seriousness, I could guard the Holy Cross players 1-3. I’m 5’10 and have about 3 inches on them. Embarrassing defensive effort." If he believes that, his observations are seriously deficient. He saw 5'7" players out there that he was 3" taller than at 5'10"? Perhaps he was weak from hunger and could not get food at the refreshment booth. Green, Butler and Grandison are 5'10", 6'5" and 6'6" respectively (as I am sure HC fans are aware). No matter how good he believes himself to be, I think they would make him look like a fool on the court...but that is just my opinion.

First time at the Mulcahy/Hynes Center. Very odd place as others have mentioned. The seats being in the dark like we were at the opera was weird. The banners obstructed the view of the scoreboards of anyone in the upper half of the arena. Very large HC contingent. Parking was easy. Refs stunk. Fouls were 17-10 before Iona started fouling at the end of the game. The two Jehyve charges were laughable flops but the refs did give him a couple of close ones later once he had 4 fouls. HC played reasonably well. The outcome was never really in doubt in the second half. No Niego really thins out our bench. If Jehyve and Faw both get in foul trouble, we need another guy. Hargis or Verbeek may need to play some minutes in league play

Where was Verbeek? Did not see him on the bench

Any guesses when we might reasonably expect to see CN getting out on the court again?
I watched Copeland take a shot and wince. He rubbed his shoulder and later his back. He clearly is not near full strength.

That's what I thought, too, 92 but our ND grad fan thought otherwise: I also agree that after he came back into the game with 4 fouls, the refs made at least a couple of no-calls that were closer to being fouls than the earlier ones. At our level, we should just count our blessings whenever a game starts and we don't see 45's "friend," McCarthy.

Caleb is a legitimate 5'10". Neither he nor Pat have been through the elongator that some of our previous guards experienced. Who does he think #3 guard is that is sub 5'10"? Everyone else on the team is taller than either Caleb or Pat by a pretty wide margin.

Yawns, exaggerated eye roll, yawns (again)....enjoys the W. Cheers. The best college basketball analyst this side of Dick Vitale, ladies and gentlemen! Great stuff! Cheers! You overstate my excellence, though not by much. The truth of it is that when faced with the banal, it does not take much to "nail it." Thanks for making it so easy! Cheers.

I'll let you argue that one with 45. Did he ever tell you how McCarthy called 7 of the first 8 fouls against the Crusaders in the Michigan game? He's had some doozies in the Hart Center. My point is, we are never getting top-flight refs so you just have to play through the bad calls that will certainly be made and, hopefully, they balance out over the course of a game.

I think that the first one was a charge that the defender aided with a flop. the second one was a flop only. the youngest of the 3 refs was by far the worst, plus he was arrogant, following CBC down the bench to try to tempt him into calling a T

I agree that there were one or two "non-calls" that may have helped JF late in the game. But that first foul was a terrible call. Then there was a clear "flop." JF brushed past his defender and the guy went flying back as if he had taken a head on charge...he did not. Also, on another play, MF slapped down on the ball and took it from an Iona player. The ref who called the foul (#4 if I remember correctly) was behind the Iona player and could not see what happened. It was an "anticipatory" call. That, I am afraid, is often a sign of a weak ref...afraid of being accused of missing something.

When McCarthy started out doing many PL games , he was terrible. He has improved to fair, better than most PL refs we get regularly. He must be doing Big 10 games, so he has moved up the ladder. I believe he did some Big East games last year.

The 6 HC blocks (really 7 blocks but that was been pointed out earlier) made quite a difference on second chance points. JF had 4 of them.

Back from game.
Wow what a showing of HC alumni/fans...larger and more vocal than the Iona crowd.
So proud of this team. While not overly big with several weaknesses, they play with grit and know how to win.
I thought both Benzan and Butler played perhaps one of their best games of the year. ..no forced shots or silly turnovers.
I think CBC did a fine job of getting them ready for this game and the "home" crowd definitely spurred them on.
Grandy was awesome in the second half....so many clutch shots.
In the last couple of minutes it looked like Caleb Creen may have hurt his left hand. He played through it and seemed to recover. Hope it doesn't stiffen up and become a problem.
Former players seen in the crowd....Bill Doran, Joe Carbeliera, Chris Logan, & Torrey Thomas.
Love this team. Just hope we stay healthy and get some players back. The lack of depth is scary.

Announcers said that Carmody was pleading with the head ref to reverse the call, which they did. Noticed the first ref just as emphatically switched to HC ball like it was all his idea.

OOC Schedule: nine times the hammer, only four times the nail, and one of those to the biggest hammer in the land. Bring on league play.

Key stat Once Iona shifted to a Man D for most of the second half, we shredded it with 10-14 shooting on our 2 point shots.

Speaking of two point shots, can you believe that Caleb Green is a remarkable 44-72= .611 on twos this year? Does that tell you that our offense is setting up some pretty good back door cuts and other such shots?

Yes, plus the fact that Caleb is a terrific finisher on both his dribble drives and his foul line area pull up jumpers.
