The old eyeball test tells you that Caleb, Pat, Grandy and occasionally Austin are on the receiving end of some great passes inside. Many more than last year or any year under Carmody. CWC has to be pleased that this group of guys "gets" his offense.

Oh, let's not forget that Caleb is hitting over 90% of his free throws. A little off today hitting only 4 of 6 but he's pretty much "money" from the charity stripe.

HC is so disciplined and efficient this year, we can beat teams with more talent who don't play as cohesively.

Some stat/milestone updates
Jehyve Floyd
Jehyve Floyd now has 150 blocks for his career and should soon pass #2 Nate Lufkin who has 153. He'll need 3 a game for 20 more games to tie #1 Tim Clifford. Of JF is more concerned about winning games and championships but we can still monitor his stats to see how close he gets to Tim.
JF is now 283-441 = .642 field goal percentage for his career. Lacking 300 made field goals now, he'll replace #1 Ernie Floyd (.581 for his career) as soon as he makes 17 more field goals.
The Road to 1,000 Points
Jacob Grandison should be the first of the super sophs to reach 500 career points--maybe at Loyola--as he now has 483. Austin Butler has 456 and Caleb Green 425. So they are right on track to reach the 1,000 career point milestone. At one point I thought we might get 4 1,000 point scorers (I think I created a "morning line" for this last season) and I still see that as a strong possibility as Matt Faw has 226 points. He'll need to average maybe 7.5 PPG the rest of his career to get 1,000 and he'll need to do that for HC to succeed. I like his chances. Let's keep these guys and the whole team healthy as these milestones will deliver wins. Connor Niego has 119 points to date.
In the freshman eligibility era, here are the players with the fewest frosh-soph points to make 1,000+ in their careers
Points Thru Soph Year/Career Total=Player
328/1,246= Tim Clifford 268/1,234= Jim Nairus 238/1,132= Rick Mashburn 205/1,057= Robert Champion 204/1,103= Malcolm Miller

Key stat Once Iona shifted to a Man D for most of the second half, we shredded it with 10-14 shooting on our 2 point shots. Something to keep in mind for the games vs. Bucknell. Nathan Davis' stubborn insistence on playing only m2m may be the Bison's Achilles heel.

After hearing the announcers on the video say over and over how HC anted to slow the game and tae their time coming up the court...I can't recall the last time I saw HC move up court so quickly and get into their offense. It looks like we can play a fast game when we need to (or choose to). It was also ice to see PB and CG under the rim (among some tall bodies) simply go back outside and start over.

Watching a replay of the game...Faw's foul where a Gael took a flop (at 9:06 of the first half) was not a foul...home cooking. It shows a pattern for Iona of throwing themselves backwards with virtually no contact to draw fouls...and the refs buying it.

Post game, Dick Lutsk said this was HC's best OOC start in 10-12 years. 2005-2006 went 6-7 OOC 2006-2007 went 8-6 OOC 2007-2008 went 8-5 OOC 2008-2009 went 4-10 OOC So I am not sure what his reference years is. 2007-08 was 9-4 OOC, 10-4 if you include the February win over Northeastern. 2007-2008 Nov 1 Lost to Rhode Island College 60-61 Dec 1 Lost to Dayton 53-55 Dec 22 Lost to Siena 77-84 Dec 30 Lost to Sacred Heart 58-61 Jan 8 Lost to Maryland 48-73

Given the date, you are probably right, but they shouldn't count 'exhibitions' in the W-L tabulations. According to the 2018-19 HC Basketball Fact Book, the first game of the season was against Hofstra, and the team's OOC record prior to the start of PL play was 9-4. (They finished at 15-14 - ouch.)

And looking at the job of the HC defense: 02 E.J. Crawford G/F (Jr 6'6" 210) 16 ppg / 5 rpg / held to 11 pts and 3 rebounds - Crawford is considered their top man 10 Andrija Ristanovic F (RS Fr 6'11" 215) 4 ppg / 2 rpg / held to 3 pts and 1 rebound 01 Asaiah Still G/F (Jr 6'7" 195) 9 ppg / 4 rpg / held to 8 pts and 2 reb 05 Ben Perez G (Jr 6'4" 180) 7 ppg / 2 rpg / held to 2 pts and 0 reb
HC wanted to stop Iona's 3 pt shooting. They averaged 26 3 pt shots per game. Iona was held to only 18 3 pt shots, hitting only 5 (28%). Iona planned to stop Grandy as their #1 goal Grandison 16 mpg / 5 rpg / "held" to 25 pts and 9 reb
