To get back to the Navy game, I watched a replay of the Navy game on NESN last night and was amazed at the number of times on D we gave up the baseline. That's something my jr high coached stressed not to allow. Is it possible that is what the players are coached to do in the 1-3-1. If it isn't, why is it happening in the 21st game of the season.

...and I think Kevin Daley was a lacrosse player too- you don't see too many of that combo in college sports.
He joined the team as a senior - one of the reasons being as a consequence of the untimely death of Jimmy Gooch in the summer of '76.
James Bennett Gooch. Passed away August 24th, 1976. I had never even heard of him until about 5 minutes ago. Gosh. Can someone please share this terribly sad story (respectfully) with those curious members of a younger generation? Note: seems like some of our best years happened in the wake of tragedy (77 hoops, 86 football)...

Not a teammate, but I saw Jimmy play at Molloy in Queens. First of all he was a fine person and Crusader. He was a terrific, versatile 6’5” player who was on the prestigious NYC all City team. He was the MVP of the City Championship game upset over Power. If not for his tragic death, he would have been a key player on that senior year team of 76.

Said it since I saw RW deploying it with Torey Thomas along the baseline: 1-3-1 D is weak in the corners down below the baseline. You can't front/or prevent the man in those areas, you can only hope to trap or keep the ball high to defense it.

I doubt that giving up the baseline in the 1-3-1 is taught.

Jimmy Gooch played as a freshman, 73-74, seemed talented for sure, especially offensively. Met him, Doran and McAuley several times, really liked all 3 of them.
I think a combination of the arrival of Vicens and Potter; plus a back injury, pretty much glued him to the bench in 74-75. That I remember off the top of my head.
75-76 appeared in 2 games (had to look that up, quite frankly, don't even remember him being on the team that year, maybe he didn't dress for a lot of games), so I would think that the back problem was still around or got worse; there were enough blowouts, etc. that he should have seen some time and did not.
