Is the famous, noted Broadway director, alum Bart Scher involved with the Prior? (He may have won a Tony.) I have no doubt overtures were made. But I don't know his response. Hope HC does not fail to miss an opportunity. Ann Dowd was spotted at the PPAC on Saturday

The Luth is the 400 seat "concert hall" which features a proscenium stage (typical of theaters). ----------------------- The webcam is fixed.

Looking for Crossporters with better memories than mine.
One of my Classmates who just got my Class email about doings on campus saw a link I provided about the PPAC. He said there must be some mistake.
He referenced this part:
According to him, an anonymous donor gifted over $3 million for a theatre within PPAC to be named after the late professor, Ken Happe. Has anyone heard that this was the case? Was the donor talked out of the name? Paging Phreek who seems to know all this stuff or anyone else?
I kind of think I vaguely remembered hearing the Happe story but don't know where or just a phantom memory.

No Phantom memory......See the news release below from 07/28/2017. The 200 seat theatre was to be named after Ken Happe. news.holycross.edu/blog/2017/07/28/holy-cross-announces-building-plans-for-new-center-for-arts-and-creativity/Also see Page 1 of this thread..... The world-class facility will serve as the creative hub of campus, providing a shared home for the performance and rehearsal programs of the theatre and music departments, along with a new space for the Cantor Art Gallery and studios for dance. It will also feature a 400-seat concert hall and theatre; a 200-seat studio theatre to be named in honor of the late Kenneth “Ken” Happe ’58, a former associate professor in the classics department who also directed campus theatre productions, per a $5 million anonymous gift; practice and production spaces; a small outdoor amphitheater; flexible teaching spaces; and a media lab. To date, the College has raised $38.7 million in current and future commitments toward the building’s estimated $92 million total cost.

Thanks, 8485. I think Holy Cross owes an explanation for the name change. I would have assumed that the money was in hand before they made a public announcement of the Happe name.
OK, Vince, time for the "transparency" you've been talking about!

OK, Vince, time for the "transparency" you've been talking about! I'm not going to assume any nefarious motivation, but I agree there should be an explanation for why we have the Boroughs Theater instead of the Happe Theater. Ken Happe deserved the honor in my view.

I hope there is a logical explanation and it's forthcoming. Professor Happe was an energetic champion of the arts at HC.

Phreek is not going to hazard a guess about not naming the studio theater after Happe.
I will note that the College is apparently retaining The Pit, the studio theater space in lower O'Kane, and is used for acting classes and experimental theater. Perhaps if the Pit is retained, it will be named for Happe.
The original studio theater in the PCPA seems to have morphed into a multi-purpose space.
From The Spire,
It is possible that the Multipurpose Theater, which I believe is the space named for Fr. Boroughs, was what was originally envisioned 4-5 years ago as The Studio Theater. The Studio Theater referenced in The Spire may not have been in the original design, but was added. Whether the Studio Theater in the PCPA has seats, I know not. The Pit has about 100 seats, and a total floor area of a bit over 1,100 square feet. My understanding was that the College was closing the Fenwick theater, but retaining The Pit. The College is also retaining the Brooks Recital Hall in Fenwick.
Another possibility is that the Luths were the anonymous donor for the theater to be named after Prof. Happe, but changed and increased their gift amount to pay for the concert hall.
Yet another possibility is that the original anonymous donor did not know, at the time of his gift, that Fr. B. would be resigning as President of the college before the Prior Center opened. Once Fr. B., left, the donor decided to name the Multipurpose Theater after Fr. B.
Someone who has an in with the Office of Advancement might learn of the explanation for why Happe was dropped.

I have a strong suspicion that the Office of Advancement will not have an answer for almost anyone, even those with an in. I expect my inquiry, if given an answer, will be with the caveat that I don't share it publicly. I appreciate your alternative ideas on why the change of heart. I'm sure you learned plausible deniability there in D.C.

This image was taken from a TV station's recent tour. It appears to show the Studio Theater. Unless there are seats that are hidden out of sight, the number of seats that can be seen is not near the 200 seats in the Boroughs Theater, the multi-purpose performance space. This is also not a $5 million space.

Looks like it is down in a basement based on the lack of windows that seem everywhere in the PPAC and an area I did not wander into.
It also looks like it is taken from a stage looking out to where the audience seating would be. And, granted, the large open floor space might be for performing (dance, musical instruments, etc.) It also looks like it is very large enough to put in many temporary seats which could easily bring the seating capacity to over 200. Just a theory.

I'm sure someone else commented on this (don't feel like going through 19 pages) but this building has got to be one of the ugliest and out of place pieces of architecture I have ever seen!

Many posters will recall the great tour of the under-construction PPAC conducted by the HC professor. I think it was outstanding, giving us a great feel for what the facility would be like. We need to get him to conduct a video tour now of the completed building. Maybe I can find the old post (on this thread?) and contact thst prof.
