As i have asked, ad nauseum, over the last two decades, why don't we care what the players want? And, who among you, believe that they would prefer to trot out on the mighty Merrimack Warrior's field than the United States Air Force Academy field?

and with the respect we all have for coach Chesney, I would have supported his take on this opportunity if indeed we had it

No evidence there was such an offer. Let's revisit if there's some indication there was one.

And, who among you, believe that they would prefer to trot out on the mighty Merrimack Warrior's field than the United States Air Force Academy field? It's trade-offs like most decisions in life. If the choice was between trotting out on the USAF Academy field with a 60% chance of winning vs the Merrimack Warriors field with a 6% chance of winning, it would be a no-brainer. However the odds are opposite with about a 6% chance of winning in Colorado vs about a 60% chance of winning in North Andover. So I imagine the players could see the pluses and minuses of each choice just like older people can and the vote would reflect that.

Can't imagine going out to AFA and getting trampled is going to impress the locals and help with recruiting of course I think the same concerning a BC debacle so I guess it is a tossup. Just as soon watch one as the other. One thing all of us agree (or so it seems) is that playing two FBS teams in one year is a very bad idea. Let's hope that scheduling snafu does not materialize again. How ever will this program recover after playing both navy and Syracuse this past year? Alumni attended both games very well and then HC won the PLC. The horror!!!!

Only on Crossports can we have a multi-page argument about which of two choices we should have picked without a single person here having any idea whether there actually were two choices.

My Dad used to have an expression that I think he picked up at Holy Cross probably from some philosophy class, “how many angels can dance in the head of a pin?”

By any chance, have you ever seen a thread about basketball and the decision not to join the Big East?

By any chance, have you ever seen a thread about basketball and the decision not to join the Big East? LOL. The snippet was relative to playing football v FBS Navy and Syracuse the same year we won the PLC in football. (No doubt some folks question the wisdom of not joining the Big East in hoops....and have been doing so for many many years while others think it was a smart idea and we're better off overall ...we'll keep that on the basketball thread)

I'll take the bait and make a decision on a mythical choice that never occured in reality and that no one would ever trust me to make anyway. I would choose to go to AFA and enjoy imagining an HC upset and the headlines afterward if HC pulled off the upset, all the way to game day, and give the HC marketing/alumni relations/Development staff a good project to work on for months in advance.
I think Merrimack has more risk if HC loses and the posters who argued that playing Navy and Syracuse did not significantly increase injury risk carried the day because I don't recall any unusual rash of injuries.
However, if Merrimack turns into a good local rivalry it will be positive, too. I sense they will hold their own in FCS.

Can we agree 'WE HAVE EXHAUSTED THIS TOPIC' ? - We have a schedule for 2020 and let's focus on supporting the program with $ and attendance at the games.

Air Force's recent FCS game results
2019 AF 48 Colgate 7 2018 AF 38 Stony Brook 0 2017 AF 62 VMI 0 2016 AF 37 Abilene Christian 21 2015 AF 63 Morgan State 7 2014 AF 44 Nicholls State 16 2013 AF 38 Colgate 13 2012 AF 49 Idaho State 21 2011 AF 37 South Dakota 20, AF 63 Tennessee State 24 2010 AF 65 Northwestern State 21
Air Force already has one FCS cupcake scheduled this year, Duquesne. Why would they want to make it two by playing Holy Cross? I'm one of those people who aren't impressed by scheduling losses. I don't see the valor in signing up to brought in to be slaughtered.

I obviously get the Pine connection so it certainly seems plausible there was some conversation. With that said, it's also entirely possible the two parties never spoke given the ebbs and flows of scheduling. From a Pine perspective all AF needs is a bunch of warm bodies to serve as an season opening sacrificial lamb. Holy Cross, Duquesne, Stony Brook, UNH, Colgate etc would all serve that purpose equally well.

Lots of twists and turns on this thread. For the life of me I cannot understand why the Air Force Academy would agree to play a road game at Merrimack....

It doesn't matter where you play if you take a "chartered" C-17 to every game. Do they even need a crew? Any member of the team should be able to fly them to Hanscom

We have Merrimack in 2020 and it does make sense to cultivate a home and home with a potential Hockey East Rival with the home game in 2021. I would like to see a stronger opponent in 2021 from the CAA or the addition of an FBS team to help our bottom line, excite the players, and help gain exposure. That being said, it doesn't help to speculate what might have been! I don't think I would travel out to AFA but I do have friends in CO who would certainly make the trip!

I would have told Merrimack that we will play you as soon as we get into Hockey East. They could help us in that, if not, tell them to go pound sand. We should not be playing in a 3500 seat stadium. I'm sure we got paid a good amount for the Navy & Syracuse games to help pay some of our football program expenses.

I'm pretty sure FB at Merrimack is part of a multi-sport arrangement, of which the Warriors in hockey at the Hart was a part of. Other games in other sports will be coming.
