If I had seen even one game live to date, I might have been inspired. At this point, I would need a scorecard with all the new guys.

If I recall, Joe was a bit of a late bloomer who gained attention in the early summer of 2018 for his willingness to go toe to toe with opponents much bigger than himself. Too lazy to look it up, but I thought he had a few offers, including Towson. NERR summed him up pretty nicely in 1 paragraph:

That writeup reminded me of Keith Hochstein, as well as MV.
Possible Theme: How about the night before Christmas with a dozen or so raindeer landing on the coach's roof?

Michael Vicens tenacity on the court has been unparalleled. Looking forward to see Joe take the mantle. My all time favorite Holy Cross Basketball play that I saw live was at the ECAC New England Playoff game in 1977 against Providence College in the Hartford Civic Center. The 180 degree in your face dunk was, and still is Epic. For those coming of age after the Vicens and Potter show, you missed the all time in your face duo regarding physicality and finesse. www.telegram.com/article/20160315/sports/160319422The next great play by MV was after he completed his years at HC and was finishing his 3/2 at WPI. The BC game, Winter Homecoming 1979, that was chronicled on ESPN 30/30. There was a dispute on the court, MV was so amped with what was going on he handed his infant daughter to a friend and came on the court to rumble against the Eagles. Hope that Joe P does not go to that level, but I would certainly enjoy another 180 degree dunk to ignite the HC faithful at a crucial moment. Anyone care to comment or add additional comments about either event? Those that entered HC after 1980 missed an incredible intense player. Hope that Joe P gets some lessons from MV. If he does there will not be enough popcorn in the Hart Center for the next four years.

Kudos to the previous staff for recruiting Pridgen - I don't think anyone thought he'd step in and imme make a major contribution - and I don't recall any other D.1 schools we beat out for him. 'A diamond in the rough' Kudos to the previous staff for recruiting him, kudos for the current staff for retaining all the recruits. With the flattering experience of being recruited by one staff and then re-recruited by another, and having witnessed two players leave via the portal, the recruiting process, to some degree, might have to last a full four year cycle for our freshmen. That is why I am impressed with the partial game suspension BN executed to keep good order on the team. It appeared to work as Holy Cross came out firing on all cylinders the next game.

Michael Vicens--quickest first step to the basket that I have ever seen-absolutely explosive. I remember a game against Providence--thinking it was at the Boston Garden--where Providence's Bob Cooper (think it was him), said to be 27YO, threw down a monster dunk electrifying the crowd. MV stole a pass a few plays late, went half the length of the court and answered with an even more vicious slam helping us regain the momentum

When I first saw him at prep school I thought he physically resembled MV a little bit (as well as his game). I didn't want to mention it on the board cause I figured people here would want to throw a net over me. Actually, I thought the same thing as well when I watched him guarding a very good 6-9 guy named Robbie Stankard. Stankard isn't Phil Hubbard, But JP's fierce and fearless in-your-face D did ring a bell.

I saw MV at Mac's Diner in Worcester a few years ago and told him that when HC played Michigan in the NCAA's, John Wooden kept on pronouncing his name "Vincennes" and said that he wasn't aware of how good MV was.

Don't remember Wooden, but vividly remember Gowdy mispronouncing Vicens the same way and also referring to Charlie Browne as George Browne. My brothers & I have called him Kirk Gowdy ever since.

I believe that there's a picture of that breakaway reverse slam showing Vicen's putting the ball through the hoop and glaring at Bob Misevicius who was trailing the play. You can see the intensity in MV's eyes - both his dislike of PC and its players (Hassett, Cooper Misevicius, Campbell) and for the game itself.

This team deserves to play in front of a packed house at the Hart. I can't figure out why today's students can't close their books for 2-1/2 hrs, walk up the hill and cheer on their fellow Saders. Probably because I'm too old and grew up in the all-boys jock atmosphere of the mid 60's. Having girls in the classroom would have civilized us.....and maybe would have made us fitter husbands later in life.

Wooden coached at Indiana State which is not far from the town of Vincennes, IN He also helped to amp up the expectations for the ‘77-‘78 team when he said late in the Michigan game, Holy Cross would be one of teams to watch in the national title race the following season. Think about that one for a few seconds.

As I recall that 1979 vs BC was the ECAC game of the week with Marv Albert and Bucky Waters calling the game for NBC Yes, that is correct..Their table was right in front of my seats, this was before there was a media table across from the benches..Neither announcer new who the guy was that came out of the stands..I gave Marv a note telling him it was Michael... My favorite play with Mike was against Georgetown..Mike drove to the hoop and planted his foot into the chest of the defender! The defender was Georgetown's top player and leading score, he literally stood at half court after the play and refused to play against Michael!!! He left the game and never returned!
