Not a good comparison at all, Breslin had no chance at all to play as a freshman as he was behind Pernell, Davis and Aaron Jordan on a 24-6 team, Reilly couldn't get ôn the floor on a terrible team with no point guard.

Like Reilly, Breslin didn’t exactly have a college-ready body out of high school. Breslin didn’t do much as a sophomore either when the only other guards on the team were Jordan, Walker and Farkas. I think Breslin didn’t start until he was a senior though he played a big role as a junior.

According to sports-reference Breslin started no games as a freshman and sophomore and all games as a junior and senior. His junior year starters were Breslin, Mashburn, Walker, and Dickerson for all 29 games. Young started 20 games and martzloff started 9. I'll bet there are few seasons where only 6 different players started a game---but then I checked the next season and it says Feaster, Walker, Breslin, Young, and Mashburn started all 30 games. Does that sound right?

I’m sure that’s right. 0.6 ppg as a Frosh, 3.6 as a Soph, 9.6 as a junior, 9.8 as a senior. People forget that freshmen aren’t supposed to play big roles in low-mid major D1 basketball. Some have already given up on Ryan Wade who was a really good recruit. He’s going to be fine. The physical difference between high school and D1 is tremendous. Guys like RJ Evans and Joe Pridgen who show up with full grown man bodies tend to be more successful as Frosh. Everyone else needs to grow into it.

Does that sound right? In 91-92 Scott Martzloff got hurt early on and was out for the season. Too bad for him - I recall he had a monster game rebounding against PC, and looked to be coming into his own. For 92-93, however, it was sort of a blessing in disguise, as John Young was able to gain valuable experience taking over for Martzloff.
Frank Powell was pretty much a 6th starter for those 2 years.

Two tweets, seven players, no Copeland.
Maybe this clears things up? Hopefully it was a smooth exit, as he was not really worth the amount of speculation around this board at least.

“He was not really worth the amount of speculation” Very harsh. Who here knows anything about Copeland’s situation ?

For what it's worth, there was some opinion inside the program before his injury that he was going to be the best player on the team

The jump from high school to any level of college sports is huge. I've seen, and known, young men and women who were exceptional athletes in high school (team captain, league all-star) and not get off the bench at D3 schools. The jump to D1 is enormous. I have tons of respect for Ryan Wade for persevering through what had to be an enormously challenging season, not just playing on an undermanned and under talented team, but dealing with having to go up against bigger, stronger, and more experienced players. He struggled to contribute offensively but to my eyes always worked hard on defense. I have no doubt he'll be a solid four year contributor. How good I can't say, but my guess is that he'll develop into a very good player. Reilly is a tougher call. The fact he couldn't play this year says a lot, and yet he may still develop into a contributor but my expectations for him are much lower.

I think Reilly can play a role on a successful team going forward. He was one of the very few players we had last season that could keep his man in front of him.

Reilly's staunchest defender on this board claimed he isn't really a point guard anyway, but a shooter whose ability to fire away behind screens wasn't being exploited by Nelson. I don't seem him contributing much in that role, given that we are obviously looking for guards and wings who attack the rim through contact (as well as shoot jumpers), but who knows? Agree that his defensive effort will likely earn him some time.
Whether Humphrey can handle the point or not next year as a back-up, I'd expect Nelson to prioritize a true PG among the 2021s.

North Pole Hoops calls him a classic late bloomer. Not sure if schools showing interest such as Cal, the Bonnie's and So. Illinois have offered a schollie but if they have that is an impressive list of suitors.

Tried to go. Flight from JFK cancelled due to snowstorm. Watched at an HC dominated pub in Manhattan. Do not like watching at a crowded bar- cannot concentrate,

Yeah, that me me feel old as well! ! Was at that game as well, flew direct out of Boston and arrived safely, while others had connecting flights only to find out they were cancelled because of the snowstorm. After watching the afternoon game(s) at a bar, we walked over to the Nationwide Arena and were approached by a couple guys offering us better tickets than we had. Mid court and 10 rows up. We'll even knock off a couple of bucks! Looked at the tickets and these fools tried to sell us tickets for the afternoon games that were played! !

Hard to believe that was 500 years ago, although given the product on the court since then, it does seem like a lifetime ago

You just knew that SIU was not going to win it all, but make a couple teams look terrible before they bowed out (to Kansas, and only by 3).
Too bad one of them was us.
