I just read on the WNBA website that Lauren Manis was waived today by the Las Vegas Aces. I wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.

A person can be waived without a workout. A team can sign players to a training camp contract prior to any work outs and waive any player on the roster. Each team in the WNBA is limited to 12 players. If they go over the 12 player limit, then players have to be cut/waived. Even though Lauren got waived, there is still an outside chance she can be signed by another team to a training camp contract.

Does the team or the league owe her any compensation for this draft and dump move? If a player is waived she must have been signed to a contract, so hopefully Lauren got something out of this other than a roller coaster of emotions. She does walk away with a little extra credibility if she ends up playing in Europe.

I suspect they waived their rights to her. Don’t think she necessarily had a contract. If she did, it definitely wasn’t guaranteed.
Screw the Aces. Bill Laimbeer’s still a talentless punk. Might start going to WNBA games just to root against them.

If you go to WNBA.com, under News, select Transactions, it states Lauren Manis signed a Rookie Contract with the Las Vegas Aces on April 27th. Details of these contracts are NOT made known. I have been a season ticket holder for the Connecticut Sun ever since they have been at Mohegan Sun. Every time Bill Laimbeer's team comes to Mohegan Sun, he is boo'ed by the crowd when he comes on the floor. Coach Laimbeer's teams are known for their rough and tough defense. In addition, every team he has coached has turned out to be a winner.

If anybody needs another reason to be upset about this . . . Manis was waived to make room for a former BC player coming out of retirement.

Is Carolyn Swords related to the HC Swords family ?

When the All-Star teams were announced in 1986, Bird asked a reporter if Laimbeer had been named. Told that he hadn't, Bird said, "Good. Now I won't have to worry about him getting on the bus and saying, 'Hi, Larry,' and me having to say, 'F@&% you, Bill.'"
Those were the days.

Has this all happened before Lauren left home? I hope she was at least somewhat prepared for it

Is Carolyn Swords related to the HC Swords family ? Carolyn is the daughter of my friend and classmate the late Brian Swords and a first cousin to Megan Swords.

...Carolyn went to Lincoln-Sudbury as did her brother, a 7-0 lad who played for Bowdoin (and, trust me, was playing at the correct level).
I believe those kids lost BOTH parents, how terrible.

Yes, Brian said his wife's sister lived next door or nearby and did a marvelous job helping him as a widower and must have continued after Brian died suddenly.

If anybody needs another reason to be upset about this . . . Manis was waived to make room for a former BC player coming out of retirement. Carolyn Swords played for the Las Vegas Aces last season, and was a backup to 6' 8" Liz Cambage. Carolyn was an unsigned player at the beginning of this year. She decided not to resign, but, rather, to retire and work in the Aces' front office. I have no idea why she decided to come out of her very short retirement. I have seen her play, and I am not very impressed. Her major asset is her height (6' 6"), but she is very slow and does not score many points. I could care less if Carolyn Swords is a BC alumnae. We all have to accept this is how professional sports operates, as it is a very unstable career. Maybe, the best thing for Lauren Manis to do is to get a real job like the rest of us.

That last comment is low. Perhaps the "best thing" for Lauren might be for you to stop commenting on her situation. After all, from your comment you do not believe that playing a professional sport is a "real job." Lauren is an outstanding talent and person. There is no need for her to "settle" for a job like the ones the "rest of us" hold.

There is no need for her to "settle" for a job like the ones the "rest of us" hold. I'm sorry if you took my comment as a low blow. Let's face it, professional sports is probably the most unstable career out there. Being drafted by a professional sports team doesn't guarantee you a spot on the team. All it does is give you an opportunity to try out for the team. In Lauren Manis's case, it was already made known that her chances of making the team were slim to none. In my case, I always viewed job stability as a key criteria for selecting an employer. I am retired now, and I only had one employer in my 32 year career.

some people would view an opportunity to play a game you love, in Europe, get paid, while you are young, as a pretty good one.

Lauren will embark on a pro career in Europe - that has always been her plan and the Aces (non) opportunity was just a distraction for a month or so

I can only think that getting drafted adds to her credentials. I wish her all the best in her future career - whatever (and wherever) that may be.

The quick release at first blush is a slap in the face, but the draft selection is etched in stone for all time and will be an objective measure of her worth when European pro teams are trying to decide between many former US college players who each played in different leagues and in different systems, especially if the usual amount of travel and tryouts are limited by Covid-19.

some people would view an opportunity to play a game you love, in Europe, get paid, while you are young, as a pretty good one. There were two recent members of WBB, Tricia Byrne was one of them and the older of the two sisters from Needham, MA was the other one I believe, who hooked onto a neat program that was some kind of combination of playing/coaching/teaching/mentoring and also earning a graduate degree in Northern Ireland, iirc. I thought it was especially neat because the two players weren't stars but they both got this great post-HC opportunity as a direct result of their college basketball career. Lauren has the opportunity to play at the top level of European ball and to be more on the radar of WNBA scouts because of her draft selection.

I believe both Ganser sisters did it as well as Amy Hasenauer in Ireland. I think Byrne is still playing in Ireland in the same semi-pro league that Power - Cassidy played in.
Lauren will do fine no matter what she decides. With the uncertainty in the EU right now, I wouldn't at all be surprised if she forgoes a pro career. I doubt she is too upset with being waived, I'm sure her agent told her right from the get go it would be unlikely to make the Aces roster.
