I know we’re all about the gestures, but do those sorts of ‘masks’ actually do anything worthwhile at all in a HC basketball game? As long as we’re donning needless apparel, we may as well go to gloves too. Kids could still play with gloved hands. Not the Mickey Mouse or foam finger-sized, I’m talking surgical style. A truly grand gesture.

This BU thing is nothing more than a look at how smart we are policy.

If you are not going to wear your mask over your nose, don’t bother .Don’t recall seeing any Terrier who was not “chin strapping.”

It’s cosmetic theater. And it’s quite hysterical.

Both teams had their masks on their chins today. I have zero patience with the “anti-masking don’t impinge on my freedoms” crowd, but having a mask requirement that is totally ignored is just wrong.

Women’s Ice Hockey team in games against UNH and UVM this past week, all teams in competition on the ice, keep their masks above their noses. The way it should be. I find it annoying to see people with chin diapers instead of wearing their masks properly. Oh well! Maybe one day, those that wear chin diapers will get the message regarding usage.

The game (and masks) got mention on several major networks (more than once on NBC). In each case, it was mentioned that HC won today's game.

The HC/Vermont Women’s Hockey game this past weekend, both teams wore masks on the ice during the game competition. In the pictures below are the games against UVM and UNH this past week. The basketball teams have been practicing while wearing a mask for the last two months. Wearing a mask at this point should not affect performance. The teams are use to it. If the Women can compete in Hockey, surely the Men can play basketball wearing masks. Sheesh! Not sure why people are getting their pants in a bunch. You guys aren’t on the floor at the Hart today, or at Case on Tuesday. Now you know why it has been so difficult to achieve universal mask compliance to stop the virus.

Watched the game. It was weird for about a minute to see everyone on the floor in masks, but after about a minute, I totally forgot about it. I do agree that it's silly to have the rule if you're not going to enforce it and you're not going to make the players keep the masks over their noses and mouths.

The most important thing to remember about this mask thing is that there is no enforcement mechanism. The refs have nothing to do with this. If BU really thinks this is important ( spoiler—they don’t) their only solution is to walk off the court.

If the edict does come from the Mayor of Boston's office, which someone mentioned; then Northeastern isn't adhering to it. Saw a couple of game clips from the weekend; no one w/masks on.

Boston Globe www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/05/sports/with-both-teams-wearing-masks-holy-cross-men-edge-boston-university-mens-basketball/excerpts This game received more national media play than any Holy Cross game in decades. For example, a featured sports story in the Big Rapids Pioneer. (I had to Google to find out where Big Rapids is, -- in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.) ______________________________ I am not going to quibble with BU's rules about masks, if BU believes wearing masks reduces the likelihood that a BU sports team has to pause / end its season. BU did not close its campus in the fall semester. From BU's COVID dashboard www.bu.edu/healthway/community-dashboard/On January 4, 2021, BU tested 647 students (Charles River campus), two percent (13) of the students tested positive. Since July, 560 BU students have tested positive (includes the medical campus.) At Holy Cross, 37 students have tested positive since August 23rd, when the college's testing program began. BU, given its enrollment, is doing better than HC.

" the gear frequently slipped under the noses and mouths of players because of the sweating and jostling that comes with playing basketball." I might buy that if they didn't show the BU players simply pulling the masks down. At least their chins were protected. It is not the end of the world. If this is not a big issue for the players, then I don't care much about it.

It did get them some national publicity, and that may have been the real point. Now was the publicity positive...or just a joke? We'll see.

What is your non-partisan view of the new-look Crusaders? Always good to get an objective opinion. First impression is that you're much improved. Gates is undersized, but that doesn't matter as much in the PL; there have been a bunch of smaller fives that have been very effective in our league. Looks like the defense is much more active, and you have some length on the wings in Martindale and Montgomery that could be effective. I suspect teams will pack it in as the season goes on and make you prove you can make threes consistently, so we'll see how that goes. But this year, I think pre-season predictions and the likes are completely meaningless. There's just no way to predict which team will adjust best and quickest to playing without non-conference games (Army/Navy aside). More importantly, there's no way to predict who's going to stay the most Covid-free. That's probably the team that's going to win the thing this year. I do think y'all will win more than 3 games this year. Things are looking up!

LOL. Quickly is defined as when you come out of the game I don't care about the mandate one way or the other. I find it silly to very publicly put a rule in place and then blatantly ignore it

The World Health Organization states that people SHOULD NOT wear masks while exercising. "Sweat can make the mask become wet more quickly which makes it difficult to breathe and promotes the growth of micro-organisms. The important and preventive measure during exercise is to maintain physical distance of at least one meter from others."
Anthony Fauci himself does exercise with a mask ON unless he is 40+ feet away from others.
Given that it's tough to maintain 1M+ distance on a basketball court, safe to say the WHO rec wasn't meant to apply to competitive basketball.
Regardless of the decision by BU to enforce mask-wearing during a basketball game, it does appear to all be about virtue signaling given the way they were worn during the game. Mask wearing (if done properly and with an effective mask) does reduce your oxygen intake during exercise. At very least, athletes will fatigue faster than they would otherwise.
