Nice DH win today over Maine in our home opener - record now 4-4 - no earned runs allowed all day Looking for 2nd starter after our star Kelly Nelson and today a frosh Megan Yurchick came through after having troubles in her previous appearances - can't compete unless there are at least 2 top pitchers in D.1 Big home series vs. Bucknell this weekend

A quick glance at the other PL teams and you get the sense that this could be a conference tournament year for 'Sader Softball. BU looks tough, but most of the others have looked beatable. But you're right, we can't count on Ms. Nelson to pitch 4 games against each PL opponent with success. Let's hope Yurchick continues to prove herself.

BU is probably the best softball team in New England.

That is correct, imo - they have already swept BC this season and last weekend took both games at Lehigh (a perennial contender) 16-0 and 1-0. They should have an easy time going through the league and might make some noise in the ncaa's

It's almost criminal that a school the size of BU has dropped baseball as a varsity sport. Hats off to the Terrier Softball program but where are the protests for gender equity?

Well, they just added Men's Lacrosse a few years ago....I think another reason why baseball is looked down on is the fact it is usually a one sport field. I think Northeastern and maybe LIU-Brooklyn (back when they were a school) were the only two teams that had multipurpose fields.

Good point about single use, which is countered by all the un or under utilized baseball diamonds in America that are growing weeds in the base paths.

How is that different from ice rinks?

How is that different from ice rinks? If there are weeds sticking through the ice you are probably playing hockey on a pond.🤔

How is that different from ice rinks? Ice Rinks tend to be rented out more to local leagues (I covered a youth tournament in Groton, MA that was hosting some games at Tsongas Center) and there are two teams on most college campuses using it.

Baseball diamonds in this area are rented out to groups (similar there). Still just one sport.

Baseball diamonds in this area are rented out to groups (similar there). Still just one sport. Not to the extent of hockey rinks being year round usage getting 250+ an hour. Baseball field which is grass if you are lucky can be used March 15th-October 15th. Even a turf field is able to be used year round but how many people are renting a baseball field in December?? Here is the Sunday, Feb. 17th 2020 schedule for example at Scheinder Arena at Providence 6AM- Lasalle Hockey-Boys 8AM- Providence Hockey Club 11AM- Providence College Men 1PM-Providence College Women 3:30PM-Johnston vs North Providence 5:30PM-Providence Hockey Club 7:30PM-Providence College Figure Skating Club 8:30PM- Providence College Intramurals You can see the schedule www.rectimes.app/schneiderarena/Is a Baseball field being rented out like that?

No, a baseball field is being used in spring, summer and fall. True, figure skating does use the rink, but living history events do use baseball fields.
Getting back to the quote that started this p[oint..."another reason why baseball is looked down on is the fact it is usually a one sport field." I think you show that an ice rink is essentially for one sport. So my original aquestioin comes up again...if both ice rinks and baseball fields are for one sport...what is the difference? Why is being used by one sport someone of which to be ashamed?

I don't see many baseball fields being used from 6am-12am everyday.

Did the beautiful new multi ice sheet facility built in downtown Worcester by the owner of the Worcester Railers ECHL franchise take a bite out of the revenue stream for Hart Center rink rentals? I can remember attending basketball games at the Hart (before the Railers) and looking in on the ice rink to see if there was any activity and often it would be crickets. It didn't appear to be scheduled as tightly as the Schneider Arena in Providence. I also never noticed figure skaters launching a triple salchow or double axel jump. Does HC have a figure skating club?

I think that is possibly a reason....but the times I have been through the Hart to get to the back fields or at a hoops game, it is usually crickets in the hockey rink if HC isn't playing/practicing.

Ice hockey is ice hockey and that is one sport. I understand hour point, but to say baseball i worth less because it is only one sport played on that field seems a bit unconvincing. And I don;lt believe HC mades money on ice hockey but perhaps they do. In any case, is profit the way too judge a sport? Then why does HC Have most of the teams we field? The original quote does say a "one sport field" and gthat is true of a num her of sportsnot say so IMHO it is not much of an argjument.

No, but the decisions schools make are how much use are they going to get out of a field complex when building it. A grass field has high upkeep for a one sport field and several schools throughout the northern part of the country have to rent a field from Wisconsin-Milwaukee (only d-1 program in that state) to Wagner playing in New Jersey. It is not true of other sports though when looking at college sports. A football field can be used for soccer, lacrosse, and if it has a track around it, track and field. Field Hockey at the D-1 level is the only one that is like baseball for a single team

Anyone have an idea where BU baseball played its games? Braves Field ceased to exist after 1962. Can't find anything that mentions this. Certainly more of a factor in their decision to drop the sport than most of the other schools that did.

Certainly more of a factor in their decision to drop the sport than most of the other schools that did. I couldn't even find where BU club baseball plays. The varsity probably played at that location. BU football/baseball great Harry Agganis must have rolled in his grave when BU dropped the sport. And his #1 cheerleader Eddie Andleman must have squawked, too.

Varsity played at Nickerson. Club plays at Moakley in Southie. BU baseball didn’t play at Nickerson post 1960 or so when old Braves field was largely demolished. Bounced around at local diamonds in Boston. I remember HC/BU game at Fenway 1992 or so.

Ladies split with Bucknell today, losing 2-1 and winning 2-0 behind a 3 hitter from Kelly Nelson.

They were always quoting Bob Uecker "Must be in the front row-w-w." They were able to sit wherever they wanted.
